Pedagogic competence, derived from Greek roots "pædos" (boys) and "agogos" (guide), refers to the expertise in guiding children towards a certain life purpose. Langeveld (2000) differentiates "pedagogic" (education science, reflective thought on guiding children) from "pedagogy" (practical education activities). Pedagogic competence involves understanding human nature, child development, and the educational process, though many aspects remain unknown. Overton's competence-performance model suggests that competence's impact on performance is moderated by variables like cognitive style and memory. In developmental psychology, competence is further differentiated into three components, highlighting its complexity.

A competency is the ability to apply related knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform tasks effectively in a work setting. Spencer and Spencer (2007) identify five competency characteristics: motives, traits, self-concept, knowledge, and skills. Mulyasa (2004) describes competence as a blend of knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes. According to UU No. 14 Year 2005, teacher competence includes knowledge, skills, and behaviors for professional duties. Zamroni (2001) and Suparlan (2006) emphasize that teacher competence is essential for effective teaching, requiring specific education and training to ensure professional performance. Competence is vital for successful teaching and professional development.
