Please create a plan you could implement in your classroom or school to embed international-mindedness. You can choose whatever tool you like to make this plan (text, audio, video, etc.). Consider the following questions too when creating your plan: 1. Who (if anyone) will I need to help with this plan? - 2. Is this a short-term or long-term strategy? - 3. How will I know whether it has been successful? Don't forget to post the plan with your name.

Objective:

To foster international-mindedness, open-mindedness, and empathy in students through hands-on, interactive cultural exchange projects that connect them with peers from different countries and cultures.

Plan:

Step 1: Choose a Theme for Cultural Exchange Projects

Who: As the teacher, I will pick Global Foods as the theme, which I think it's age-appropriate and relevant to the students’ learning objectives.

Task: Food allows my students to connect with children from another country or cultural background in a meaningful way. This could be aligned with holidays, seasons, or ongoing units in my curriculum.

Step 2: Partner with Local Organization for Exchange

Who: Reach out to local restaurants: San Francisco(or bay area) has different type of restaurants such as Asian food, Mexican food, which could be facilitated as food provider.

Task: Establish partnerships with restaurants from another countries.

Step 3: Organize and Plan Activities

Who: Collaborate with my partner teacher school’s administration, and parents for support with materials or technology.

Task: Develop a schedule for food exchanges .Activities include:

Onsite Cooking or Sharing Recipes: Students share simple recipes from their cultures and prepare them with family at home, then share the experience. The restaurant could also support providing kitchen utensil, setup and demo on best-known food from their countries.

Exchange of Letters or Videos: Students write letters, send photos, or create video messages to share their daily meals/dinners

Step 4: Showcase and Reflect

Who: My students, administration, and parents.

Task: At the end of the project, organize a virtual or in-person event where students can share what they’ve learned. This might include:

Hosting a Food Exchange Fair where students display their food

A virtual call with my partner class, allowing students to discuss what they learned and celebrate their new international friendships.

Who Will I Need to Help with This Plan?

Partner Teacher: Essential for coordinating the exchange.

Parents: For supporting at-home activities, like preparing food recipes or assisting with letter-writing.

Local Restaurant : San Francisco has rich type of restaurants that could support such activity

Is This a Short-Term or Long-Term Strategy?

This can work as long-term strategy as it could extend through the year, with ongoing exchanges around different cultural topics or events.

How Will I Know Whether It Has Been Successful?

Student Reflections: Encourage students to reflect through drawings, stories, or discussions on what they learned and how their views on other cultures have expanded.

Parent and Community Feedback: Ask parents for feedback on how the project impacted their children—whether they noticed increased curiosity or empathy.

Engagement and Participation: Measure the level of engagement during activities—do students show enthusiasm, curiosity, and respect when learning about the partner culture?

Cultural Artifacts and Projects: Assess the quality and thoughtfulness of the students' work (e.g., art, letters, and presentations) to determine how deeply they engaged with the cultural exchange.

By measuring success through student engagement, reflections, and feedback from both parents and the local culture partner, we'll know if the cultural exchange project has achieved its goal of fostering international-mindedness and open-mindedness.
