Joseph Smith founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints (the Mormons) which attracted many common folk and made it one of the fastest growing religions of this time. They believed that the Native Americans were from a “lost tribe of Israel” and must be protected from brutality of the Americans. Smith and his leaders moved around to try and spread their beliefs but were often met with ridicule, persecution and violence because of their protection of Native Americans. Nonetheless they continued moving westward in search of the “land of promise”.

(Westward Mormon Trail)

Born in Sharon, Vermont the Second Great Awakening changed his thinking on religion. While praying in the woods Smith received visions instructing him to create the Church of Christ. After these visions he created the Book of Mormon and published it in 1830, which sparked his religion when he was only 25. In 1831 he took his followers west to create a religious utopia. They first tried in Kirkland, Ohio. Smith sent out missionary's, published posters, and started to build their religious temple. After some disagreements in Kirkland they Mormans left and went to Missouri. They were not liked and mobs assisted the mormans. Kicked out by the non-Mormon Missourians, and they fled to Nauvoo, Illinois. While there his community grew and he became a political figure as well as a religious leader. While mayor he destroyed a local newspaper that said Smith abused his power and criticized the practice of taking multiple wives. This led to riots and Smith was jailed. While in jail he was killed by a mob at the age of 38. Even though he died his religion lived on and is still prominent today.

While many small new religions popped up during the 1800s, Mormonism was one of the few that is still around today. It achieved its goal in becoming a lasting religion in the world with members all around the globe. It fell short in its achievements in that its original leader lived a shortened life, and that some of their original views (such as multiple wives) have been changed.
