I can teach students by adding layers to lessons, so they can practice and acquire the skills overtime. My students will know that challenges and mistakes are apart of learning.
How would you describe your families economic status? -middle class, upper class, working class, or low income? What did that mean in terms of quality of life?

Growing up I always thought I was well off. I knew we weren't rich, but I felt I had more than my close cousins or the friends I hung around with. Unlike my peers, I did not qualify for free lunch, but I got reduced price lunch. I remember feeling left out when everyone got their lunch for free but I had to always scramble for 2 quarters. As a kid, I didn't always have 50 cents with me everyday. Even though my family on paper made more money, it didn't always feel that way.
My mom has always been cautious about what our family could spend money on. We would buy generic brands and shop at department stores. We had a small house, always had food on the table, and made ends meet. I would say we were apart of the middle class.
It wasn't until high school when I started making more friends that I noticed we didn't have as much money as other's. Some of these friends lived in nice, big, 2 story houses. They wore all the named brand clothes and went on fancy trips every school break.
I always and still am very thankful for what I have. I grew up with just enough and learned the value of a dollar. We had what we needed to live a happy life.

Were you the first in your family to attend college? If not, who did? -your parents? grandparents? or great-grandparents?

I am the first in my immediate family to attend college. My parents, grandparents, and siblings have never attended college. Overall in my whole family, I come in second to my oldest cousin who was the first to attend college. She was the first to move away to a university, study abroad in Spain, and start a career as a nurse. She was definitely my inspiration and I knew I wanted to also pursue my career in teaching through college.
Since my parents never attended collage nor my 2 older siblings, they never gave me the push I felt I needed. My senior year in high school I had no idea what I was doing. Many of my classmates were filling out college applications for universities and I felt so out of the loop. My parents just figured I would graduate high school and get a job somewhere as my brothers did. I wanted something more for myself.
One day I saw an advertisement at school to apply to my local community college. I signed myself up for the placement test and started the process all by myself. I do feel that if I had more support from home, I could have been more knowledgeable when it came to applying to colleges.
Reflecting back, I wonder why my school counselors didn't give me more guidance with this process. It feels great working towards my degree. My parents definitely are proud of me and see what I am capable of.

When it comes to family traditions, I immediately think of the holidays. Starting with Thanksgiving, we always spend it with my moms twin sisters side of the family. We set up one long table where we all sit around. Before eating, we take turns around the table saying what we are each thankful for. It is the only time of the year we all get to be together and enjoy a meal-aunts, cousins, and all!
Christmas is another major holiday we celebrate. Every year we gather again at my aunts house. We first enjoy Christmas morning with some yummy homemade breakfast. Hot chocolate is a must! Then we sit in a circle and take turns opening our gifts to each other. We like to take our time and appreciate the spirit of giving.
Being Mexican-American, I grew up with many different foods. The main meals I remember are enchiladas, tamales, mashed potatoes, and meat loaf. I feel I lived a well-rounded experience when it came to food, but Mexican food definitely shined through.
Something I will always remember is my Quinceanera. When I turned 15 years old, it was part of our culture to have a big celebration. I wore a poufy dress, stood in front of the church, and danced the night away. It was an event very important to my mom. It was a special day to represent my coming of age.

In the "Draw-A-Scientists" lesson students are able to identify stereotypes and how harmful gender norms can be. When they are asked to draw a scientist, most students drew males. This lesson shows inclusion to their ethnic groups as students are given the opportunity to create their own character of who they can relate to.
