Philosophers call this The Mind-Body Problem. The issue is, whether all our behaviors, our personality, our attitudes, and beliefs are the result of brain and nervous system activity, or are there other parallel factors variously called the mind, soul, deities, that also control who we are. Watch this TED video of Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a scientist who spent her career studying the brain and nervous system (a Neuroscientist), who had a stroke. A stroke is an "insult" to the brain that can be caused by ischemia - lack of oxygen to brain tissue caused by blockage of blood vessels, or by bleeds that happen when a blood vessel bursts depositing blood onto the brain tissue. As a neuroscientist, she documented the result of the stroke and shares that with us in the video. The results of this insult to her brain are clearly behavioral. 1. I want you to consider Dr. Bolte's experiences and what they say about the relationship of the brain to who we are. Write about that in your post on the forum. 2. Think about people in your life who have experienced any sort of brain damage. Do not name names if they are friends or family. Describe what happened and the effects of their behavior. Was there recovery and if there was, how long did it take? If you don't have such a person in your own life, find a famous personality who has had brain damage and describe the same things about them - you should be able to find examples on the internet. Describe this on the forum. 3. Lastly, in terms of your own post, describe the connections you believe these examples make for the Mind-Body problem. 4. Respond to posts from 2 other students.
