I decided a week or so ago that I was going to do a major change...switch to the five point grading scale that so many of my other colleagues in the Social Science department have done. I wanted to do this because 1. I was intrigued with the notion of the grading scale, and more importantly 2. I saw value in the system as far as accountability and a more focused learning environment for my students and myself. With this new reflective grading scale, there are no 0's, or at least that grade will not be accepted in my classroom. After reading Chapter 1 in regards to grading the the psychological effects it has on our students, I thought "Why not try this new way of grading and see if it works? If not, at least I can say I tried and gave it my all." So this Spring semester, I have challenged myself to this new way of grading and also in a way, a new teacher mentality.
