Volcanoes are a mountain but are different from other mountains. Volcanoes are formed when magma from within the Earth's upper mantle works its way to the surface. At the surface, it erupts to form lava flows and ash deposits. Over time as the volcano continues to erupt, it will get bigger and bigger.

Composite volcanoes, sometimes known as strato volcanoes, are steep sided cones formed from layers of ash and lava flows. Shield volcanoes are low with gently sloping sides and are formed from layers of lava. Eruptions are typically non-explosive. Acid lava is much thicker than lava which flows from shield volcanoes. Dome volcanoes have much steeper sides than shield volcanoes.
