Together, these characters form a complex of relationships that reflect themes of power, redemption, love and freedom.

1-Prospero, he's the protagonist and the exiled duke of Milan. He has magical powers, and his relationship with his daughter Miranda and the management of his powers are key elements.

2-Miranda, daughter of Prospero, represents purity and innocence. Her discovery of the world and her relationship with Ferdinando highlights the themes of love and youth.

3-Ferdinando, the son of the king of Naples, he represents youth and love and his story with Miranda highlights the theme of rebirth and hope.

4-Alonso, he's the king of Naples and father of Ferdinando, at the beginning of the play he's caught up in the storm created by Prospero while he's traveling with his court. His guilt emerge when he believes his son has died during the storm.

5-Ariel, he's an airy spirit controlled by Prospero, and symbolizes the nature of magic and serves as a tool for Prospero's powers. He often asks Prospero to grant him his freedom, and this desire of freedom adds a layer of compassion to his figure.

6-Caliban, he's a wild and deformed being, son of the witch Sycorax. Caliban represents the wild and primordial nature, often used by Prospero, his relationship with Prospero reflects colonial and power tension. Prospero made Caliban his servant or more accurately, his slave.

7-Antonio & Sebastiano, brothers of the king of Naples, they represents deception and injustice. Their conspiracy reflects the dark plots that permeate the work.

8-Gonzalo, he's a noble advisor to Alonso, he's characterized by a benevolent and wise personality. He's the only member of the court of Naples who helps Prospero and Miranda during the exile.

the Tempest (1610-1611)
It is the story of the exiled Duke of Milan, Prospero, who plots to bring his daughter Miranda back to her legitimate place.
It begins with a storm and the shipwreck of the ship containing Alfonso, king of Naples, his son Ferdinand, Antonio, who has usurped the throne  to his brother Prospero, and the members of their court. Through magic and with the help of his servant Ariel, a spirit of the air, Prospero manages to reveal Antonio's low nature, redeem the king and make his daughter fall in love and marry the prince of Naples, Ferdinand.

The Tempest is one of Shakespeare's plays set on an un-named Mediterranean island.
Prospero's home is near shore, the island is inhabited by spirits, lead by Ariel:who have magical powers, Prospero has developed his use of magic on the island, there are no other humans on the island except Prospero,Miranda,Caliban,and the shipwrecked nobles and crew.The island was once ruled by the witch Sycorax,who was also the mother of Caliban;Caliban believes he should inherit the island, Prospero freed Ariel and the spirits of the island now do as he commands.
The island provides a convenient container for the action of the play, a confined space where Prospero can easily observe and influence the actions of his enemies.
Despite the importance of the play's island setting, the precise location of the island remains a mystery.The unknown location of the tempest has long been a source of debate among Shakespeare scholars.

The Tempest belongs to the last period of Shakespeare's work and it is characterised by serenity in human relationships.

The most interesting themes are:
• Forgiveness: all ends in peace and reconciliation, with music intensifying the atmosphere of enchantment.
• The 'element of magic and its representation as 'theatrical illusion.
two types of magic; black magic obtained through a pact with the devil and the magic of prosperous fruit of study and knowledge used to go good.

• Prospero is a European who has taken charge of a remote island where he has organised a life for himself, by getting the local inhabitants to work for him.
He maintains his power by a combination of force and promises of future freedom. So Prospero becomes a symbol for European colonial power.
•Throughout the play Shakespeare portrays love as a feeling that unites people, but highlights how some people take advantage of it, as in the case of Prospero and his daughter.
