Sometimes, you have to isolate yourself from the world in order to protect yourself. In Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne writes, "We’re so fortunate here, away from the turmoil. We wouldn’t have to give a moment’s thought to all this suffering if it weren’t for the fact that we’re so worried about those we hold dear, whom we can no longer help. I feel wicked sleeping in a warm bed, while somewhere out there my dearest friends are dropping from exhaustion or being knocked to the ground" (11/19/1942.5). Anne feels isolated and cut off from her family and the other members of the Secret Annex throughout The Diary of Anne Frank, even while the group is crammed together in a shared isolation from the world. The divide between the "inner world" of the Secret Annex and the "outer world" of Holland is mirrored in the divide between Anne’s "inner world" and the "outer world" of the Secret Annex. Anne recognizes in an instant how different this "inside" world is from the world "outside." In hiding, she is isolated from the pain and suffering of others, which makes her feel both guilty and grateful.

You have to hold on to the things you love in order to get through the hard times. Anne Frank has many things she loves. She loves reading, writing, nature, movies, and her family and friends. She’s also obsessed with romantic love, romantic relationships, and has vivid romantic fantasies. Anne is in love with life and with living. Yet, because Anne has gone into hiding in the Secret Annex to try to stay alive in Holland, during World War II, she lives a life of fear, frustration, and isolation. In The Diary of Anne Frank, Anne describes painful, ugly, and at times beautiful ways her love moves and changes under these conditions. "In the meantime, things are getting more and more wonderful here. I think, Kitty, that true love may be developing in the Annex. All those jokes about marrying Peter if we stayed here long enough weren’t so silly after all. Not that I’m thinking of marrying him, mind you. I don’t even know what he’ll be like when he grows up. Or if we’ll even love each other enough to get married" (3/22/1944.2). As usual, Anne is a blend of practicality and high emotion when it comes to love. She enjoys the idea of true love but knows that people change. She seems to view love as existing in stages, with only a very high stage being worthy of marriage.
