         <title>Long-Term Memory</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Long-term memory is the goal for learners. It has an unlimited amount of space for information to be stored. Once the concepts that are being taught leave the short-term memory, they are either forgotten immediately or transferred to the long-term memory. If the information makes it to the long-term memory, that indicates that it was important to the person and more than likely, the person had some type of connection to the information. </p><p>Our long-term memory is made up of two categories: explicit and implicit. The explicit memory's main function is to collect information, consciously and the implicit memory's function is to complete a task without having to think about it, like how to brush your teeth or how to put your clothes on when you get dressed. </p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

         <title>Short-Term Memory</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>As information is being retained in the brain, it is stored in the early stage of memory, also known as the short-term memory. Once it leaves the short-term memory, the information is either lost or transfers to the long-term memory. </p><p>In the learning environment, the short-term memory allows for the brain to store the concepts being taught in that moment. Forgetting concepts and informaiton that has been taught by the teacher one time is most likely stored in the short-term memory then forgotten about. </p><p>Think about when you teach a 3rd grader about nouns.. you explicity go into detail about the types of nouns. The next day they are doing their morning work and there is a question about a noun. They proceed to ask, "what is a noun?" That is explanation of how quickly information can be lost. The students must be able to personally connect with the information before they are able to transfer it from the short-term to long-term memory. </p><p><br></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>All stimuli that enters the brain is detected by the sensory receptors that our body has. Our five senses (taste, touch, smell, sight, and hear) allow for information to enter our brain. Although our five senses are used to accept information into the brain, sight, hearing, and touch are the three main senses that filters information throughout our lifetime. These three senses are the main senses that contribute to learning. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Retention consists of retaining information in the brain. Forgetting things, whether it be in a classroom setting or just something someone told you. Naturally, the things you remember are things that you have a connection to or things you find to be more interesting that others. </p><p>As teachers, our goal is for a student to store the concepts that we teach them in their long-term memory, so they are able to refer back to the information when we ask them questions about it. However, it isn't always that easy for the students. A child that doesn't suffer from trauma is going to have a better chance of retaining information versus a child who has suffered from some type of trauma. Trauma leaves a lasting impact on someone's brain. </p><p>While we cannot change the trauma that a child has faced in their lifetime, we can utilize strategies to help them transfer information from their short-term memory to their long-term memory. Some of the strategies that have been supported by research are activating background knowledge, using retrieval practice, contextualizing learning, and using interleaved practice. </p><p><br></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Mindfulness meditation is a strategy that has proved to decrease stress levels, anxiety, and depression. Meditation allows your brain to focus on things happening in the present and teaches your brain to let your feelings go, versus reacting on them. It is a strategy that can be used with adults and children. Using this strategy with children has proven to improve their overall cognitive brain function. </p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Physical exercise has been linked to reduced stress. Not only does physical exercise help children, it also helps adults release stress. Examples of physical exercise include recess or PE, also known as physical education. At our school, students must receive 20 minutes of unstructured play. However, at PE, they receive structured instruction- but they are still outside and interacting in physical exercise. </p>]]></description>
