1. “had no destination worth mentioning”: away from people, start of a new journey, private.
2. “amateur artist in a moment of drunken frenzy”: sees it as an expressive form of art, inspiration for a surreal painting, lack of monotonous work.
3. “walls were propped up in places with logs”: impressed by practicality, all natural things, no artificial material.
4. “ungainly fowl chased succulent grasshoppers”: funny, out of the world, something new they haven’t seen, a story they could use to show off to their friends.
5. “matronly old 🤬“: always wanted a dog, free dog to play with, animal care (felt morally good), love of puppies.
6. “ a battered sign”: used again and again, feels like home (not overly modernized), vintage and feels rustic, a place for adventure.
7. “nursing her chickens on the tired sleeper’s chest“: amusing for them, experience of baby chick (fond of birds), idea for painting (softness,  roundness and color of the chicks).
8. “everyone had forgotten where and when it originated”: mysterious person, curiosity, new mission to find out more about him (thinks of exploring the hotel to fond clues).
9. “red, humorous face“: pleasant, welcoming, fresh face (different from annoyed art teachers), person to laugh with.

1 - Location: dustry track - cowboy setting for kids
2 - Description: broken glassware, jam tins - kids see it like buried treasure

5 - Price: lowest current rates - we were able to afford it and could spend extra money on other things

Aspects we enjoyed during our stay:-
 
1) Odd angles and mismatched windows give it an abstract appeal 
2) dirty, shattered windows - vintage appeal, aesthetically pleasing.
3)It's placement above the hen house appealed to the children of the guest as she had somewhere to entertain them while she was busy.
4)Mr. Doyle was extremely pleasant, and delightful around the children.
5) the hosts were overall very pleasant and welcoming, we felt right at home.
6) the location was a little barren. but it was rather cozy.
Very good  get away from the big city.
7) the usually bored children had a delightful break from the tedious routine in the big city.
they had a blast with the puppies and the friendly  cockatoo
  1. farmer. It was a fun introduction to wildlife and animals like horses.
  2. 8)The mother found the pricing very convenient as she has a tight budget. The price suits her budget and the facilities are perfectly suited for her and her children.
9) Mr. Doyle and Mrs. Doyle's clothing and overall behaviour was strange and prime entertainment for the kids.
10)Humorous fashion choices-''pants up to his arm pits'', and ''manufactured'' pants. The children found them strange and entertaining. They commented on how they would've never seen anyone in the city who looked as thy did''

  • The animals you might find at the Shamrock, in paragraph 1
    • Ungainly fowl- shows the awkwardness of the chicken, difficult path to run on, creates an amusing image of a clumsy chicken, also word fowl rhymes with ‘foul’ showing its unpleasantness.
    • Succulent grasshoppers- succulent is juicy, filled creating a squeamish effect as it is used to describe an unappetizing insect (oxymoron) , many bugs (lack of cleanliness)
    • Moody...Rubbed her ribs- used to describe the goat, shows lack of food and indication of starvation, could also be scratching so she might have ticks/pests in her hair, rubbed could also be her trying to suppress appetite (this could also contribute to her expressing agitation). Moody also creates an image of an angry person (personification)
    • Spare proportions- oddly shaped, creates an image of a slightly distorted body just like the rest of the place, spare shows lack of certain things in the body making it look unpleasant, proportions along with it creates an image of an almost mutated dog (hostility, disturbance)
        2. Michael Doyle,in paragraph 3:
    • Irish extraction: irony, extraction shows his long line of lineage but collides with the idea that he was a very amusing, comical man. Creates a tone of the person making fun of the Doyle, creates an amusing tone.
    • Auburn stubble: Scottish people are soft, Auburn color is sunny and indicates a jubilant, high spirited and comical person. A dark beard shows sophistication, Auburn shows liveliness, not pretentious.
    • Manufactured: shows they were down to earth, not pretentious, humble, lack of pride
    • Yank them up into his armpits: shows a very comical person, like cartoon farmer, funny and lively

    Overview sentence : general effect of a disgusting and unpleasant place. 
    1) “ungainly fowl” - shows the clumsy and awkward movement of the hens. Moreover the specific use of fowl could indicate their unpleasant smell. 

    2) “succulent grasshoppers” - succulent brings to mind very tasty and juicy looking food item however the writer has used it to describe grasshoppers which are hideous and this makes readers feel revolted and sickened by the thought of it. Gruesome they were rather massive and this was because they fed on remaining litter and rubbish everywhere. Indicates to readers how polluted the place was (unhygienic) (place where pests grew). 

    3) “distempered goats” - personification, shows illtreatmeant as the goat wasn’t taken care of. It was as though it complained and was grumpy. Could be frightening as it might attack at any time. Violent & angry.

    4) “yelping brood” - annoying and irritating noise, repeated cries causing the writer to become exasperated.

    Succulent brings feeling of disgust as it shows the grasshoppers were juicy. Gives a squeamish feeling.
    3)moody distempered goat
    Moody shows the unhappiness of the animals. They were unpredictable and having mood swings, which also contributes to the chaos of the hotel. Distempered shows the animals are unhappy and disturbed, which further shows their neglect
    4)matronly old 🤬 wallowed
    Wallowed  in dirt contributes to the chaos of the hotel, also brings feeling of disgust as the animals were filthy. Matronly shows how worn out the dog was, tired and exhausted from looking after children
    5) yelping brood
    Yelping shows noise, which gives a contributes to chaos and gives an atmosphere of annoyance.

    Continues the ides of irritation. Yelping is an annoying noise. Something which is unwanted. Brood means that they were in large numbers which only intensified the annoying sounds.

    the word mop suggests that his hair was out of place and was very messy. Grizzled shows that it was a grey colour. Doesn't care about how he looks.
