Japans culture and ideals are centered around respect, privacy, and respect for the family hierarchy. Even talking to strangers there is a high level of respect required/expected. From a young age Japanese children are taught to highly respect the family hierarchy and complete strangers.

If you were approached by a stranger on the streets it would not just be a simple, "hey." The conversatio would be more intricate/respectful.

Japanese culture is intricate and very complex and elegant. To the point where putting chopsticks straight up in your food brings bad luck. This cultural ideal comes from funeral traditions. Where a bowl of rice is left with two chopsticks stuck vertically in it.

If you were to do this expect to be lightly scolded and maybe a slap on the wrist. However the people in Japan will understand that you are foreign and might not understand their total culture. You should expect to not be treated differently because you are a foreigner but you should be ready to learn.

The staff at hotels, restaurants, etc.. will often deeply bow to you. However this is more likely to happen at higher-end businesses it is still common to bow.

In most restaurants the price is usually paid for at the front register instead of paying with your waiter. The idea comes from well you already paid for good food and service so why pay more? Just remind yourself a price is a price.
