Hi everyone!

Before the class for Lecture 3 (Thursday 9 September), each of you should post the pre-class activity up on here. We will form into small groups to discuss several of these examples.

You can post the URL, a screenshot or image, link in videos, etc. Write a short description in the text too.

Here is the activity:
Take a look at the website or social media account for a tourism operator, destination, or related industry, and find an example that you think is communicating the future.

Bring a screenshot or link to the example (advertisement, video, photo, website, social media post, etc.). Think about the following questions – we will discuss these in class.

- What kind of ‘future’ concern is it trying to articulate?

- What kind of tourism values does it communicate? (e.g. economic, sustainable, cultural)

- Do you think it is effective? How does it make you feel about the future?

See you in class. - Kaya

American Airlines communicated the future of contactless travel through their online newsroom. This kind of innovation communicates the value of public safety, especially in a post-pandemic world. Innovations that put public health at the forefront can are regarded as sustainable.

I do think these technological advancements are effective, as they decrease the amount of touching, hopefully resulting in less cases of COVID-19. I think marketing efforts around contactless travel will be effective, as society is more eager than ever to embrace public health safety measures. This makes me optimistic about the future of travel. Hopefully, if another event like COVID-19 happens, the travel industry won't be hit as hard.
-Jordan

Portugal’s national tourism agency, VisitPortugal has created this marketing campaign. The campaign speaks to the world directly and calls for the promotion of more responsible tourism, once it returns. Instead of a campaign that directly competes with other European countries for a higher tourist market share, VisitPortugal’s approach is to call for the collective responsibility of the world and its destinations, to protect what has been given to them by nature.

It is trying to communicate with travellers to promote sustainable tourism value. I think it is effective campaign, which can impact the behaviours of tourists. However, I think that it will come down to the determination and actions of tourists that will create a stronger and more sustainable tourism industry. I feel that it is trying to convey a strong message that we have to reset and relearn to travel again in a more sustainable manner for better future.

-Sushan

Nepal Tourism Board

I like this promoting chart that is published by Nepal Tourism Board is to support and build Nepal by visiting Nepal. This pamphlet is related to the pandemic situation which we are experiencing right now. The figure clearly illustrates that Nepal is safe to travel because out of 75 districts, only 11 districts are affected which are the urban areas and rest of the districts that are naturally rich are safe to travel. Similarly, only 1 out of 8 UNESCO World Heritage site is closed right now, that communicates that the door of Nepal is open for anybody who loves to travel and most of the trekking routes are also out of danger. I think this is the best example of the tourism communication that Nepal Tourism Board want to sent to their travellers by indicating "We are safe to visit".
In my view, this ad holds an economic value because it basically focus on the tourist destination that are popular for international and national tourist. The covid pandemic hits the nation, the economy of the Nepal has declined therefore Nepal Tourism Board want to uplift the economy of Nepal by announcing Nepal as a safest country to visit even in the pandemic.
I think it is not effective to publish such advertisement during the pandemic because Nepal is the developing country and the health and education sector of Nepal is in a poor condition. If they announce Nepal as a safest country to visit, the flow of international people will grow and there will be a chance of spreading the Covid virus and if it happens then it will create a dangerous situation. Therefore, I think it will be better to shut down the boarders and flow of tourist until its actually safe to visit.

In my opinion, the future concern this image is trying to articlate is the fishing industry in Thailand and specifically the town of Krabi. Thailand is mostly surrounded by the sea and i suppose that the locals use fishing as a livelihood. This site is valuable to this community as they put in place measures to protect aquatic life on the beach to create awareness to tourist. This statue located at the entrance of the beach speaks a lot about the city. the beach and the city is a main activity for the locals in Thailand. Standing form this site and watch the sun set and rise, its an image of hope and happiness and inspiration for an exciting view.
