Analysis of important characters:

1. David: (our various views/ analysis)

   • He is someone who abides by the rules, listens to advice and doesn’t act out; keeping his image as an obedient child in his family. He did not bother to question anything before he met Sophie as in his eyes (aka being told/ preached to by others around him), mutants are not good; they are evil and scary, God will not forgive them for not being born the way He wants them to be born. However, after meeting Sophie, he starts questioning the system, his trust in the Definition is faltering slowly. He is also someone who is faithful in his words (he does not betray Sophie and her family’s trust for him to keep their heavy secret).

   • David is perceived as someone nice, for he aided Sophie when her foot got stuck, as well as was able to handle secrets that Sophie’s Mother trusted him with (as Sophie is found to be a “deviation” for she did not fit into the “Definition of Man”). He has proven to be trustworthy albeit his young age, showing how his character is much more thoughtful than an average kid who might not keep the secret to themselves.

2. Sophie:

   • Someone who is afraid of being found out as her parents are just as anxious (they wish to keep her safe), she is brave through her actions (eg. Crawling on the floor for quite a distance although her foot is sprained due to David being unable to carry her; forcing/ pulling her foot out on her own as she didn’t want to expose that she is abnormal), she trusts easily (personal opinion as what if David snitches to others? She would never know.)

   • She is honest in her words as she has proven that she is unable to format a lie so to hide her “mutation” from others who come across her (whom is David). She is also seen to be insecure about her “mutation” for she tries to hide it (due to the fact that she does not fit into the “Definition of Man” and she will get hunted down for should anyone in Waknuk find out about her 6 toes.)

3. Mary:

   • Although she does not appear in the other chapters, she is seen as someone who is a safe space in the madness of David’s own town and family for he goes to her for advice. She is also someone who just like David abides by the rules as she warns David to never mention his dream to anyone other than her for they might out him as a potential “deviant” (as others did not have such pictures in their head sleeping or walking).

4. Sophie’s mother (Mrs Wender):

   • Out of desperation, she trusts David with the secret that she was meant to keep with her life due to David finding out about Sophie having 6 toes. This shows that she is someone who is fearful and have a lot of contained anxiety due to the severity of happenings should the secret be let out of the safety of her own home.

   • Sophie’s mother is also someone who protective as one would with her own child. In this world, if Sophie was found to be a “deviation”, she would have lost Sophie long ago and she would not have her daughter around anymore, whom brings their family joy. Scared of losing Sophie, she decided to protect Sophie from the wrath of the world through telling her that her secret is grave to be let out.

• shows the behaviour of “it is AND has to be”, using the idea of a higher power to justify his own morals (Father is being strict about all crops and David’s ideas, and he uses this to justify his beliefs and his morals in doing things = exploiting the use of authority/ supernatural being (aka ‘God’) ).

Analysis of important characters:

1. David (our various views/ analysis):

   • In this chapter, he is being naive and not so aware of his surroundings due to his wants. As seen in his conversation with Sophie, he stubbornly insists on how Old People were able to fly and that they were wonderful. His awareness dulled due to time spent with Sophie, where because she was a “deviation”, he could say things like wishing to have another hand or so for efficient working for she herself is a “deviation”. This bites him back as he is immediately caught red-handed by his father and soon pays the consequences for it.

2. Sophie:

   • Although not mentioned much in this chapter, Sophie is seen to be a person that listens and trust her parents as her trust is not yet broken by them (unlike David). This proves that Sophie is much trusting of her family, although their circumstances.

3. Joseph Strorm:

   • He is still someone with deep morals that roots into his being. This also proven by how he felt enraged and gathered the family (including the servants and maids) to get on their knees to pray, for he does not want anyone to say such a thing and he wishes to ‘cleanse’ the ‘bad’ out of the family.

4. John and Emily Wender:

   • Both arent mentioned much, but through the various text there is, it seems that both of them are still wary people, but still somewhat trusting.

• This tells us how Sophie’s parents have always been well prepared and thought through about what to do when the day comes that Sophie’s secret is discovered.

“I couldn’t help it, Sophie,” I sobbed, “I couldn’t help it.”

• This tells us how much David tried to keep Sophie’s secret and to not reveal her identity, but in the end failed to do so as his father was of bigger authority and power of him. David was unable to do anything but to resolve to admitting the person with the deviation in order to stop the punishment he was receiving.

Analysis of important characters:

1. David (our various views/ analysis):

   • In this chapter David is seen to be more aware of his surroundings and have developed some sense of awareness in order to protect his friend, Sophie, for he does not wish to lose him.

   • He has also developed from abiding to the rules to breaking them just to keep his friend for he has started to lose trust in the system or beliefs that Waknuk has based themselves off of. This is seen in how he dares to tackle someone older than him to give Sophie time to run away and escape so that she does not get caught and potentially harmed by Waknuk residents.

   • He also breaks his image as an obedient child (in the first character) as he lies to keep Sophie’s identity safe and also breaks down at the realisation that he might have been the downfall to Sophie and her family.

2. Sophie:

   • In this chapter, Sophie is seemly more laxed, even becoming more close to David. She is more trusting of David as compared to the first chapter, seen in her taking off her shoes to play in the river with David.

   • She is someone who learns through experience and possibly assumes that David is represents all human beings. This is seen in how it took her some time to register that there was another human around (Alan Ervin) and that she should have quickly hidden it or have the instinct to prevent such things from happening, however she may have been too used to David's nonchalance to the point of ignoring her safety for abit of playtime with friends she used to not have.

3. John and Martie Wender (Sophie's parents):

   • They are someone still very cautious about their surroundings and is always prepared to be on the run should the day come that Sophie's secret was found out. This is seen in how both of them were ready to make sure David did not spill Sophie's secret by going to extreme measures, even having all their essential items on hand and packed to evacuate their own home.

   • They are anxious and terrified of consequences, straying away from the common area of Waknuk just to have peace to themselves and prevent potential trouble that might occur should they live with the common folk. As mentioned in the book, they have always thought about the consequences of Sophie's secret being leaked and fearing the day their somewhat peaceful lives ruined just for a seemingly small but crucial secret.

   • Previous point also brings up that they are well-prepared for situations and are willing to adapt to anything as long as survival is guaranteed in some way or another. This is also seen in how prepared they are in thinking of which method leaves the least tracks, going as far as not using horses as a form of transport for there will be obvious tracks that they would not be able to cover in time should someone tries to track them down.

4. Joseph Strorm (David's Father):

   • He is someone who is strict and will not tolerate disrespect or to the breaking of rules that he has set. This is seen in how when David came home a day after the chaos unfolded, Father is furious and wants to confront David to get him to spill out what he is obviously hiding. He goes as far as wanting to beat his child to get the truth out of David, showing that he values trust and honest (tying to his values and moral) more than the feelings and emotions of his own child.

   • He is also someone that is authoritative, using the power to justify his own morals and behavior. He seems to be using his authority as a comparison of superiority, refusing to be talked back to and hates being proved wrong (always wanting to be right for he is the SUPERIOR in MOST situations).

5. Inspector:

   • He is not mentioned as much, but as seen in how he interacts with David, it can be seen that he is someone who is more patient and treats his position to be the same as ordinary folks in Waknuk, not having the same superiority ideology as Joseph Strorm did.

6. Alan (son of John Ervin, the blacksmith):

   • Although not mentioned much, it is obvious that he is more of a child that is seemingly more perfect than what David is. This is because he resonates fully with the rules of the world, which is that anything not according to the 'Definition of Man' it is wrong and therefore should be brought up to keep Waknuk safe. He is also much more stronger than David, showing a comparison within their households, the bonds they have with their own family, as well as their ideas.

   • Compared to David, he is much like what David is in the first chapter, someone who follows the rules, but follows in with thought and not mindless unlike what David did. This thus shows that Alan does not really take things for granted as compared to David for Alan's family does not uphold the same amount of fame or power as compared to David's family (due to David's family's past and history in previous chapters).

1. Unexpected meeting with Alan while Sophie's secret is exposed due to playing barefooted in the river:

   • This was the realisation that shattered Sophie's thinking of that everyone was just like David, as well as the late realisation that she has just exposed her own secret, dooming her entire family.

   • This is also where David is seen to be a rule breaker, fighting with to let Sophie to have more time to escape or to hide the proof that Sophie is a deviation.

   • This changes how the audience view David, as well as showing the developed and blossoming relationship within David and Sophie, showing how they mutually care for each other, as seen in David's willingness to protect Sophie and prevent the horrible consequences that potentially happens should John exposes Sophie's secret to Waknuk.

     
     

2. Sophie's family having to run away from their home to seek refuge else where to prevent consequences to Sophie and themselves (John and Martie Wender):

   • This shows how deviations are treated, how different they are from humans as seen in the people in Waknuk's perspective.

   • This also adds on to how differently those with deviations have to live as compared to those who are not deviations according to the 'Definition of Man'.

   • This also shows that David is the odd one out for not thinking the same way as Waknuk, going as far as to say Sophie just had a minor abnormality, not understanding why it will make her a deviation and someone who deserved to be killed or hunted.

   • This also shows the system being flawed, as seen in how the fourth chapter showcases examples of deviations in animals but however is not hunted down or killed for the government or the higher authorities approve of it. However, the same concept is not applied to humans, as they are seen as creatures to be killed, not viewed even humanely or treated as a human as compared to how others would treat an animal that does not follow traditional physical stated in the 'Definition of Man'.

   
   

3. David's confrontation with authoritative figures:

   • This shows the different between Joseph Strorm and the inspector, although both hold power and have authority positions, they act very differently.

   • Joseph Strorm is seen to have the mindset that he is always right due to no one always defying him and thinking that he reigns superior and is very righteous amongst all of the people that he has met.

   • However, the same cannot be said for the inspector, for he is more patient and willing to reason with David when he notices that David is not telling the full truth. Although holding a high position, he does not see himself as an all knowing person and recognizes that he is a normal resident of Waknuk, just like everyone else in town.

   • This also shows the difference in their upbringings and showing how they individual deal with situations, ie. someone not answering or avoiding a question.

1. David (our various views/ analysis):

   • He is someone who feels remorseful for his actions, feeling as if he has failed many people around him, seen in how he feels as if he has doomed Sophie and her family and even breaks down in tears when the news of Sophie and her family was caught and found.

   • He is also someone who wishes to seek absolute truth, in which constantly thinking of wanting to know more about deviants and how they might be treated when found out. He questions Uncle Axel about the lands outside of Waknuk and even thinks about asking the Inspector about deviants as he may have more knowledge than that of a normal civilian of Waknuk.

2. Sophie (David’s close friend):

   • Although she is not mentioned much, it can be said that she may be feeling terrified as she has to run away from her own home which was once a source of comfort, as well as entering someplace that is more unknown or filled with dangerous/ unknown threats.

   • Sophie is trusted by David, which David says that Sophie is his best friend and defends her when others call her a monster or deviation. Sophie and David has a special bond that is despised by others as they think she is not one of them (A normal human being). It is safe to say that the Inspector doesn’t trust Sophie as he tells David that his loyalty could be misplaced loyalty.

   • although not mentioned much, he was mentioned to have already taken action about David’s incident regarding Sophie running away. It shows how he makes sure everything is in his control and that things are in order, while also following the laws and immediately reporting and settling things even if it was his own child who committed the fault.

• tells us how the people in the Fringes do not believe in God, and how the people there don’t live according to God’s laws and beliefs compared to the people in Waknuk, and live freely and however they want.

“…nobody really knows what is the true image”

• shows that no matter how religious one is, not a single soul is certain of what the true image is, and what it is supposed to look like. Even if one thinks that there’re interpretation on the true image is right, they cannot prove it as there is no proof available.

1. Society:

   • Very ironic; contradicting with rules for own morals, own gratification. —> Although David, Rosalind and the others who can talk via telepathy are considered deviants, as normal folks obviously are unable do have that same skills as them, are still accepted into the same society who strictly upholds itself to eradicate all deviants and to keep their town very clean/ clear of any mutants, offences and deviants.

   • This is hence ironic as it shows how little they think about other factors as they only want to follow their morals, paying attention to only an outer shell and nothing else.

   • Isolating; spread false narrative to ‘stay safe’ —> This is evident by how badlands or the fringes are portrayed to be a place where it is filled with monstrous creatures and dangerous terrains that no man will ever come out alive. However, as seen in previous chapters, this is seen to be not the case as deviants were just like the average man, except with another limb or so.

   • This shows how desperate Waknukians are, spinning negative narrative of the world outside its lands just to keep their morals high and to have unwavering faith for their own religion/ faith.

   • Selfish —> This is seen in how Joseph only thinks for the sake of his own morals, not worrying about how other feels, ie. his own son, who was clearly devastated about that fact that his own friend could potentially be murdered or even harmed in gruesome ways.

1. David (our various views/ analysis):

   • He is someone who is trying to keep to himself, retaining a low profile to keep what little interest his family had towards him. This is seen in how he hides in his parents’ bedroom where his mother lays in bed so to stay hidden for awhile after the midday meal until coast is clear and he could escape without being assigned a chore to do in the house.

   • The previous point also links to how David is lying low because of the events that has happened so far, and he doesn’t wish for a bad relation with his family as he still doesn’t not wish to be distant or unrelated to his family.

   • He is also someone who is sympathetic to people who has experienced, in which feeling as if a tiny blemish makes no difference to a person as compared to a normal being. This is seen in how he is able to

2. Joseph Strorm (David’s Father):

   • He is someone who like his own character in other chapters is still very self-righteous/ prideful. This is evident in how he although feeling angered by how the Inspector took his own time to stroll in to inspect the newly born baby, he doesn't lash out as he doesn’t want to tarnish his own pride, as well as to show how nervous he actually was towards the birth of the newborn baby. He also holds himself to a high standard of not quarreling with the Inspector as it would be unwise and will cause him to be easily targetted.

   • Father is also someone who sticks hard to his morals, often scolding others and shaming them should they not follow the same path, no matter the situation.

3. Emily Strorm (David’s Mother):

   • She is someone who is hard-headed, often sticking to morals, in which she will choose her own faith over family whom she has a much stronger bond with. This is seen in how although Harriet begs Emily to allow her to borrow her newly born child so that her Deviant child can live down with a certified certificate of birth, due to her not wanting to live with the pain of losing/ giving up another child for the 3rd time, as well as not wanting her husband, Henry to find for another woman to marry and have children with as she will be left with nothing.

   • However, Emily ignores her pleads and decides to kick her out of her own home, shaming Harriet (her own blood sister) and wishing that she will repent for her ‘sins’, showing how much she cares for her own faith rather than family, as when compared to a real life world.

   • She is also someone who acts first before fully comprehending the entirety of the situation. This is seen in how after she and Joseph has kicked Harriet out their home, and Joseph is shaming Harriet for being such a ‘Devil’s advocate’ and that she should be ashamed of having such a thought of exchanging babies to get a certificate for her Deviant baby. But Emily defends Harriet, saying that maybe Harriet was not in the right mind, unsure if she is right or wrong to have kicked Harriet, her own blood sister out of her house.

   • Adding on to the previous point, Emily is also unsure about Harriet’s behaviour, seemingly very worried for her own sister and obviously does not want any harm to come towards Harriet, although the impulsive act of morality steps in, she overall does not want Harriet to be harmed physically or mentally in any way, feeling very guilty and upset when Harriet leaves and the hard truth of what Harriet might do after the interaction between both sisters.

4. Mary Strorm (David’s Sister):

   • She is someone who is responsible, helping to take the wheel when other authorial figures are busy. This is seen in how she bosses the other maids around, helping Mother and Father in keeping the house tidy while they are busy worrying with the news of the newborn.

5. Inspector:

   • He is someone who does things his own or following the government’s way rather than catering to others around him. This is seen in how he leisurely walks into David’s home and stalls for time although knowing how pissed Joseph is for making him wait a long period, other than that, he also takes his time to inspect the newborn, continuing to heighten anxiousness and worry.

6. Petra (David’s newborn sister):

   • Although not mentioned much, she appears to be of no deviation on the outside, but as we continue down the book, we realise that she is indeed a deviant, just like David and the others.

7. Aunt Harriet (David’s Aunt):

   • She is someone who trusts that bond is stronger than rules, in which seen in how she begs her own sister to borrow Petra so that her child who has a slight deviation can fly under the radar, although knowing how faithful Emily is towards the religion/ faith. She even throws away pride just to try and salvage her child, but to no avail.

   • She is someone who is willing to love out of care itself and not because the baby follows “Definition of Man”. This is seen in how she hugs her child close to her even when it is rejected by her own blood/ family, showing that she cares deeply about her child and not because her child follows her faith.

8. Uncle Henry (David’s Uncle; married to Aunt Harriet):

   • He is someone who seems to be strict with religion, mentioned in how he might feel towards knowing that Harriet has produced yet another Deviational child, possibly sending Harriet away due to the rules that Waknuk have. He may also marry to someone else as he may deem Harriet too worthless of producing proper heirs without any deviation.

• shows the extent of David’s family in ignoring the existence of a newborn baby before she/he is examined and deemed “true”.

“You have the effrontery to bring your monster into my house, and tell me it’s nothing much!”

• shows how Emily Strorm doesn’t see any child that is not “true” as human regardless whether it is her sister’s child or not. It also shows how much she stands with her beliefs as she doesn’t hesitate to call her own sister’s baby a monster, not considering if Harriet would feel hurt.

“I thought perhaps I could save her somehow. I love her.”

• shows a mother’s love for her child no matter the circumstances.

“You wear the cross on your dress to protect you, but you have not worn it always in your heart.”

• tells us that although Aunt Harriet wears the cross on her dress, it is merely just for show and she doesn’t carry the belief truly in her heart.

• tells us how Harriet saw the world as a cruel, heartless place, where she did not understand the merciless rules and why people were made to live in misery “just because” of a small blasphemy they had. She describes the blasphemies as ‘the weak’ and ‘the unhappy and unfortunate’, wishing compassion and happiness on them as they have suffered. This tells us Aunt Harriet feels empathy for them and how much she finds that the rules are absolutely ridiculous.

Analysis of important characters:

1. David (our various views/ analysis):

   • He is someone who is unaware of the fact there may be other deviants other than the ones he can currently talk to. This is seen how he is so surprised that Petra, his younger sister, could control others via telepathy, as well as send a message very strongly, which was able to make others hear her urgency from afar, a much longer distance than what David and the others can communicate from. This also shows how David did not put much thought into how anyone else could be a telepath other than those whom talk to him.

   • He is also someone who is much cautious now, more aware of his surroundings and more sensitive to how he should act to keep himself in check, so as to not draw any unnecessary attention and put up the act of being a “normal being”.

2. Petra (David’s Younger Sister):

   • Although not mentioned much, if we look at how other characters consider her, she will mostly likely be one of the strongest out of them. However, it is more risky, as she is also the youngest amongst them, she may not have the common sense to protect herself as she may not understand why is there a need to hide things from her family, causing potential harm to David and the rest as she may rat them out. Hence she has to be protected for the sake of not risking leaks and have the chance to know more about herself and how her powers works.

3. Angus Morton (Rosalind’s Father):

   • Although not mentioned much, we can see how he is much more lenient in following the rules that Waknuk prided itself on. This is seen in how he owns a horse that is obviously a blasphemy but still keeps it and gets it approved to be able to work on his farm proves the point of being much carefree of the rules. As he is more carefree, it tells readers that he is more less strict on how he pushes the “Accursed is the Mutant” phrase as compared to Joseph in his own household.

4. Rosalind Morton (Angus Morton’s Daughter):

   • She is someone who is much more oblivious towards the danger of telling others around her that she is able to telepathically communicate with others. This is seen in how she straight up tells one of the men in the field about how she could hear Petra yelling very very loudly and that whoever could not hear it could be deaf, although mentioned by the men in the field that he did not hear a thing at all.

   • She is also someone who is much more worried about how Petra may be too young to understand. This is seen in how she rejects the idea of telling Petra about how she has telepathic abilities due to the fact that she may be to young to remember what happened and if she is not aware of it, to Petra the situation may not even have happened, making it unnecessary trouble to tell her and a potential danger if someone overheard the conversation, especially since Joseph is a tyrant when it comes to dealing with deviants or offences.

5. Sophie (David’s friend who escaped to the fringes):

   • Although not mentioned much, we can see how David still feels remorseful of that day and how he feels about the events as he had the same dream of Joseph killing someone due to them being a deviant but this time it was Petra, showing that he still cares about Sophie and see Petra in the position that Sophie once was.

6. Micheal (One of the telepaths whom David talks to):

   • Although only mentioned a bit, he is someone who rather be normal then have to go through the life of being constantly wary and considered a deviant, as he has to live his days trying to conceal his true self just to survive from the strict society that he is in.

7. Old Jacob (Farmer):

   • He is someone who believes that the olden days of dealing with deviants was much better. This is seen as he claims that nowadays the punishment for owing crops that are blasphemies are just fines, rather than being beaten up. Another thing that he mentions is that if any deviants were born, they would be burnt like other any crops that are not good.

   • He is also someone who thinks that everyone is slacking in their duty to eradicate Deviants. This is seen in how he says that the government regulations are now made by people who has a weak heart and how those with high positions are nothing but just all bark no bite, very likely to have never seen a mutant in their lives.

8. Uncle Axel (David’s Uncle):

   • He is someone who is aware of how things work around Waknuk. This is seen in how he tells David what he reckons will happen as the seasons produce worse crops and it is evident that he is right as per David’s observation.

9. Anne (One of the telepaths that David talks to):

   • Although not mentioned much, it is obvious that whatever she is announcing is not considered that much of a good news, creating tensions amongst readers and the other telepaths whom she will elaborate to in the next chapter.

• This shows Rosalind’s realisation that Petra could contact others via telepathy as well, but was far more powerful than any of them.

• shows how something as amazing as telepathy was a curse to them in their world, how the “normal” with no supposed powers were happier when it should really be the ones with the powers that have advantages.

  
  

Analysis of important characters:

1. David (our various views/ analysis):

   • He is someone who is protective of Petra and the other telepaths, being careful not to jeopardise their safety or their cover in Waknuk for they would be punished or even done much worse due to the fact that they although are deviants, are passed as normals, which is strictly against the rules of how Waknuk works. This is seen in how he prepares to leave the house with Petra, packing essentials, as well as minding what makes a sound to be extra cautious to not get caught sneaking out of the house although the urgency and panic is rising. This also shows how David is prepared to face the unknown although being scared himself, wanting to ensure the safety of others over how he feels, so that everyone can escape to safety or escape unscathed.

2. Micheal (One of the telepaths David talks to):

   • He is someone who is strategic in leading the telepaths to escape Waknuk. This can be seen in him planning to start a rumour so that Rosalind and David can head towards the other direction without the increased risk of being followed, as well as him ensuring that weapons brought are lightweight, soft, and not bulky, wanting the route to leaving Waknuk be free of any traceable trails and smoother sailing. He also helps to advise Sally and Katherine when they are being inspected, trying to aid them so no jeopardising or outing can happen. This then shows how Micheal is the brain of the telepaths as he steps up to aid others, so to prevent the risk of any information being leaked and all of the telepaths to be caught.

3. Uncle Axel (David’s Uncle):

   • Although not mentioned much and no involvement in the chapter, we can tell that he is someone who is knowledgeable and is caring. This can be seen in how he looks beyond “deviations” and just sees David as his nephew, unlike others in Waknuk. Not only that, he also advises David on what to do and saves David and the other telepaths when they are stuck in a situation where their safety is risked.

4. Petra (David’s younger sister):

   • She is immature and oblivious of her current situation. Just like our main character when he first started out, he did not understand the circumstances of why deviants were so bad and that he was one himself. This can be seen in how Petra is somewhat impatient, unaware of the situation and interrupting David and Micheal’s conversation about the Fringes. This shows how oblivious she is, the fact that she is not scared but just confused to why David and Rosalind are leaving their house to find someplace else to stay.

5. Rosalind (Angus Morton’s Daughter):

   • She is optimistic although in such as horrid situation. This can be seen in her comforting David when both of them are scared, holding onto David’s hand tightly so to attempt comforting him/ calming him down from stress and anxiety.

6. Sally and Katherine (One of the telepaths David talks to):

   • Although they were not mentioned that much, we can tell that they are ready to risk their lives to protect others, as seen in how although scared for being interrogated, they still answer the inspector, while concealing the identities of others.

The evidences are as follows:

1. Strategic/ wise:

   • He plans to become a posses so to protect the location that David, Rosalind and Petra are, planning to start rumours of where their location is, so it would be hard to track down and rid of any leads before other posses could say anything. He also plans ahead, even asking another telepath to aid him by spreading a rumour of where all three of them are should his rumour of where they are headed to is caught to be false or if all three of them have moved locations.

   • if it wasn’t for Michael who spotted Petra’s error of ‘Z’ instead of ‘S’, they would have been headed to Zealand instead of the Sealand.

Analysis of important characters:

1. David (our various views/ analysis)

   • He is much more defensive over the people he love and care for as seen in how he attempts to attack the man who tried to do something towards Rosalind, as well as being cautious and protective over Petra.

   • He is also someone who although has changed views ever since finding out that he is a deviant, still is hung about old beliefs, unable to fully shake it off. This is seen in how when the other man in the pannier tells him about a much different perspective about deviants and tribulation and David is stunned as it is much different from what he has learnt growing up.

2. Rosalind (Angus Morton’s daughter):

   • She is someone who is protective of herself and others, seen in how she masks her true self so to be able to fight off other deviants and Waknukians so to ensure safety and security of others.

3. Michael (One of the telepaths that David talks to):

   • He is someone who is cautious as he ensures where David, Rosalind and Petra. This is seen as he inquires where David are heading to after being captured and even tries to ensure that all of them are safe ad not harmed.

4. Petra (David’s younger sister):

   • She is someone who is very much oblivious as she does not know what is going on around her, but just only knows that they are on the run for something and there will be help from someone far away so to ensure safety.

   • She is also someone who is somewhat playful and cheerful in this gloomy situation, this is seen as the rest are serious and trying to ensure that none of them are killed or harmed in any way, while Petra is smug about getting the sealanders words right, ignoring her surroundings and the horrors that occur (aka the various killings and fights).

5. The man in the other pannier:

   • He is someone who is knowledgeable just like Uncle Axel, which he also has extensive knowledge of the past, seen in how he brought up that the place Waknuk is located at was once filled with deviations too, but is more settled down, as well as having different opinions on what ‘God’ does to Waknuk and to the fringes.

6. Sealanders (other telepaths that are from a far away island/ land):

• shows how much Sophie has experienced

• Sophie has been put down so many times and was just thrown into a dire situation, causing her to keel over at any sort of affection, hence the reaction towards wanting to defend Gordon to David and the rest.

• Shows that Sophie will want any sort of affection as she has been treated badly compared to someone who does not have physical deviation but is still a deviant.

• shows how much Rosalind is as a person.

• Her experience is that she has never been treated badly unlike Sophie, so she still has some resolve of self-preservation and respect for herself.

“This is the Fringes”

• Shows that you have to be there in order to understand it fully as David having just been there for awhile is confused about the rules and is unused to it, whereas Sophie is very much informed and more aware of how things work despite them both being deviants.

1. David

• David continues to be the centre protagonist, showing resilience and cautiousness as he navigates the dangers of the Fringes. He faces problems like his uncle’s potential interest in Rosalind, while trying his best to keep Rosalind and Petra safe, analysing his environment to find a way to escape, highlighting his survival instincts in dangerous situations.

2. Sophie

• Sophie is brought back into the story, as a character who is in love with David’s uncle, Gordon Strorm, but is seen to face challenges with his interest in Rosalind. She has grown hardened and bitter due to her harsh lifestyle in the Fringes. She has become fiercely independent and resourceful, although her life is filled with suffering and survival.

3. Rosalind

• Rosalind remains as a strong and independent woman, handling most of the group’s survival efforts and making sure Petra remains safe. She maintains her courage and keeps a brave face despite being in an unfamiliar environment and facing challenges with Gordon whom has interest in her and the rest of the Fringes people.

4. Michael

• Although Michael is physically incapable of helping the group, he plays a critical role in helping the group navigate and plan their next moves, leading them to the most safe paths. He is well planned and intelligent, remaining in Waknuk to monitor the search efforts and providing intel.

5. Fringes people

• The Fringes people are introduced fully in this chapter, appearing to be all the deviants who were banished and sent away into the Fringes, who now live in survival and withstand harsh conditions within their own community. They are seen as harsh and threatening, not knowing their next move and what they were going to do the the group (newcomers).
