During the Gilded Age children were facing multiple problems. Their family needed more money so the children began working but the jobs they were working were not safe or healthy for them. The conditions were having the children working "long hours, sometimes bent over all day long, unhealthy and dangerous conditions, and had harsh treatment," as stated in the Intro to Child Labor slides.

In the Gilded Age workers were being taken advantage of by the people in charge. Like for instance in a document we read about the homestead strike you could clearly see why some workers might be angry. Most of the people who work at the mill were unskilled workers who got paid very little and did the jobs no one wanted to really do. In the document it states, "They did the dirty work at the plant: lifting, shoveling, pushing. They worked a twelve-hour day with only two vacation days a year and earned under $10 a week."

Immigrants were a big portion of the men working in the mines. They worked long hard hours. The conditions they were under were just not that great at all. In order for you to really get the feel for what went on I encourage you to watch the video on the mine wars.

Women during the prohibition aren't really talked about but they are really affected by what was going on. The fact that their husband would instead of coming home with his check would spend the money at the local saloon. So it was up to the mother to figure out how to keep her family up. Also, there were saloons on every corner of towns so when women would walk by they would be hassled by the men drinking there at the time.

The unions were the people who were trying to "recruit" the workers of mills, factories, etc. When doing this they were trying to help them by giving them safety, telling the people in charge what was right and wrong, told the men in charge how much a person must be paid. Sometimes they helped but in certain situations they did not.

The first settlement house was in East London which "provide social services and education to the poor workers who lived there," stated in the website provided.

For example, Nellie Bly, she was a muckraker that wanted to expose what was going on in an insane asylum. She then voluntarily put herself in there to get inside intel.

The Historical Lesson

The lesson from my point of view is that everything might seem to be great but everything has its flaws. Every single one of these people or ideas seemed to be okay but really things were really bad for them. If you really step back and take it all in that the real lesson is that to dig a little deeper or look at the fine detail.
