Problem: They were struggling to cross the border<br>3. Resolution: They tried even harder to cross the border and did<br>4. Important Events: When it was their first time coming to American, and sunflower seeds.<br>5. Important People: El Guero and the guide (coyote)<br>6. Why are they important? Because they helped the family get into America.<br>7. Theme with quote:&nbsp; You can do anything if you put your mind to it "They crossed the border on their 3rd attempt"<br>8. A word worth explaining: Coyote means guide<br>9. Figurative or descriptive language: "Far in the distance, I saw two red lights, like evil eyes." The significance of the comparison is that Reyna is comparing the lights to evil eyes.<br>10. Author's Purpose: To show the difficulties immigrants had trying to cross the border.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. Setting: Abuela Evila's House, Abuela Chinta's House&nbsp;<br>2. Problem: Papi comes back and wants to take his kids with him to El Otro Lado but originally only has money for one. Mami will not let them take Betty with them.<br>3. Resolution: There isn't really a good end to the problem. Their father decides to find money to take them all back but their mom refuses to let them take Betty along with them.<br>4. Important Events: Papi comes back, they are going to el otro lado,&nbsp;<br>5. Important People: Papi, Betty, Mami, and Reyna&nbsp;<br>6. Why are they important? Papi came back, Betty cannot come because Mami won't let her, Reyna convinces Papi to take all the kids, and Mami isn't going to el otro lado and won't let Betty go. &nbsp;<br>7. Theme with quote: Immigration to other places, especially America in this book, separates families and destroys relationships. "I shook my head, unable to believe him. ' The last time you left, you were gone for eight years Papi, '&nbsp; I said."<br>8. A word worth explaining: El Otro Lado - the other side, refers to the U.S<br>9. Figurative or descriptive language: "I told you she was not good enough for you, Natalio. I told you she would be trouble. But you didn't listen." (Abuela Evila, page 151)It shows how much Papi's mother and some of his family hated his ex-wife.<br>10. Author's Purpose:&nbsp; To show the return of papi coming back and how he still loves his family but papi and mami are not on good terms</div>]]></description>

Problem: The problem that occurred was paying for Mago's uniform and Betty's medicine for her face.<br>3. Resolution:  The resolution is Tia Emperatriz made Mago her uniform and Mago borrowed money to pay for the medience<br>4. Important Events: Betty's face is burned, Tia Emeratriz made Mago's flag bearer uniform, Carlos got in trouble for climbing a fruit tree <br>5. Important People: Tia Emeratiz, Mago, Betty and Carlos <br>6. Why are they important?  Mago ( Reyna's Oldest Sister ) she is twelve and is a hard worker. Carlos He cares about his sisters. Tia Emperatriz she cares about Mago, Carlos, Reyna, and Betty.<br>7. Theme with quote: " Thanks be the God." Abuelra chinta said, crossing herself maybe mago doesn't have to work at all."<br>8. A word worth explaining:  Dejalos : leave it alone<br>9. Figurative or descriptive language: deafening "...wrapped up like a mummy..."  :...her face looked as if it were melting..."<br>10.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Emory, Keys, and Isaac<br>1. Setting: Mother returns after the wrestler dies<br><br>2. Problem: Her grief from the wrestler dying<br><br>3. Resolution: After her cleansing she is able to move on.  <br><br>4. Important Events: Beginning- Wrestler dying<br>Middle- The cleansing of Reyna's mother<br>End- Loss of "governments land"<br><br>5. Important People: Mami, Carlos, and Abuelita chinta <br><br>6. Why are they important: Mami- she is trying to recover from the loss of the wrestler. <br>Carlos- He loved his mother so much that he would stay as a squatter for the land, even while he was sick.<br>Abuelita - Kept the family as a whole.<br><br>7. Theme with qoute: The mother's pain and what she is going through. "when Mami came home, she ran over to the river to save her land, but by then, new squatters had moved in. " <br><br>8. A word worth explaining:  Cleanse: Free someone from sin or guilt<br><br>9. Figurative or descriptive language: "Then, just like a little girl, Mami drew a picture of a house." <br><br>10. Author's Purpose: To show the mother is trying to change for the better of the family &amp; her self. </div>]]></description>

Problem: Mami comes home with another man much younger than her. This causes Mago to go on a rant which causes Mago to faint.&nbsp;<br><br>3. Resolution: Mami decides to leave her children again because she knows she is hated by Mago and just wants to be with Rey.&nbsp;<br><br>4. Important Events: Christmas Dinner, Mago has her 6th grade graduation, Mago falls in love, Rey is introduced, Mago throws a tantrum, Mami leaves.&nbsp;<br><br>5. Important People: Don Oscar, Rey, Mago, Mama.&nbsp;<br><br>6. Why are they important?Don Oscar is important because he is Mago's godfather. Problem: Started when their parents left and now Carlos is searching for a father figure Reyna is confused and Mago is still trying to be the "Mother" <br>3. Resolution: Carlos finds a father figure <br>4. Important Events: Carlos has hepatitis, he stopped going to school for a while for work, he became closer to his uncle, his uncles got into a knife fight, so he had to stop working with his uncle and had to go back to school.<br>5. Important People: Tio Crece, Carlos, Abuelita Chinta, Tio Mario, Mago, and Reyna.<br>6. Why are they important?: They are staying with Abuela Chinta, Tio Crece iss who Carlos looks up to, Tio Mario is who Tio Crece got into the knife fight with which made Carlos stop being around Tio Crece, Carlos, Mago, and Reyna is who the book is about.<br>7. Theme with quote: The more their parents leave them, the more independent and distant they become. "Stop telling me what to do."  Carlos would sometimes say to Mago <br>8. A word worth explaining: Datura Stramonium - A strong-smelling poisonous datura with large trumpet-shaped white flowers and toothed leaves, which has become a weed of waste ground in many countries.<br>9. Figurative or descriptive language: "I felt as if i has a scorpion inside of me that was stinging my heart again and again." <br>10. Author's Purpose:  To show how they were becoming more independent and to also show Carlos relationship with Tio Crece and what all happened in their relationship. </div>]]></description>
