Danforth has excessive pride in his authority and believes that due to his position what he believes and decides is the truth. This leads him to sentence many innocent people, including the kind Rebecca Nurse to death when he is convinced of their guilt.

Parris continuously fought to maintain his power, as it is the only way he can have respect in the town. Therefore, in the scene where Danforth is trying to get Proctor to confess, we can see Parris’ greed for power as he keeps telling Proctor to confess in order to prevent riot and unrest towards Parris’ authority. In contrast to Hales intention to save Proctors life, this shows Parris’ selfishness.
