This happened in the early 1830’s. The Nullification Crisis was a dispute over tariffs, where the North supported high tariffs and the South opposed them. South Carolina ended up threatening to nullify the tariffs and even possibly secede. It happened in 1850. The balance of power in senate between slave and free states was even until California, which caused lots of tension. The Compromise of 1850 was made so that civil war would not break out so soon. It happened in 1857. Dred Scott’s master had taken him to the free states of Illinois and Wisconsin. When he returned to Missouri, he sued the state because he claimed his time in the free states had made him a free man. His case ended up in the Supreme Court. It happened in 1860. There were 4 candidates for president. The 4 candidates were Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John Bell, and John Breckinridge. Abraham Lincoln won, despite not being on the ballot in most southern states. He published the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862. The Emancipation Proclamation stated that all slaves in the south would be freed, which came into effect in 1863. Abraham Lincoln did this because he thought that the freed slaves would be able to join the North and fight against the South.
