Loyalty

Loyalty has been very important in times of war and survival; but nowadays I believe that loyalty isn't valued the same way it used to be.. We really don't have a need for this certain type of "gang" loyalty. Yes there are situations where you have to be loyal to friends or family, but it isn't a do or die situation. I believe that loyalty isn't as important in the ways that it used to be, but I do believe that it is important in newer ways. In past decades, loyalty in gangs, wars and/or being loyal to your King/Queen or leader. Some new ways of loyalty are things like being loyal to your company/business partner, or costumer loyalty. It seems nowadays there are more rewards for being loyal to a store that you shop at or a company you work for. For example, almost every grocery store or fast food chain has loyalty cards, and for continuing consuming their products you get rewarded. Or, for example my step-dad got a radio player from his government office for being loyal to his job for 15 years. Loyalty still plays a big role in society, but in different ways then the past.
2) I definitely value loyalty over fitting in and being popular. The reason being, because I would much rather have friends then enemies. If leaving loyalty behind, and becoming popular means betraying people and people betraying you, I'd rather not. That would just make you enemies with so many people and nothing good will ever come of that. I would rather have a smaller group of people I trust then be surrounded with people who hate me, just to have a status that means nothing. i believe that being loyal in a friendship can mean many different things such as, commitment or dedication. These things are important to me in a relationship with people I want to be able to trust. In conclusion, this is why I believe that loyalty is more important then fitting in.

This is ironic because, Ponyboy came home past his curfew that night and he responded to Darry with "I didn't mean to". Darry got extremely angry when he responded with this. But, when he slapped Ponyboy and then Ponyboy starting running away, he yelled to him "I didn't mean to Ponyboy!". This an example of verbal irony. I find this ironic because he used the same excuse Ponyboy did and he got extremely mad at Ponyboy for saying it.

One of the boys went to the middle and announced the rules. This was a skin fight, so no weapons allowed. Darry asked the Socs who wanted to fight him. Nobody seemed to answer until Paul did, Paul Holden. He was an old friend of Darrys and they played on the same Highschool Football team. But now, there was bad blood between the two. They slowly circled around eachother, once one of them punched the rumble would start. Everyone was waiting ready to begin, when they heard someone hollering at them to wait. It was Dally and he ran and jumped on a Soc, the rumble began. It turns out Daly convinced a nurse to let him out. The rumble didn't last long and Ponyboy was on the ground when he heard someone say "We won!". The Socs had run away, got in their cars and drove away as fast as they could.

Why are these important to the Story?

I believe that these outcomes are important to the story because they truly show what type of life the greasers lived. It was unpredictable and very unfortunate at times. I believe that she added these ending to also show the result of gangs and their lifestyle. Aswell, the death of Johnny was unexpected. I began to feel sorry for Johnny, and all his life he was neglected by his parents. When you take a step back and take a look at it, S.E Hinton gave him the best ending he possibly could have. I would much rather him die a Hero, then a kid who was always pushed around and recognized for the genuinely good kid he was. For Dally I feel like she was trying to show the consequence of certain actions Dally took. Dally made some pretty questionable decisions and apparently he wanted to get shot, and die, according to Ponyboy. So again, when you look at it she gave him the best possible ending. Of course Dally wasn't going to change. But I would much rather Dally die how he wanted to then locked away miserable from all of his crimes. I believe that these endings are necessary because they give closure and it starts to tie up loose ends in the book. They are also logical. Of course Dally was never going to change and then be a regular man, starting a stable family etc. It makes sense that he got shot by the Police and died. It does to me at least. Also for Johnny this makes sense to me because he deserved to be recognized for something good because he has been neglected and forgotten all his life.

The imagery in this poem is sight. When I read the poem I imagined the changing of bright summer to a cold winter. When he said "So Eden sank to grief" I realized that that was a biblical term for paradise and that it is sadness that "Paradise" is drenched in. When he says "Her early leaf's a flower" I can imagine in the spring time the trees have flower blooms on them. Overall I can image that this is describing different parts of life and how nature is a metaphor for life.

Question 2- What is Robert Frost Suggesting with this Imagery

I believe that Robert Frost is suggesting that nothing that is perfect and beautiful can stay. We are told this all the time, nothing good lasts forever. I believe he is suggesting this by saying, "When dawn turns to day" because dawn is always one of the two most beautiful parts of the day. It's captivating and considered one of life's beauties. Yet it only lasts about 30 minutes, when the day time and darkness last for hours. As well when says "Her early leaf is a flower" it reminded my of trees blooming in the spring time before the grow out to leaves and all become the same. Essentially Robert Frost was trying to express was that the good things in life only last short amounts of time and that whats makes us appreciative of them.

This poem by RObert Frost has a strong relation to The Outsiders. First off, Johnny. He was the gangs pet and everyone loved him. He would never touch a soul and he was kind and innocent. That was until he killed a man, and ran away. Then, he died. Dally had loved Johnny and now that he was gone, Dally went into a spiral and then he got shot and died. I feel like Robert Frost is also trying say how once the good is goe it goes into a domino effect where then everyone and everything is going bad or feeling sad. Dally, like I mentioned before was shot right after Johnny's death. This was apart of the domino effect, after the good {Johnny} died.

Question 4- Theme

The theme topic I believe that relates to the poem and the Outsiders is that all good things must come to an end. In the Outsiders Johnny tells Ponyboy to "Stay gold". By this I believe he meant to stay innocent and in the poem it suggests that after the good is gone there is no more innocence. Once Johnny died, Dally was shot and if they good had never come to an end, then the bad would've never followed. In all, I believe the theme that related to is that nothing in life that is good will stay for long and that if the good is gone the bad will definitely follow.
