I have spent my childhood in a city so I can clearly distinguish the quality of life. There is a lot to explore in this village, we have hills with streams of water flowing down the rocky natural stairs near my house, this is the beauty you could experience only in monsoons. It was fascinating when I first discovered and explored the hill using this rocky path uphill. Then we also have a brook or rivulet at the bottom of this hill. This particular place holds lot of memories as we used to catch fishes using a piece of rag cloth with my grandfather. Because as expected of villages almost every household relies on groundwater for there needs and since we do not have any rain water harvesting systems the groundwater does not get recharged enough and then people start using extreme measures to get water, as in they try to dig tube wells, exploiting the nature or rather destroying it. The folktales which were passed on from generations to generations made an imbibing connection of ours to the ethnicity of sacred groves and we the current generation do engage in its conservation. There is always a pleasant feeling when we are near to the sacred groves and even though being smaller units, they are rich with a wide variety of smaller species that in one way or other way serves nature. We too have something like that called the Kolam Varavu Pooja which symbolizes the victory of Devi Durga over the demons. It is believed over generations that our wishes will be satisfied once we offer the same. The festive or ritual, projects out the communal harmony of our village (Cheppad) and it highlights our culture.
