I will replace one multiple-choice grammar activity with a short speaking task that lets students actually use the target structure in context to create more positive washback

Instead of just giving scores on writing tasks, I’ll provide brief comments on what each student did well and one specific thing to improve to ensure formative feedback, not just correction

In my next lesson, I will replace multiple-choice grammar drills with short-answer or gap-fill tasks that reflect real communication. I realized from today’s session that test formats shape classroom behavior — when we only test recognition, students learn to guess rather than use language meaningfully. By adding constructed-response items, I can encourage deeper processing and help students apply language in context, creating positive washback and stronger alignment between assessment and learning objectives

Next time, I will share the scoring rubric and sample responses before the writing activity. I learned that transparency is a crucial factor in generating positive washback: when students understand assessment criteria, they focus on quality rather than quantity and feel more confident about what success looks like. Providing clear feedback based on these rubrics will also strengthen students’ motivation and self-regulation, aligning assessment, teaching, and learning more effectively
