After I introduce what kindness means, I would then go on to provide a few books that give examples of kindness. A Small Kindness is one of many books that shows kids different acts of kindness that they can do for their friends or family. Do an activity that shows the rippling effect that one act of kindness can create.

To start of the kindness theme, I would begin with this book because its an informational book to teach young children about what kindness is. This books dives into the meaning of kindness from the different perspectives of Lizzie's family members. Ask all the students what kindness means to them.

When pairing this book with the topic of kindness, it teaches students the importance of kind acts by showing how it makes a person feel when a nice thing happens to them. The idea of "filling a bucket" can help teach students when to be kind to others. For this activity, I could make a large anchor chart that's titled "How Can I Fill a Bucket?". Having the students brainstorm their own ideas of kindness and hanging the poster somewhere they can look at can serve a reminder to be kind and ways to show kindness everyday.

This book is a great example of how people feel when they aren't treated with kindness, and it also shows some ways for children to give a little happiness to the people around them. Talking with your students about times where they didn't feel like they were treated with kindness to show other students and idea of how they shouldn't treat their friends.

This is another informational book; and this one is about manners. Manners and kindness go hand in hand and I think it's important to teach both. Implementing the saying "Do onto others as you would have them of unto you" is a saying we used in my classroom that I would love to do in my own. This saying reminds students to treat others as they would want to be treated. It teaches them to be mindful of their words and actions.

This book is all about teaching children how to deal with their big emotions. Young children do not have the ability to work through emotions as easily as adults do, so obviously they get frustrated and break things or hurt people. Teaching children to use kind words and gentle actions is an act of kindness that they can use in times of frustration. Have the kids get into pairs or small groups and have them practice using kind words and gentle actions in situations that may be stressful or frustrating.

Kindness is seen in many different actions that people do very day. Almost ever day in almost every place we see people who are different than us. This includes people of different races, cultures, backgrounds, age, gender and ability. Included is a book that talks about differences we see every day and how it's important do include everyone no matter the differences. I would read this book after the 'pre-reading schema building' to discuss differences and why they're important.

This is a heartwarming story that shows different opportunities to show compassion, kindness and empathy that we are faced with every day. The book shows the positive effects of these acts. Use a visual literary awareness activity to show how these kind acts can make someone feel.

This poetry book is about teaching mindfulness and the important of slowing down to understand emotions and their environment. Teaching this type of mindfulness can teach children to be full of kindness that will radiate though their words and actions. I would use a graphic organizer worksheet that helps children identify their certain feelings and why they feel them.

Kindness Starts With You would be my final book on the topic of kindness. This book teaches children that the ripple of goodness a start with one act of kindness from them. If they have the courage to do it then the ripple will never end and inspires them to want to be a part of something good in the world. It also shows the importance of treating people how you want to be treated which was a topic of one of the books previously mentioned. I think this book at the end really ties together the theme of kindness in its entirely by having relevance to all the other books that we will read. For the final activity, I would find an activity template that says something like : "I Will Show Kindness By..." and give the students the opportunity to brainstorm their own ways to show kindness. They can use the examples from the books we've read throughout this lesson.
