Battle of Midway

One of the most important naval battles in WWII. Before this battle Japan had a stronger navy than the US. But after the Battle of Midway, the navy forces were equal. The US broke the Japanese code and was able to get a head start on their plans. The US permanently damaged the Japanese navy and allowed the US and Allies to take an offensive position.

"Midway thrust the warlords [Axis Powers] back on their heels, caused their ambitious plans..........to be canceled, and forced on them an unexpected, unwelcome, defensive role".

This was said by Cecil one week before the invasion. He was Britain's chief representative at the League of Representatives.

Battle of Okinawa

The Battle of Okinawa was the largest Pacific Island Battle of WWII. 287,000 US soldiers faced 130,000 Japanese soldiers. The troops were fighting for army bases that were necessary for the US to invade Japan. Japan lost over 77,000 soldiers. The Allies suffered over 65,000 casualties, 14,000 of those dead.

Doolittle Raid

The Doolittle Raid was an air raid by the United States on the Japan. The United States raided Japan’s capital, Tokyo, as well as many other Japanese cities on April 18th, 1942. It was a retaliation on Japan for their attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. This raid boosted the American morale while it brought havoc to the Japanese. It was planned and led by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle, U.S. Army Air Forces.

"Our destination is Tokyo, we're going to bomb Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kobe, and Nagoya." -Doolittle
