His parents were murdered by Voldemort when Harry was a baby. Harry survived the killing curse, and was sent to live with his aunt and uncle. When he was sent to the Dursley's as a baby, they hid from Harry that his parents were wizards. That's why, when he was 11 and got a letter in the mail saying that he had been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry had no idea what was going on. He then learns the truth about his past, and must figure out how to fit in, in the wizarding world. 
Hagrid is the Hogwarts gamekeeper. He introduces Harry to the wizarding world.
Ron Weasley is Harry's first friend at Hogwarts and continues on to become one of his best friends.
Hermoine Granger is Harry's other best friend. She is a know it all when it comes to school.
Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts. He is a friend to Harry at times when it is needed.
The Dursley's are Harry's only family. They raised him under a cruel roof.
