“Break”

UOI “Typography”

I got the idea of “break” because at first, I was thinking of words that could mean many different things at once. Then “break” came to me, and I used it for my typography. I decided to use colors like red, blue, and orange because I felt like they invoked emotion. Objects like glass and wooden sticks collected at the school playground were used in my typography as well as acrylic paint. I used a stick because it had a texture that made it look realistic like it was actually a part of a real hammer. I used the glass because it is very fragile and easy to break, which therefore connects to my typography word, “break”. I painted a heart in my typography to represent something that could not literally break but inside it could shatter just as easily as glass. A hammer is a tool that is used to break objects, so I included that as well. The letters were painted to look like it was breaking apart, which of course also is connected to my typography word, “Break”. I made my typography big to ensure that my ‘k’ could fall off at the end. I used a bold and easy-to-see font to make my work clear. This way it would not cause eye strain for my readers when they look at my typography. I used different brush techniques to make sure the paint covered every bit of the wooden board. Sometimes finger painting was used to ensure a smooth and soft texture. The texture needed to be smooth because this way the paint would not affect the way the typography looks. If I could do it again I would reconsider the background color so the letters could be more readable. “Spring” (Punchie) “Insanity” (WeiWei) “Grow” (Ishi) “Beauty” (Sofi) and “Path” (Kao) are among my favorite typographies because they have a deep meaning behind them and because they show a high level of creativity. For example, “Spring” by Punchie is easy to read and shows that no matter what happens something good will always come, like how after every winter there’s always spring. “Insanity” by WeiWei separated the word ‘insanity’ into two different sections to show the difference just two letters can make.WeiWei’s typographies influenced my work because they inspired me to make typographies with a hidden meaning that was cleverly disguised. I chose the word “break” because it had a meaning that was clear but at the same time needed to be found.
