Refer to the video, we learnt that the important is not developing stereotypes when we teaching a kids as a ECE. To be a ECE, we should pass the clear and positive message to the child. Moreover, some children may pop up in their mind, that this country will be like this, they not even to understand this country before come up this conclusion, so we have to guide them. Same as from the video that many people think Africa was a place of beautiful landscapes and with a lot of animals.
Viola

As an Early childhood educator, interpersonal relationship is a very important aspect in our job.It help us to share a unique connection with our co-workers and the children we are working with. Interpersonal relationship skills at workplace allow a better awareness among staff and children.Going beyond a single story is very crucial when we are teaching young children. If they only hear about certain people or places from one point of view, they might accepting one perspective as the whole truth. A single story creates stereotypes and gives a one-sided point of view of something or someone. So as an educator you can see how this affects a child learning. As a result,a single story can lead children to assumptions and conclusions that are untrue and may lead to misunderstandings. In order to correct this form of thinking we must go beyond a single story by engaging children in different activities that reflect different cultures and races as well as earth science ,so that they get to see different aspect and their thinking is not misconstrued.

Vitasha Persaud

Interpersonal relationship is an important aspect in peoples personal lives as well as workplace. As an early childhood educator it is important to have this skill as it creates a special bond, builds trust, and increases positive feelings with co-workers, parents and children. Having good interpersonal relationship skills also raises the level of understanding amongst co-workers and more effective communication.
Children are very innocent and new to any information given to them so it is important that as educators we go beyond "a single story" and educate them correctly. Giving information from one side/point of view, will create stereotypes and assumptions of certain people, places or things. Kids will believe anything adults teach them and will pass on information to others. To avoid children from having stereotypes, misunderstanding, and assumptions we need to include all cultures and race in our learning. This will make them feel everyone is one.

-Faheema Ingar

Interpersonal relationship is essential in early childhood educator's role. It helps to build and maintain relationship with children, parents and co-worker. It is very important to educate children with a positive attitude and provide them with viewpoints that are correct. Children are like a piece of paper, they will contain everything the educator learned. Therefore, it is important to teach children with appropriate information. In addition to this, there should not be racism in education. Engaging children about different cultures and races are important.

- Christie

Canada is a multicultural country. As an ECE student I know that I will work in a place that childrens and teacher are from different cultures. If I have a single story, I can not be a good Early Childhood Educator. This video made me remember of a phrase I knew. It would be translated nearly as "go introduce yourself correct before someone introduces you wrong." So it says me that interpersonal communication is very essential to not to have a single story about anybody. And also I should have an effective communication with the people I study and I will work in the future so that they won't have a single story about me , either.
Seyma Nursah Akcin

The video is talking about the disadvantages of a single story. As ECEs, we should avoid to say a single story to our kids. We need to bear in mind that broaden children's horizons and bring them in different points of view as an important duty for us. Firstly, ECEs need to practice and equip themselves with cultural sensitivity. Secondly, ECEs try to ask open questions to allow children to think out of box and creativity. We also need to have a open-minded attitude towards their response. The last thing is that ECEs do discuss with colleagues and supervisors in order to break their own blind spot.

Interpersonal relationships are crucial as an early childhood educator. During our interactions with children, our values are affecting children’s learning and development at cognitive, communicative, social and emotional levels. Unconscious stereotypes can lead to discrimination. We should be mindful of what we say and be aware of the negative racial stereotypes.

Ka Wai Leung (Carmen)
