The purpose of Operation Market Garden, brain child of Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery, was to get a foothold in Northern Germany. This foothold would allow for Allied forces to plan a full-scale invasion into the Rhine, or German territory.

While Operation Market Garden did liberate the Dutch cities of Eindhoven and Nijmegen, it failed to take the advantage point the Allies were hoping for in order to plan a German invasion.

What cooperation between Allied nations was seen during Operation Market Garden?
Operation Market Garden was approved by both Winston Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt as an appropriate plan to attempt a German invasion. While leaders from several Allied Nations approved the Operation, there were also troops from several nations taking part, such as the US, UK, Poland, Canada, and the Netherlands.
What impact did Operation Market Garden have on World War II?
While Operation Market Garden did end as an Allied failure, it allowed for a partial retrieval of Dutch land from the Nazis, as well as an estimated 8,000 German casualties. The price of the operation, however, was 17,000 Allied lives. This failed mission could have begun an invasion of the Rhine, but instead cost the Allies great numbers.
