School Counselors have a positive effect on students because it allows the students to have a one-on-one private conversation regarding their future. The school counselors are able to provide guidance regarding the student’s current educational needs as well as help the students explore other schools and a variety of programs to help them determine more clearly what field of study the student would like to pursue. School Counselors are of such great value because they can provide more insight and plenty of resources to help the student participating in college preparation programs outside of school. The counselors are also very helpful in assisting the students with the college application process and providing fee waivers where possible. The Learning Institutions that hire School Counselors benefit from the success rate of their students as they understand their pathways to postsecondary education, and the parents benefit as the counselors mentor their child and explain the parent’s expectations of going to college along with explaining the costs associated with attending college.

Dunlop, Erin. “How Can High School Counseling Shape Students' Postsecondary Attendance?

I am not surprised by my test results regarding my preference for Black people over White People as we share the same history and background. Although I am deeply involved in my community, my history, and working with trying to resolve some of the injustices in the world, I do not feel any hatred or ill feelings toward the White people around me. In my generation, there are plenty of White people standing alongside Black people trying to right the wrongs of our ancestors. Our generation is more inclusive of other nationalities and other gender-specific communities, and we are ready for that change that has been a long time coming.

https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html

My test results showed that I have no preference between Fat people and Thin people because I can relate to both. Being Fat or Thin does not define the person or their personality, therefore we as a Nation in my generation are trying to get away from discriminating against others because of being Fat or Thin. There are curvy models being shown on television and playing roles in movies now more so than ever in the past. Being Thin does not make you healthier than a Fat person, so we should be very careful about looking at a Fat person and thinking the worst. In some cases, a Fat person may be more athletic than a Thinner person but if you base your decision just on looks, your eyes may deceive you. We should be ashamed of our past, but not of our Nation's beginning actions of inclusivity.

https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html

As a future school counselor, I believe that every student is different in their own special way and deserves an equal opportunity to be heard within their expressions. Children are very intelligent beings who are not all going to learn things at the same rate as one another. Many students are affected by things in their everyday lives such as their environment, their support system, and their momentary wellbeing. Every student should always be treated with respect and no student should be judged, no student should be made fun of or spoken down upon inside or outside of this safe space. Every student has different needs, and it will be my goal to ensure that all of my students have been accounted for and advocated for. I believe that ethical standards guide the work of school counselors in a way that it helps us to understand what we should and should not be doing as counselors. It also helps to ensure that counselors don’t override or undermine their important roles in the lives of their clients. Personally, I believe that having an ethical standards guide will help me to be the best counselor that I can be because I will have a set of rules that I can always refer to.

I will make sure that all of my students feel comfortable enough to express their feelings to their counselor and to know that my office is a safe place.

From my competency test results, I was slightly surprised because I but yet disappointed. The more I take counseling courses the closer I see myself getting to being an actual professional. On this assessment, I scored pretty low in most categories, but this just means that I need to focus more on my awareness.

American School Counseling Association (2019).
