According to Kyilah Terry (2021), The European Union and Turkey reached a historic deal in March 2016 to restrict the number of asylum seekers who may enter EU territory. Thousands of migrants had travelled through Turkey to get there. Turkey has historically been a hub for transcontinental migration as a gateway between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Its location also makes it a preferred route for migrants wishing to access Europe.

-Turkey shares borders with countries experiencing significant conflict and instability, such as Syria and Iraq. This proximity has led to large numbers of refugees, particularly from Syria, seeking asylum in Turkey.

Click here for a more detailed look on our lovely country.

The main cause of Turkey's migration confusion is the massive flood of migrants and refugees, particularly from Syria where a civil war broke out in 2011. Turkey is home to more than 3.6 million Syrian refugees, as well as migrants from Afghanistan, Iraq, and other nations. It is the country with the highest number of refugees worldwide. This has put a pressure on the infrastructure and resources of the nation, posing social, economic, and political difficulties. Tensions over financial aid and border control with the European Union, as well as internal discussions about integration and its effects on local communities, all contribute to the problem.

Turkey's geopolitical location as a link between Europe and Asia has a major impact on its immigration policies. The nation leverages political and economic discussions, particularly those with the European Union, by using its position as a major transit destination for migrants and refugees. In exchange for financial assistance and political concessions, Turkey regulates the flow of migrants into Europe under agreements with the EU, such as the 2016 EU-Turkey accord. In its domestic arena, Turkey strikes a balance between humanitarian obligations and worries about national security while enacting temporary protection measures for refugees, especially Syrians. Turkey's geopolitical policy is to gain favorable terms in international dealings while strengthening its regional influence.

The Turkish city with the highest number of refugees is Istanbul. Istanbul, the nation's largest metropolis, among others draws an enormous number of refugees because of its resources and economic prospects. A significant percentage of Turkey's population of over 3.6 million Syrian refugees lives there, along with other migrants from other nations. Due to its ability to offer assistance, employment opportunities, and support, the city is a top choice for many people fleeing danger.

The foundation of voluntary migration is the idea that the person making the migration is doing so of their own want. These people are free to migrate whenever they choose and are not reliant on outside migration. When people migrate voluntarily, it's because they want to fulfill certain personal goals, like traveling to new areas, becoming more prosperous, or securing their future. Forced migration occurs as a result of the influence and coercion of various forces, such as terror, bloodshed, human rights violations, population oppression, religious and political oppression. It is migration that occurs out of the will of individuals and drives them to seek a more secure places.
