This temple is proof of Buddhism adapting to local cultures as it spreads along the Silk Road. Buddhism was originally founded in India, so the merchants and travelers using the Silk Road used the route to spread the religion. The temple was commissioned by King Suryavarman and was dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Twenty-seven years after the king's death, Angkor was sacked by the Chams, the enemies of the Khmer. The change in the cultural significance of the temple is evidence of Buddhism adapting to the local culture. The temple is one of the best examples of Khmer architecture, and because it is in Cambodia, Angkor Wat is a major symbol of Cambodia.

Facts:

1. This temple is the largest religious monument in the world

2. Angkor Wat was originally a Hindu temple. It was first dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu before gradually transforming into a Buddhist temple, which it remains today.

Another reason the temple is an example of Buddhism adapting to the local cultures along the Silk Road is how originally built Indian stupas, when they were destroyed, turned into Chinese Pagodas in the temple.

-The White Horse Temple is considered by many to be the 'Cradle of Chinese Buddhism'.

-According to local tradition, the temple is the first Buddhist temple to be built in China.
