Georgia: all start from me and my passion

Today we talked about how to plan and organize a KA2 project. The most important is our personal motivations. All start from what I really like and what is my passion. Then I have to create the project’s activities. At this moment it’s very important to inspire and involve all teachers of the school to share their ideas of what kind of activities they can deliver during their lessons. This part is very crucial because the involvement of as many teachers as possible will help the project to be part of the whole school.
As it concerns the partners for the KA2 project platforms like etwinning can help us decide which will be finally our partners.
Also we have to keep in mind to plan one activity every month. It’s a good idea all partners have the same activity to deliver so as to be a collaborative work. We should also have in mind the dissemination of our work. After every mobility we should have in mind to organize activities to inform and involve the whole school, local community to our project.

Today we had our second last class in Rita's classroom. I am starting to realize that I am going to miss this classroom with a door to the world in Belgium (unfortunately we don't have similar classrooms there).
It was a busy day today with both our international policy presentation and our teaching assignment on îlet Caret. I had the impression that both tasks were positively received by the group. The assignment I set up on learning a foreign language I would also like to try out at school. Georgia also gave a nice suggestion to work on the social and civic competences; I will also put this into practice in Belgium.
I also found the article about the ideas concerning international activities very interesting: writing one and the same fairy tale in different languages or working out a song festival seemed like very nice ideas to work with.
The emphasis on what to pay attention to when applying for your application within Erasmus+ I personally found less interesting. This is due to the fact that this is done by our school community and we have no work to do at that level.
What I will especially remember from today's session is the fact that everything starts and ends with your own passion. This arises from your own identity development. Only when you are passionate about something you can allow it to flourish (for yourself, your students and your colleagues). Something I also experienced myself with my exchange in Brussels. Afterwards, I had so much satisfaction from seeing my students enjoy the language and each other so much. I also think it is important not to lose sight of the game element in exchanges as well as in teaching. When we talk about passion, we also talk about the fire in our eyes. Hence my quote "l'encre de tes yeux" by Francis Cabrel, a song that crossed my path on the boat trip and managed to touch me in that moment. I have written home several times that I am short of eyes here: there are so many new impressions that affect me (in terms of music, nature, food, language, ...). Today, the road signs on the way to Pointe des Châteaux / pwenndéchato caught my eye: the remarkable phonetic spelling of the Creole language caught my attention and made me smile because of the cleverness of this remarkable language.

Today, we presented to each other the various assignments that we came up with during yesterday's boat trip, with which we tried to support the development of one of the key competences.

First of all, the diversity in the assignments was remarkable. We noticed that our different backgrounds had an impact on the assignments we had designed and prepared.

In the second place, we pointed out the importance of action. 'Sport' is not part of the 8 key competences, because it is assumed that it is integrated everywhere. Research shows that a person can only stay concentrated for 20 minutes. By including active and competitive moments, we can keep them stimulated and keep their attention on the subject. I found Georgia's assignment in this area very interesting. She suggested starting with a class discussion about the glass that can be found on L'îlet Caret and asking the pupils about their commitment to nature and whether they have already taken any actions to clean up rubbish. Afterwards, she would have them debate, while standing, about how the island should be developed. Are they in favour of preserving and supporting nature or would they build a beach bar on the island? One pupil will be the judge during the debate and the others choose one of the two camps. The pupils put their heads together to find as many good arguments as possible. Then the debate starts. In turn, a pupil from each team takes a step forward to state or to refute an argument. The judge leads the debate and will decide in the end who has won. I found this an interesting and universal concept. Depending on the subject, it can be used with many students. I will keep it in mind for my language courses.

We also stressed the importance of giving responsibility to pupils. When we go out, we as teachers often have the reflex to do a lot ourselves and keep control, which makes it quite a task or challenge. By giving each pupil a certain responsibility and making them think about the things they could be responsible for, we involve them in the organisation, they will understand the arrangements better and we lighten the work for ourselves.

Finally, we also emphasised the fact that undertaking a project takes time. Both for choosing a project and for working out the projects you need to allow enough time. Ideally, it should take two years. A first year in which you can approach a school from another country, make concrete agreements and apply for a scholarship. Approaching a school could be done through E-twinning for example. You can post messages on the forum and sound out schools that also want to work on a particular theme. By agreeing with the schools that you will post a short update on the forum every month, e.g. about the school, the city, the country etc., you can check to what extent they are also motivated to start an international project. It is important to choose a school / schools with which there is a match and click. This approach also ensures that the different parties already know each other in the year of the exchange and that there is no need to spend more time there.

Note to self: in the shops I came across two interesting stories that I could use during my French lessons:
- Histoire des îles de Guadeloupe - G. Richard et O. Brazao
- Le négropolitain - Jacqueline et Philippe Déléphine
Through these stories, I could share my Guadeloupean experiences with the students and teach them about the distinctive cultural and linguistic diversity of the island. I think it would be interesting to buy them as e-books so I can check the content and the level of these stories.
