The Ecuadorian National Curriculum is a important document for the Ecuadorian education, and the advantages of this document is the use of projects, which works in the development of creativity in the students, the students work in groups, and the collaborative work increased in them, and the result is that we will have a new generation of people with good skills of investigation, creativity, they can work or study in groups without problems.

However, this document has some problems, and one of those problems and what I personally consider is the biggest one, is the way in how the foreing language is divided in the schools, it is supposed that every student has a B1 level when they graduated from school, but the reality is that they have a lower level, a really basic level, and the disadvantage of the curriculum is that they put the students of different levels in a same group, and it cause a learning delay in the foreing language level, or they will get bored of the class because they will have a class of topic that they already knows, and so many problems that have the curriculum.

The Ecuadorian curriculum is developed for students whose mother tongue is not English. it has some positive features that benefit students in their EFL classes, for example, it has a focus on different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In addition to recognizing authentic, culturally relevant production of information to facilitate understanding.
On the other hand, it has been verified that many of the proposed objectives cannot be met due to various factors such as the infrastructure of educational centers in poor condition, which do not allow activities to be carried out optimally. In addition, it is known that Ecuador has a low level of English language proficiency, so teachers have had to use L1 for the development of classes, which can cause confusion for students. Also, the lack of materials such as projectors, computers or even a fan, can cause difficulties during the teaching process. Another factor is the lack of teacher training that does not allow them to adapt to what the curriculum dictates, having to adapt it to the environment and to what is available to them.

The Ecuadorian national curriculum in practice presents various strengths and advantages that positively impact student learning and development. A notable benefit is its commitment to providing a comprehensive education that covers a wide range of subjects such as mathematics, sciences, social sciences, languages, and arts. This approach equips students with a diverse set of skills and knowledge, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Moreover, the curriculum places a strong emphasis on inclusive education, aiming to provide equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their background or abilities. By accommodating diverse learning needs and styles, the curriculum promotes an inclusive classroom environment that encourages collaboration and respect among students.

However, the implementation of the Ecuadorian national curriculum also faces challenges and drawbacks. One particular obstacle is the potential overcrowding of curriculum content, which may lead to a rushed and superficial approach to teaching and learning. With a broad range of subjects to cover, teachers may find it challenging to delve deeply into each topic, hindering the development of critical thinking and analytical skills. To address this issue, clear guidelines and priorities should be provided to help teachers focus on essential knowledge and skills. Additionally, the curriculum's effectiveness may vary across regions and schools, resulting in inconsistent educational experiences. Factors such as resource availability, teacher training, and infrastructure can significantly impact the quality of education students receive. To ensure equitable access to a high-quality education, efforts should be made to address these disparities and provide necessary support to schools in rural or economically disadvantaged areas.

Advantages of Ecuadorian Curriculum

The Ecuadorian curriculum places significant emphasis on English teaching, offering a multitude of advantages and strengths that greatly contribute to students' learning and development in this area. One key benefit is the early introduction of English language instruction, starting from primary school. This early exposure to English fosters linguistic flexibility and enhances cognitive development, allowing students to acquire language skills more efficiently. The curriculum also emphasizes the development of all language competencies, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Through a well-designed curriculum, students engage in diverse activities such as group discussions, debates, presentations, and writing exercises, which promote effective communication and language fluency. Furthermore, the curriculum integrates authentic materials, such as literature, news articles, and multimedia resources, enabling students to broaden their cultural understanding while improving their language proficiency. Additionally, the curriculum encourages interactive and communicative teaching methods, such as role-plays, simulations, and language games, which make the learning process engaging and enjoyable. By providing a balanced focus on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and practical language use, the Ecuadorian curriculum equips students with the necessary skills to communicate effectively in English, empowering them for future academic and professional pursuits.
____________________________________________
Disadvantage of Ecuadorian curriculum

The Ecuadorian curriculum in English teaching presents several challenges and drawbacks that teachers may encounter. One significant drawback is the limited availability of resources and materials specifically designed for English language instruction. Teachers may face difficulties in accessing up-to-date textbooks, supplementary materials, and technological resources that align with the curriculum's objectives. This lack of resources can impede teachers' ability to provide diverse and engaging lessons that cater to different learning styles and preferences. . Furthermore, the large class sizes commonly found in Ecuadorian schools can pose a challenge for teachers in providing individualized attention and feedback to each student. With limited time and resources, it becomes demanding for teachers to address the unique learning needs of each student and offer personalized support. Additionally, due to limited professional development opportunities and support, teachers may struggle to keep up with the latest teaching methodologies and approaches in English language instruction. This can hinder their ability to employ innovative and effective strategies in the classroom. To mitigate these challenges, it is essential to invest in professional development programs, provide teachers with adequate resources, and promote collaboration among educators to share best practices and overcome the drawbacks associated with the Ecuadorian curriculum in English teaching.

One advantage of the national curriculum is that it provides a standardized education system that ensures all students receive the same quality of education. This helps to promote equity in education and reduce disparities between schools in different regions. For example, the Ministry of Education has implemented a program called "Todos ABC" which aims to provide all children with access to quality education, regardless of their socioeconomic background or geographic location. This program has resulted in increased enrollment rates and improved academic performance in rural areas.

However, one disadvantage of the national curriculum is that it can be too rigid and does not allow for individualized learning or cater to different learning styles. This can lead to a lack of engagement among some students and limit their potential for academic success. For example, some students may struggle with traditional classroom instruction and benefit from more hands-on, experiential learning opportunities. Additionally, there is a lack of flexibility in the curriculum with regard to incorporating new technologies and teaching methods that may better serve students' needs. As such, there are calls for greater flexibility in the national curriculum to allow for more personalized learning experiences.

The curriculum serves as a guide for teachers, allowing them to follow a series of steps and actions in order to achieve learning goals. In addition, the well-organized curriculum incorporates current approaches and teaching methods to teach English as a foreign language more effectively. On the other hand, it also includes standards and practices for teaching students with special needs, thus providing inclusion in the educational environment.

On the other hand, the implementation of the curriculum can have its complications. Many teachers claim that it is somewhat complex to understand and that not everyone has received adequate training to understand how it works and its application in the classroom. Also, the activities contained in the curriculum are not always fully supported by the authorities or the institutions lack the necessary technological resources to develop the proposed activities. Finally, the same advantage of inclusion mentioned above becomes a problem for teachers who are not prepared to teach students with special needs, so they mention that it is complex to design a planning in which all students are included as one.

One of the advantages of the Ecuadorian Curriculum on the teaching of the English language is that it has interactive activities, focused on the development of the language through different current methods, which is excellent, since as time progresses many theories and methods arise on the teaching a second language, these can evolve, transform to achieve the educational objective. Besides, The activities that are within the Ecuadorian Curriculum of education are based on the development of speech, of effective communication, rather than the development of content such as grammar.

On the other hand, in disadvantages we can have that the Ecuadorian education curriculum is not up to par with the level of the students, therefore, it can be difficult for teachers to follow it to the letter. For this reason, teachers try to change it so that it is consistent with the level of the students. Another disadvantage is the lack of financing or technological equipment to carry out the activities required in the curriculum and this also demands that teachers be trained to handle technological equipment and adapt to new learning strategies, which is complicated, since many teachers do not feel safe with this change and seek to stay in traditional teaching.

The Ecuadorian national curriculum brings several advantages and strengths to the education system and student learning and development. Firstly the most important strength of the Ecuadorian national curriculum is its emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The curriculum encourages students to think critically, analyze information, and solve complex problems. This helps students develop their cognitive abilities and prepares them for higher education and the workforce. Additionally, the curriculum incorporates hands-on learning experiences and practical applications, which further enhance student engagement and understanding of the subjects.

While the Ecuadorian national curriculum has several strengths, it also faces certain challenges and drawbacks. One major challenge is the lack of sufficient resources and infrastructure to support the implementation of the curriculum effectively. Many schools, especially in rural and underprivileged areas, struggle to provide the necessary materials, technology, and qualified teachers to deliver the curriculum as intended. This can limit the quality of education students receive and hinder their overall development. Another challenge of the Ecuadorian national curriculum is its standardized nature. The curriculum is designed to be uniform across the country, which may not take into account the unique needs and strengths of individual students. Some students may excel in certain areas or have different learning styles, but the curriculum may not adequately cater to their needs. This can result in a one-size-fits-all approach that may not fully optimize student learning and development. Additionally, the standardized nature of the curriculum can lead to a focus on memorization rather than deeper understanding and critical thinking skills.

The Ecuadorian national EFL curriculum have the follow advantages: It establishes epistemological foundations, pedagogical methodologies, and a coding system to design micro- curricular planning. This curriculum is also meant to be applied to all public schools. It also presents a framework for English learning based on global engagement, social and thinking skills, and the foundation of lifelong learning. A last advantage is that The Ecuadorian national curriculum proposes five core principles. The first one is the learner-centered approach. For example: The students need to be focused on share responsibilities for activities and tasks, this is widely used in language teaching. The second is communicative language teaching. For example: Students do a lot expositions to achieve fluency in speaking. The third principle is related to the Common European Framework of References, Ecuadorian EFL students must achieve the CEFR Level B1 by the end of secondary school in terms of language competence. Regarding the fourth core principle, the curriculum establishes the importance of developing thinking, social and creative skills to support learning English for lifelong learning. For example: Students are able to communicate without problems in real life conversations.

Finally, the fifth principle is based on the CLIL approach to help students improve their overall competence in the target language.

Now the Ecuadorian national EFL curriculum also have disadvantages which are the follow:

There are factor that affect EFL and ELT related to pedagogy, these are planning and teaching lessons according to the mandated Ecuadorian curriculum. Many said that it’s very difficult to plan and implement in their classrooms because they hadn’t been trained in the pedagogical areas mentioned in the curriculum and aren’t given enough time to plan. The lack of contextualization of the curriculum and the complex code-based planning process were the main barriers that Ecuadorian English teachers found difficult to apply in their classrooms. Many teachers mentioned that when they did try and do English clubs or extra activities to promote English language learning the authorities of their school did not support them and in the end, they could not complete the activities they would plan.

A last disadvantage is that there is a disconnect from the English language curriculum and policy and the actual classroom reality. This finding may be a main reason that English language competency may be low throughout the country.

The Ecuadorian curriculum sets out its educational model. Within this framework, it is worth mentioning that in Ecuador the curriculum is aimed at promoting the development and socialization of the new generations of Ecuadorians. We can say that the curriculum embodies coherence not only in terms of wording, since it is evident that it is framed in a contextual, social, political and pedagogical plane, which ensures the educational processes for early childhood. One of the benefits of the Ecuadorian curriculum is that it is very useful to be able to order for teachers as it helps to maximize the learning process of each of the students.

One of the disadvantages that I could find is that there are not enough resources in a classroom as this is a good sign to improve student learning, a good example of this would be the lack of computers in an English lab, this is important because students can work on their own and so they can be evaluated individually.

The Ecuadorian national curriculum offers us many benefits and strengths in student learning. Firstly, it highlights the alignment between teachers' beliefs and the curriculum, ensuring a cohesive and effective educational experience. In addition, the findings found in these works emphasize the positive impact of the curricular reform in improving language proficiency, critical thinking skills and intercultural competence among students, fostering the integral growth of students and preparing them for the challenges of a globalized world as it provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges they face in English language education, enabling them to develop a critical awareness of issues and devise effective strategies to overcome them. In addition, the curriculum encourages students to engage in reflective practice, allowing them to analyze their own teaching approaches and adapt them to meet the diverse needs of learners. Through this process, students cultivate a deeper understanding of pedagogical principles and enhance their ability to create inclusive and effective learning environments. Overall, the curriculum fosters a proactive and informed approach to teaching the English language, empowering students to contribute to positive change in Ecuador's public schools and promote better language education for all students.

But at the same time, the curriculum also present several challenges. The first of these is the mismatch between teachers' beliefs and the national curriculum reform as many teachers hold deeply held beliefs and practices that are not fully addressed or supported by the reformed curriculum, leading to inconsistency and implementation difficulties. In addition, curriculum reform often focuses on rote learning such as memorizing grammar rules, vocabulary, and test preparation rather than promoting critical thinking and communication skills, hindering the development students' general language skills, causing them to present a great lack of emphasis on practical language skills and effective communication, such as having fluent conversations in real life. Another challenge is the lack of adequate training and professional development opportunities for teachers to understand and effectively implement the new curriculum exacerbates these challenges, as insufficient resources, including outdated textbooks and limited access to technology, further impede effective language teaching. Additionally, the large class sizes prevalent in public schools make it difficult for teachers to provide individual attention and personalized instruction to students. Finally, if these drawbacks and challenges could be addressed it would be a great help to improve English language teaching and foster a more communicative and student-centered approach in Ecuadorian education.

Some of the advantages of the Ecuadorian National Curriculum is that professional development activities are designed so that teachers have ample opportunities for experiential learning and addressing curricular change and reflective practice. Another benefit, is that with the change of the curriculum came up to date methodologies, strategies and various types of technology to promote English language learning throughout the country. The methodologies discussed in Currículo lengua extranjera (2016) include content and language integrated learning (CLIL), communicative language teaching (CLT) and the use of technology for educational purposes, which support and aid in EFL learning. The curriculum defines clear learning outcomes for English language learners, specifying the knowledge, skills, and competencies they should develop at each educational level. This clarity can guide teachers in designing their lessons and assessing student progress

The teaching reality within the limited resources is a disadvantage of the Ecuadorian curriculum. For example, public schools only have internet connection in the administrative offices and some students do not have cell phones, which hinders using ICT in the class. Also, the teachers faced several challenge in putting the planned curriculum into action due to different contextual and practical limitations. These factors are large class size, a lack of teacher training and professional development, an the heavy caused by compulsory extra-curriculum activities. Another major pedagogical disadvantage mentioned by the teachers is the mandated law that all students must be included in the regular classroom. This was explained that in almost every class there is one or more special needs student included in the general population and it is the teachers’ job to create materials for them, plan activities and use methodology that includes these students.

Another disadvantage is that the books only focus on reading and writing activities, which not allow students to develop communicative skills. One of them is the arts, being one of the most relevant and interesting threads as it helps the creativity of the students' minds and makes learning entertaining. The Ecuadorian national curriculum allows for innovation in teaching methods and approaches. The learned-centered approach helps in the responsibility for tasks and activities in the students. CLIL is one of the most important approaches, as it improves their overall competence in the target language.

Second, we will discuss the different disadvantages in the Ecuadorian national curriculum. The lack of training of the professionals is one of the main disadvantages since it can be seen that they do not have control of the language and therefore cannot teach it in a good way and causes demotivation in the students. Another thing that causes demotivation is the excessive extracurricular activities, it is known that in order to learn you must review, but that is not always the way. And talking about physical things we can talk about the infrastructure, the scarcity of technological resources and large class size. There are more disadvantages than advantages, which it is hoped that the curriculum will improve for the good of Ecuadorian education.
