From the source, I can infer that the reason why Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya was because it would improve Singapore's economy. This can be inferred from the evidences "A common market would allow Singapore to sell goods at a lower price and become more competitive, and thus there would be more economic growth" and "At that time, Singapore was lacking in technology and had no technology in any fields; industrialization was therefore difficult as there were no skilled labourers". There evidences show that with the merger, the two nations would be sharing a common market. With this common market, Singapore would then be able to directly engage Malaysia in trade and also be able to increase its profit as it exchanges goods. The second evidence then shows that with the merger, Malaya would be able to supply the necessary materials and resources to industrialize Singapore which ultimately lead to a boost in their economy. Therefore, I can infer that with the merger of Singapore and Malaysia, Singapore will stand to improve its economy.
From the source, I can also infer that with the merger, Singapore will also stand to be protected by Malaya. This can be inferred from the evidences "Furthermore, Singapore is a tiny state surrounded by larger countries, thus the risk of an invasion by neighbouring countries was great." and "The merger would therefore be able to provide protection in order to deter potential invaders, all in the name of the interests of Singapore's National Security." The first evidence states how Singapore at that point in time was vulnerable to fall prey to the neighbouring countries, especially to the threat of communism, this then supports the second evidence which shows how with this merger, Singapore would ultimately be protected by Malaya in such a crisis. Furthermore, since Malaya is situated not far from Singapore, it would be able to provide the necessary equipment and manpower to protect Singapore. Therefore, Singapore would stand to gain protection from Malaya through the merger.
The author of the article is a contributor on the "The Knowledge Cafeteria". The audience of the article is the general public. The aim of the article is to explain the what Singapore stood to gain from the merger with Malaya. The anticipated reaction after reading the article is to understand the reason behind the merger and gain new knowledge. The action that the audience will take is to vote for the merger and support the merger.

From the source I can infer that one of the reasons which Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya is to break free from the British.
The evidence is " the British were unwilling to relinquish self-governance to Singapore since that Singapore did not have a capable leader who would be able to lead the country out of the crisis. Therefore, the British agreed that if Singapore merged with Malaya , they would give Singapore self-governance as Malaya would be able to provide the necessary leadership to lead Singapore out from its crisis."
This is shown as without the merger the British refused to give Singapore self-governance.Only under the guidance of Malaya during the merger,a strong power with good leaders and many resources, would the British allow Singapore to obtain self-governance as Malaya would help guard Singapore against other threats as it matured assuring the British that Singapore would be able to prosper and survive. Thus, Singapore wanted the merger in order to obtain self-governance.
From the source I also can infer that Singapore wanted the merger in order to stand against the communists
The evidence is " Malaysia being an anti-communist would have the funds and equipment to get rid of the communist"
The merger would then make Singapore more resilient towards communism as Malaysia would step in with its resources and equipment, to prevent Singapore from falling prey to it.Thus the merger would help Singapore stand against the communists

Firstly, it was because Singapore wanted self governance.

The evidence is " From Singapore's point of view, through the merger, it stood to gain its long sought self governance," and "The British agreed that if Singapore merged with Malaya, they would give Singapore self governance."
Thus, i can infer that it was because Singapore wanted self governance that they chose the merger. The British would only grant them this privilege if they merged with a larger, self- sufficient country Malaya. Singapore at that time was unstable and politically weak, not proving to the British that they could independently rule them elves. And thus the merger, so that the British would be convinced that Malaya could guide and look after Singapore into success.
Secondly, i can infer that Singapore merged for the sake of better security.
The evidence is " Singapore through the merger also stood to gain protection," and "Singapore was pretty much underdeveloped and needed a good army to defend herself from possible threats like the Communists."
Therefore i can infer that Singapore was still in its growing stages, without the decent defences and security that all countries required. it needed to merge with a strong, fully developed and civilised state Malaya and gain the essential forms of defence as well as civil protection that it was so deprived of. The communists were proved as the gravest of threats at the time, and vulnerable, defenceless Singapore all the more needed the merger to gain strength, lest it fall into the throes of Communism.

The author is a Writer who is a pro-merger. The audience is the Singaporean people.

From the source, I can tell that when Singapore merges with Malaya, Singapore could have a better economy.
The evidences are "Malaysia wold provide hinterland and natural Resources that can power Singapore's industrialisation" and "Malaysia would be a market that would buy in the products and allow economic growth for Singapore".
When Malaya provides Singapore with the resources to industrialise, Singapore can increase economically when the goods produced in factories are sold. When these goods are produced, Malaya will also buy them but at a cheaper rate. Since, Malaya will guarantee its trade with Singapore, there will be a definite profit made, thus allowing Singapore to have a better economy.

From the source, I can also tell that Singapore will have a better protection when Singapore merges with Malaya. The evidence is "The merger would therefore be able to provide protection in order to deter potential invaders, all in the name of the interests of Singapore's National Security". Singapore was unstable and lacked a strong defence against potential attacks from other larger countries such as the communists. If there would be such attacks, Malaya would be able to provide all the support for Singapore such as men and weapons to defend against the invaders. The fact that communist countries know that Malaya would protect Singapore would fend off these countries from invading Singapore. Thus, with the merger between Singapore and Malaya will better protect Singapore from potential attacks.

The author of the source is a historian. The audience of the source would be Singaporeans and the general public. The aim is to convey the benefits and how Singapore can be successful through the merger with Malaya. The anticipated reaction is that Singaporeans will feel that the merger would generally help Singapore in a good way and help Singapore succeed. The action of the audiences is to vote for the merger and support it.

Why did Singapore merge with Malaya?

From the source, I can infer that Singapore wanted to merge with Malaysia to gain the self-governance that the British did not want to Singapore to have. This is supported by “From Singapore’s point of view, through the merger, it stood to gain its long sought self-governance since the British were unwilling to relinquish self-governance to Singapore since they felt that Singapore did not have a capable leader who would be able to lead the country out of the crisis.” Singapore wanted self-governance but the British were opposed to Singapore having self-governance. The British felt that Singapore had no leaders that were proficient in leading Singapore and to ensure that Singapore does not fall into Communism. If Singapore merged with Malaya, Singapore would have self-governance as Malaya would have the quintessential leadership to ensure that Singapore needed to drive out Communism. Therefore, Singapore would gain the self-governance that they sought for but they would also have the leadership from Malaya to prevent Communism.

From the source, I can also infer that Singapore merged with Malaya to gain the required protection from danger. This is supported by “Singapore through the merger stood to gain protection.” Singapore was a small, vulnerable and underdeveloped country. Singapore needed a good army to defend herself from attacks like the Communist and by merging with Malaya, they would receive the needed protection. Singapore was a small state but it was surrounded by much larger countries. When Singapore merges with Malaya, it made them a larger country rather that is able to prevent invasion rather than a small state with barely any protection. By merging with Malaya, Singapore would no longer be defenceless and would be protected from attacks. Therefore, Singapore would gain the protection they required by merging with Malaya.

The author is the Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew. The audience is the general public in Singapore. The aim of the source is to convince the public of the need to merge with Malaya to ensure the sustenance and success of Singapore. The anticipated reaction is that the audience will understand the reasons for the need to merge with Malaya and support the merge. The action after understanding is to vote for the merger.

From the source, I can infer that Singapore wanted to attain absolute independence from the British. "From Singapore's point of view, through the merger, it stood to gain its long sought self-governance since the British were unwilling to relinquish self-governance to Singapore." tells me so. This is because the British fear that Singapore might either fall in economy or fall to communism due to the high number of Chinese. With the merger, Singapore will be able to avoid the idea of communism and work its way towards democracy.

From the source, I can infer that the reason Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya was the economic growth which is essential for Singapore. This is supported by "A common market would allow Singapore to sell the goods at a lower price and become more competitive, and thus there would be more economic growth.". From the evidence, I can infer that Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya to create a common market for them to sell goods at a lower price which will make them more competitive and in turn lead to an economic growth for them.

From the source I can also infer that Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya to attain self-governance, freeing herself from the British. This is supported by "From Singapore's point of view, through the merger, it stood to gain its long sought self-governance since the British were unwilling to relinquish self-governance to Singapore since they felt that Singapore did not have a capable leader who would be able to to lead the country out of the crisis.". From the evidence, I can infer that the British thought that Singapore could not attain self-governance on its own, thus requiring a suitable leader like Malaya to lead Singapore. Thus, the merge with Malaya was crucial in order for the British to be assured that Singapore would not fall prey to communism with Malaya's protection. Therefore, Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya to attain self-governance.

The author of the source is a writer. The evidence shows that with a common market for Singapore to import and export goods and materials, they would be able to profit by selling goods to Malaya.

From the source, I can infer that Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya to benefit as a nation. It would have stronger security as Malaya could provide manpower and defence for Singapore, especially from her neighbouring countries who could easily invade and take over her, as supported by "Singapore through the merger also stood to gain protection. Singapore was pretty much undeveloped and needed a good army to defend herself from possible threats of attack like the communists." Thus, the stronger security was crucial to ensure that an invasion does not occur, and communists do not run Singapore. I can also infer that Singapore wanted to gain self-governance through the merger. This is supported by "It stood to gain it's long sought self-governance since the British were unwilling to relinquish self-governance to Singapore since they felt that Singapore did not have a capable leader who would be able to lead the country out of the crisis". Self-governance was important for Singapore because a leader was required to lead the people and nation to prosperity. Lastly, from the source, I can infer that Singapore wanted to have a common market with Malaysia which would boost both countries' economy, making it a win-win situation. Singapore lacked certain factors to help them prosper in the market alone as supported by "Singapore was trying to industrialise, but no resources or market", and "Singapore was lacking in technology and had no technology in any fields." Thus, a common market would provide Singapore with resources she lacked, helping her produce in the market and become economically stronger. Hence, from this source, I can conclude that Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya to benefit in terms of security, economy and leadership.

Question: From the source, why did Singapore want to merge with Malaya?

Inference 1:
From the source, I can infer that Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya as it will be able to have self-governance.

This is supported by "Therefore, the British agreed that if Singapore merged with Malaya, they would give Singapore self-governance as Malaya would be able to provide the necessary leadership to lead Singapore out from its crisis".

The PAP, Singapore's leading political party, had little experience settling national issues. Furthermore, Singapore back then was in a very dire state, many people were jobless due to the lack of jobs, people were poor and Singapore was underdeveloped. Due to all the current issues Singapore was facing, the British felt that Singapore alone will not be able to resolve its issues and grow as a country. As such, the British only agreed to give Singapore self-governance if it merged with Malaya so that Malaya can lead Singapore in the right path towards recovery.

Thus, Singapore merging with Malaya will let Singapore have a leader, Malaya, that they can ask for advice, the merger will also satisfy the British so that they will not go against Singapore's wish for self-governance, and lastly, Singapore will be able to attain self-governance and later, independence, which they have wanted for a long time.

With all these benefits, Singapore thus wanted to merge with Malaya so that it can gain self-governance.

Inference 2:
From the source, I can infer that Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya so that it can receive protection from Malaya and prevent any attacks which can destroy Singapore's internal security.

This is supported by "Singapore is a tiny state surrounded by larger countries, thus the risk of an invasion by neighbouring countries was great. The merger would therefore be able to provide protection in order to deter potential invaders, all in the name of the interests of Singapore's National Security."

Singapore has a very small land size compared to its neighbouring countries, this means that neighbouring countries may have a larger population size, more resources and more talent than Singapore. This makes an attack on Singapore very likely. With Malaya, Singapore will be able to to receive protection and security from a power that has resources, manpower and a strong army.

Thus, Singapore wanted to merge with Malaya so that its security will be safeguarded and neighbouring countries will be less likely to attack Singapore, giving Singapore much-needed protection.
