When I was eight years old, my mother had me join soccer. I had hated the sport for the first few months I had played and just barely participated in anything we did. Then suddenly I fell in love with the sport. I realized just how fun it was. Then it came to my attention I was the worst player on the team, and this made me want to get better. I quickly became the hardest worker on the team. I always ran the hardest, challenges the quickest, and just always gave my best. This led to me becoming the best player on my team in only a measly two or three years. Once I reached this achievement, the sport became even more fun and enjoyable.

How does this relate to my theme?

When I began to work hard and get better, soccer became more fun. I had something to be proud of and felt confident in my abilities.

In third grade, I was a bad student. I gave no effort into my schoolwork and hated school in general. That all changed that year though. My teacher, Mrs. Bailey, was a great teacher. She helped me gain an interest in school and learning. She showed me interesting books to read, gave me interesting projects to work on, and always had my attention. This sparked my will to work in school. I wanted to do good on these assignments now and prove that I learned and was growing smarter. After third grade, school became a breeze and was fun. Everyday I worked on the homework as soon as possible, finished it as soon as possible, and had free time to myself. I began enjoying myself at school, becoming friends with more kids and even teachers. I really enjoyed working hard and learning more once I became motivated to work hard.

How does this relate to my personal theme?

Once I began to work harder, I also began to have a better time. I obtained a reason and will to work, so work became easier because it became less of a chore. Then once work became easier, then I had more time to hang out and have fun.

At the age of eight years old, I gained a new family member. He was to replace my father who had left me at an early age. When he first came into my life I was confused about how to feel. He was nice to me, but some things he did, like his rules and expectations, were different than my moms who had always been the only real parental figure to me. I was distant with him and always treated him like a ghost who was there, but I did not really acknowledge him. I wanted a relationship, but didn't know how to build one. Then he proved that he could be the father figure my dad wasn't by doing the things I had always wanted, like playing games together, or helping me with homework, like a normal parent. This made me want to put effort into our relationship. After that point, at every chance I got I would try to find a way to hang out and bond with him and have a good time. Now, we have a great relationship, and I am much more comfortable with him and I now have my father figure I didn't for half my life.

How does this relate to my theme?

Instead of never trying to give him a chance, I gave him a chance. I wanted to have a relationship with him, so once he showed me he wanted that too, I immediately rushed to give all that I could into a good and healthy relationship, and now I am better off then when he wasn't in my life. He has taught me a lot in my life and has helped me and my mother tremendously, and I couldn't be happier.
