No one knew how to cook the rice. We didn't know anything about Greens till a week after the boys were getting scabies. What they used at first was hibiscus leaves,a common plant in Singapore. When we first started eating it raw,we burnt our mouths with that sticky stuff. So we cooked it for five minutes and mixed it with rice.

Written Source
During the Japanese Occupation
Source is from Changi War Museum
The aspect revealed is Food

This shows that the teenagers' lives were tough had to adapt in order to survive. They had to use whatever edible things that can have their hands on and use it into their rice to make it taste better.

The evidence is in "So we cooked it for five minutes and mixed it with rice".

Although food was scarce, somehow or other,we could survive on things that we could lay our hands on. In order to survive, you try to make use of every part of the fruit you ate.For instance, even the skin from a Cempedak can be eaten. The seed, which is hard, can be boiled until it becomes soft and edible. You can even eat the shells of groundnuts.

Written Source
During the Japanese Occupation
Source is from Textbook page 39
The aspect revealed is Food

This shows that during the Japanese Occupation had to be creative and find out ways on how they won't have to be hungry and make use of the entire fruit that they were eating.

The evidence is in "In order to survive, you try to make use of every part of the fruit you ate."

The food that was eaten during the Japanese Occupation were not as tasty as the foods we have today.Food was also scarce during the Japanese Occupation and that in order to survive the Teenagers had to make use of whatever they are eating, like a Fruit for example, they had to boil the seeds till it is soft and then eat it so that they will not go hungry. The POWs and Teenagers that were placed in prison also had very very little food which made them very skinny.Cheap oils were also used like Palm oils and cooking with Palm oils were difficult too as after cooking the food,U will need to wash them with hot water to get rid of the oil and the food that was cooked in the palm oil did not taste good at all.The teenagers also had to adapt and be creative with the foods they wanted to cook so that it would taste better and more filling.
