Church or Vaccination centre?

Nestled in some of the largest and most breath-taking faith venues across Britain is the collaborative effort of Ministers and medical professionals. As demonstrated above, vaccinations are taking place in faith centres across the country, including Salisbury Cathedral. The joining of sacred space and modern medicine reintroduces the caring and guiding hand of the Church in amongst our communities. In addition, Ministers are reflecting on the vaccination of individuals as an extension of real life mission. Papadopulous demonstrates this position in his statement that at Salisbury Cathedral "we proclaim a faith which is grounded in the experience of real life and in real life plagues happen...I have been praying that we might learn from this experience about what really matters," a closing sentiment which appears to glorify the Lords position.

Naïve to the complex and relentless nature of Coronavirus, there became a sense of despair felt across the country in April of 2020 when the nation took heed of the reality and duration of lockdown. Unbeknown to all, the nationwide lockdown would continue for an additional ten weeks. During this time of trial in both body and spirit, individuals were driven to God through their anguish for normality, a novelty previously side-lined by all. In facing an uncharted locale, one could arguably suggest we were collectively called by God to reflect and confirm our devotion. By way of displacing Church space, the pandemic enabled global reflection and faith journeying which extend the bounds of any building or structure. For this reason, there became a bloom in alterative directories for faiths in the usage of social media platforms and multi-media applications, Zoom being one of many examples.

Changing landscape of the Church post pandemic.

After the turbulent year faced by all across the globe, a sense of permanency remains in regards to particular dimensions of life. Moreover, the position of the Church has also changed and evolved in its contribution to bettering the lives of persons both in lockdown and beyond. Whilst the extent of development is yet to be reflected fully in the faith sector, the reassessment of worship environments signal posts a transformative shift in motion. The necessity to move worship beyond the locale of four walls has bought depth to alternative faith praxis, including conduction of services in tents, woodland and less conventional landscapes. The success and derailment of traditional Church space leads one to question whether worship and faith praxis will remain ever-changed after the Coronavirus pandemic.

Governed not by the cross at the alter, but the abundant markings of social distancing guidance, citizens were able to attend Church once more in the months of June to November and again from March to present. The reintroduction of sacred space was quite literally masked by enforced separation of devotees, for individuals can no longer find comfort in being together in worship. Whilst a logistical challenge, the Church has become centred in its focus on pure and authentic worship amongst the community. Visualised throughout the pandemic is the Church's ability to mould its praxis and maintain its dedication to attendees.

On the 23rd of March 2020, the United Kingdom entered unprecedented territory in its governed sanction to Lockdown the country. Responding to the rapidly developing global reach of Coronavirus, the United Kingdom confined the lives of its inhibitors to the fall walls of their dwelling [unless a key worker for society]. In keeping with this movement, Church became inaccessible to all and followers of Christ were called to demonstrate the strength of their faith to Lord Jesus Christ in daily acts and reflective practice at home.

Over the period of lockdown, a multi-media application entitled 'Zoom' became the largest platform for both professional and personal gatherings online. In the space of only eight weeks "Zoom users grew by over 2,000%," a staggering statistic of which demonstrates its scope in the everyday lives of UK citizens. Engaging with this trend, the Church quickly utilised its success by streaming live services and offering personal slots for reflection. In partaking with the trends of society, the Church enabled their congregations to develop and sustain hope in a bleak time.

Preceding the Coronavirus pandemic [2019-Present], Church characterized the collective identity of all who sought to be in communion with God. Peter James Yoder documents this vision in The Church of the Heart, an epilogue which reflects upon the "rich connection between the means of grace and the identity of Church" and Christendom. Whilst established and symbolic of major Christian denominational offshoots, Church as a primary location of Christian praxis has begun to shift in the utilisation of nature and outdoor environments for worship, a happening taking shape over the last decade and perhaps contributing largely to the stunted attendance of 4.7% of Brits who are forecast as Church-goers in 2022.
