Glencroft was established in 1987 by Richard and Justina Sexton as a range of classic British countrywear made from natural fibres including British Wool, Harris Tweed and sheepskin.

Based in a 200 year old converted cow barn in Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. We take inspiration from the rural life and stunning scenery that surrounds us, from our Yorkshire style flat caps and warm chunky jumpers, to our 100% British hand finished sheepskin rugs.

A Lifetime’s Experience

Richard has worked in the wool and sheepskin industry since the 1960s and has seen massive changes in British manufacturing over the past 60 years. He remembers when it used to take a week to visit all the different woollen mills across the North of England – we still work with some of the few remaining.

Manufacturing Excellence

Over 80% of our products are made right here in the UK, many in the same factories by the same people for the past 30 years. The other 20% is made in mainland Europe, again by people and factories that we know, trust and spend time with every year, including gloves and some slippers in Portugal, a country with a long history in sheepskin tanning and manufacturing, and we can also attest to some exceptional wine.

Every British sheepskin rug is hand finished and quality checked by Richard using a steady hand. Where possible we reuse every offcut and waste material – either giving to local people and organisations for free, or using for items such as our sheepskin bobble hats or stuffing our sheepskin poufs.

We indicate on every page where the product is actually made – and this means the whole product manufacture, not just where the product has been designed or finished or where the material came from.

FONTY, « la Filature de Rougnat » est une des dernières manufactures de filature et de teinture de laine encore en activité en France.

Le Label EPV, decerné par le Ministre de l’Economie, distingue les entreprises porteuses d’un savoir faire d’excellence, reconnu rare et précieux.

Créée en 1880 sur les rives du Cher, à quelques kilomètres de ses sources au cœur des Combrailles en Creuse, terre traditionnelle d’élevage et d’industrie textile, la Filature Fonty constitue un des trésors du patrimoine local.

Labellisée Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (EPV) en 2017, cette manufacture plus que centenaire perpétue un savoir-faire d’exception, transmis de génération en génération.

Il est constitué de procédés originaux, de compétences pointues, d’expérience cumulée, de gestes affinés au fil des années, associés à un parc de machines traditionnelles que l’équipe entretient, rénove et complète progressivement et qui témoignent de la place historique de la filière textile régionale.

La Filature Fonty est membre actif de l’association Lainamac, qui se fixe pour objectif de promouvoir et développer la filière laine du Massif Central.

Le magasin d’usine de la Filature, c’est un secret bien connu des tricoteuses et artisans des environs, partagé avec quelques passionnées qui viennent, parfois de très loin, pour dénicher le fil de leurs rêves.

On y trouve bien sûr les collections actuelles de fils, mais également des collections anciennes, des essais, des produits semi-finis, des « queues de pelotonnage », des produits abandonnés, et des raretés de toutes sortes. Echeveaux, bobines, pelotes, laines en vrac, on peut tout voir, tout toucher. Avec les tarifs exceptionnellement remisés, ce sont de belles affaires !

C’est aussi l’occasion de faire connaissance avec l’équipe, et pour ceux qui se sont inscrits aux visites privées organisées les 3èmes mercredis de chaque mois, de visiter la filature (voir ci-dessous).

At Halifax Spinning Mill Paul has a wealth of experience in making the best out of fibre.

Smaller quantities of fleece (1 fleece upwards) can be used to create slivers for felting and hand spinning. 

If you have a slightly larger quantity of fleece (10kg and upwards) we can create slivers or pencil rovings that are both ideal for felting or hand spinning. 

If you have a minimum of 30kg of raw fleece we can create slivers, pencil rovings or yarns. We are able to create a yarn that meets your particular requirements and Paul is happy to support you in ensuring you get the best out of your fleece. 

Yarn may include single ply, 4 ply weight, DK, Aran and chunky, as well as other specialised yarns that can be discussed based on your personal requirements. We can also blend different fleece types together for shade and quality purposes.

A Family Run Business Since 1960

Lightowlers Yarns celebrated 50 years in the woollen yarn spinning business in 2010.

The business was established in 1960 by brothers Frederick William (Teddy) Lightowlers and Richard Morley Lightowlers in premises built for the purpose dating from 1866 at Brigg House Mills in Meltham, a village 5 miles from the centre of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, England.

Lightowlers is currently run by second and third generation family members, Peter Lightowlers, Michael Lightowlers and Mark Lightowlers.

The company manufactures both commission and for sale yarns for the apparel, upholstery, blanket and hand knitting trades. Traditional and modern production techniques can be applied.

Customers range from small weavers in Scotland to larger manufacturers in the UK, Ireland and Japan.

What's The Knitwit Stable?

The Knitwit Stable is Reina Ovinge's farm with a knitting studio. After working as a buyer and producer for 20 years, she decided after a visit to China in 2013 that it was time to make a positive contribution to the fashion world. During her career, Reina had only seen the industry get bigger, faster, cheaper and more unreasonable. The effort, labor and pollution required for a cardigan that eventually hangs in a shop for € 19.95 is often invisible. The current system that hides behind our clothing is clearly outdated and causes great damage to people, animals and the environment. Reina is convinced that creating insight and transparency is a step towards a more sustainable fashion production model. She does this at her own farm and knitting workshop, where the entire wool production chain is exposed. The Knitwit Stable advises , informs and facilitates companies and fashion professionals in this way. From animal-friendly livestock farming, via sustainable production and processing of the materials, to advice on supply chains and communication; everything is covered in, for example , training courses and lectures. The Knitwit Stable also enters into collaborations with other companies, makers and designers.

Research in places such as South Africa and Italy yielded a great deal of knowledge about the production and processing of sustainable mohair and Dutch wool. Reina now breeds angora goats and merino sheep herself. Partly from their fleeces, The Knitwit Stable makes sustainable yarns and end products from wool on various knitting machines in the studio . In this way, Reina and her colleagues make the path to sustainable wool accessible and transparent, and this versatile renewable material once again receives the appreciation it deserves.

Merrick – our Scottish Blackface sheep knitwear brand launches today (9th November) alongside a landmark crowdfunding campaign that will support the next stages of the projects. Our goal is £12,500 and funds raised will be used to produce and market a new range of high-end knitted outerwear garments, created in partnership with local designers, makers, farmers, community representatives and more. The clothes will be made using 100% Blackface wool sourced within the UNESCO Biosphere region, and all sales profits will be put back into supporting the Biosphere’s ongoing work in conservation, education, climate resilience and sustainable development. With enough support, GSAB’s ground-breaking project could support Sustainable Development Goals in Scotland, and help protect our rural heritage by inspiring new uses for wool from Scottish Blackface sheep.

Launching the appeal on the Crowdfunder platform, Marie McNulty, GSAB’s Deputy Manager and Business Development lead, said: “It is crucial that we all work together to find new and unprecedented ways of tackling the biggest interconnected challenges of our time. This participative approach is at the very heart of the UNESCO Biosphere model and the Blackface Wool Project is a brilliant example of the impact it can make. By connecting people with their heritage and encouraging them to collectively explore solutions, this innovative project is already making a positive mark environmentally, socially and culturally, while reviving an important traditional rural trade. UNESCO has even congratulated us on our work in this area.

“The project’s early success is testament to the fantastic support we have had from British Wool, the Blackface Sheep Breeders’ Association, and farmers, business owners, creatives, organisations and individuals throughout the Biosphere region who are passionate about their Blackface wool heritage. After successful testing of our prototypes, we hope our crowdfunding initiative will now allow us to take our clothing range to market, showcasing the potential of locally-sourced wool in fashion design and instilling a greater sense of national pride in Scotland’s Blackface wool industry.”

Farming of Blackface wool from one of the country’s most recognisable sheep breeds dates back at least to the 12th century in the south of Scotland, and is commemorated in museums and heritage sites nationwide, including the renowned Sanquhar Museum in the north of the GSA Biosphere. However, the trend for ‘fast fashion’ left the sector’s future in doubt. Once much sought after due to its versatility, in recent years the value of Blackface fleece declined steeply as manufacturers sourced cheap man-made fibres elsewhere.

As the UN declared an “environmental and social emergency” within the global fashion industry, and consumer demand for transparency and traceability increased, the team at Scotland’s first UNESCO Biosphere saw an opportunity to spotlight wool’s potential:

• as part of the circular economy (which focuses on sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials);

• as a sustainable alternative to the greenhouse-intensive production of artificial fibres, which incurs tens of thousands of ‘textile miles’;

• to reduce carbon emissions in an industry that currently sends most Blackface wool for use in carpets abroad; and

• to directly benefit local farmers – all wool purchased for the project has returned much more than typical market value to farmers.

Explaining the need for the Biosphere’s project, Alec Telfer, President of the Blackface Sheep Breeders’ Association, said: “With an increasing awareness of the huge pollution issues brought on by micro-plastics in our atmosphere and oceans coming from oil based man-made fibres, wool must begin to be taken much more seriously. It is an extremely sustainable, natural and biodegradable product with outstanding environmental credentials, produced in the most natural environment in the world. It is vital that the fashion industry begin to use more wool and lead the way.

“The Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere’s exciting Blackface Wool Project, which is aiming to produce high end garments entirely and exclusively from the very best of Blackface wool, is what has been needed for a very long time.”

With funding from the Blackface Sheep Breeders’ Association and support from British Wool, the Biosphere team sourced 1,000kg of Blackface wool produced within the UNESCO-designated region. They then gathered a wide range of ideas through a variety of channels, including Bleat n’ Blether community events and a 400-strong Facebook group, The Wool Gathering, whose members tested lengths of Blackface yarn in knitting, weaving, and other creative projects.

One of the UK’s leading knit designers, Jo Storie, worked with the team to transform their ideas into the new high-end range of outdoor clothing. Speaking about the wool’s potential, she said: “Blackface sheep are the most numerous pure breeds in Britain, with the vast majority being found in Scotland. They are known for being a hardy breed, able to withstand the elements, which is clearly a selling point for the end use of their fleece. They produce a fibre that is not only renewable and sustainable, but also strong and durable, so stitches and structures are clean and well defined – this opens a lot of possibilities in terms of design. The wool is also thermoregulating, insulating and naturally biodegradable, so it’s an obvious choice for clothing and outerwear.”

Evidencing the market appeal, Kyle Thomson (pictured left), a shepherd from the Scottish Borders, was one of the first to try on the prototypes while modelling in British Wool showcase ‘Flock to Fashion’ event at this year’s Royal Highland Show. Kyle said: “It is brilliant to see a product that was previously seen as little to no value being turned into comfortable high-end clothing. With its low cost and fashion industry’s reliance on manmade materials, I hadn’t really considered it would ever be used for this purpose.

“When I put the jumper on, I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable it was to wear. Even on a roasting hot day, it had great breathability. It was also a nice fit and a lovely colour. I tried on around six garments that day, and the Blackface wool jumper was definitely my favourite.

“Not only does the wool create incredibly stylish clothes, but it has a low environmental impact due to the way Blackface sheep are traditionally farmed. It is eco-friendly as it is a natural fibre with a plentiful supply in Scotland.”

Supporting GSAB’s Crowdfunder appeal, Graham Clark, Marketing Manager for British Wool said: “It is extremely exciting to see the early success of Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere’s Blackface wool project, which is very much in keeping with our mission to drive sustainable demand for wool. Product development and innovation are absolutely key to achieving this.”

The global significance of the project, and the Galloway & Southern Ayrshire Biosphere’s wider work on sustainable farming, was recognised at a UNESCO meeting in Venice earlier this autumn.  At the event, UNESCO and abrdn Charitable Foundation announced the funding of five projects around the world which support sustainable development. This included $25,000USD for the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere for research and the development of guidelines to support farmers and land managers in sustainably managing their natural capital (natural assets that are valuable sources which can help people to survive and flourish, including soil, water, air, and biodiversity). The project will address biodiversity loss and mitigate climate change impacts.

UNESCO Biosphere Reserves provide models for how people can live with nature and use resources for the wellbeing of people everywhere, through knowledge sharing and sustainable development that maintains respect for cultural values and society’s ability to cope with change. A participatory planning approach is at the heart of all Biosphere operations, and of the Blackface wool initiative. WELCOME TO ULLFORUM

It started like this

Ullforum began as a project that included wool processing and breeding. The Jämtland sheep was born from this project, a sheep breed with fine-grained, soft wool. A spinning mill was also started and from November 2018 the spinning mill is run by us members of an economic association.

Small spinning mill – Big ambition

Our spinning mill is small. But we have a spinning machine that can spin wool in a variety of coarsenesses, from finger coarse to really thin (1 Nm – 12 Nm). So the range of yarns we can create is large. Our ambition is also great. We want to use the domestic wool and spin beautiful quality yarn from it. We also want to help local sheep farmers get a market for their wool. So to encourage continued sustainable wool production, we buy the wool we use at market prices from sheep farmers who we know care about their animals and their wool.

Our ambition is also that ullFORuM's operations and products should be kind to people and nature. So, for example, we use vegetable spinning oil in the spinning mill and the raw wool is washed in a detergent made from whey.

Our logo, which remains from that time, symbolizes the sheep, Dalarna, the family and the spinning wheel, the four cornerstones that are still the most important in our company today. Our business idea is to produce high-quality yarns and wool products from Swedish wool. Wool brokering simplifies the purchase and sale of wool between sheep owners and wool processors with the overall aim that more of the Swedish wool with its breadth and different qualities from the Swedish sheep breeds will be useful and used. The market place is financed by Upplandsbygd locally led development and has been developed with the goal of creating a meeting place for consumers and producers. We will make use of more of the Swedish wool through the development of a digital service. The service should simplify the buying and selling of wool in various forms and according to a number of categories and descriptions of the product. During the build-up phase, the focus has been on the sheep industry in the municipalities of Östhammar Uppsala, Sigtuna and Knivsta in the leader area. After the end of the project, the digital service is national. The service must, through new technology and the possibilities of digitization, provide a concrete benefit for those who use it.

The project's long-term goals are, among other things, to:

• increase the level of supply for sheep entrepreneurs by stimulating the possibility of an income from the wool instead of treating it as waste and a problem

• contribute to a more sustainable resource utilization of a raw material that is largely thrown away

• make rural resources available in the form of raw wool that is available and in demand

• encourage and stimulate creative entrepreneurship in rural areas

• encourage product development and innovations

Our story

Sweden is internationally a small country of sheep and wool. There are about 600,000 sheep and lambs in the country, and according to information, we throw away about 70 percent of the wool from the sheep. For animal welfare reasons, the wool must be sheared once a year, preferably twice a year if the wool is to be processed. Which, of course, makes it a huge waste of resources not to take care of the wool, which is a natural, renewable and sustainable fiber with outstanding properties. In itself, an innovation.

When I discovered that there was a lack of an arena for sheep owners to sell their wool and for those who sought wool and want to buy, a passion was awakened to be involved and change the situation. At a seminar during the "From lamb to sweater" project in Uppsala county, the idea of ​​testing Facebook as an arena was raised. A group was started and in a few weeks it had around 2000 members. Today, seven years later, the group has grown to over 6,000 members. But not everyone has Facebook and there are limitations in that solution, it is difficult to search and get an overview, and Facebook has started to stop ads about animals and animal products. This causes ads to be deleted and if it wants to, Facebook can delete the entire group. Therefore, we archive the group and refer here to the website instead.

In 2017, the idea received financial support from Upplandsbygd locally led development and the Swedish Agricultural Agency, with funding from the Rural Development Fund. In 2019, we developed a digital service in project form, a marketplace for Swedish wool, which replaces the Facebook group. The ultimate aim of all this is, of course, to help buyers and sellers meet so that we can put an end to wool wastage. This is our contribution.

Liselotte Erixon is the first student of Hantverksakademin i Sverige AB to graduate in the profession of wool consultant.

We are located at Lundby Gård in Odensala, between Knivsta and Märsta, where we will have the opportunity to receive wool for rough sorting and forwarding, and in the future also have some sales of wool and wool products.

We currently offer several solutions:

• Pick-up on site in connection with cutting. Restrictions exist for the number of animals and the route.

• Purchase of wool left in Odensala with compensation in connection with delivery at a fixed price.

• Collection and forwarding of wool that is replaced after sale to the customer.

The compensation levels depend on the wool's quality, quantity and breed of sheep and are therefore a matter of negotiation between you and us.

All wool that is litter-free and untipped may be of interest, so don't hesitate to get in touch even if you have other than autumn sheared wool.

When left in place, the wool must be free of belly and thigh rolls, and sorted with each fold separately. For large quantities, it can be waived by agreement.

We cannot accept wool that is heavily contaminated or felted.

Båvens Spinnhus has a machine park consisting of ten different process parts that make up different steps in processing the wool. After a manual coarse sorting of the raw material, the following occurs:

The wool is tumbled in a large drum where the needles and straw are separated away. The wool is then washed in a washing machine specially developed for our raw material. The centrifuge removes much of the water before the wool is placed on special drying trolleys for a number of hours, often overnight.

The next step is the Pickel machine, which fluffs up the wool, and is then blown into a room, where it is then sprayed with anti-static agents. The cleaners card (that is, straighten the wool fibers) and remove the remaining debris. Then the wool is carded in the large carding plant. Here different types of wool can be mixed in the desired mix. Here we also make various products such as cardamom and tops for spinning.

The stretching unit lays the fibers parallel and pulls out the pre-yarn before spinning. The spinning machine has eight bobbins that we can spin with at the same time. The twister twists the yarn into two-, three- or four-strand yarn. On the cone machine, we wind the yarn onto cones. The yarn is then steamed in a steamer, with hot steam, which fixes the cord on the yarn. Finally, we unravel the yarn in Härveln.

All this takes place in a machine park purchased by Mini Mill in Canada. The trend to make use of locally produced wool is strong all over the world. The number of local spinneries in the US has multiplied in just 5 years.

The watchword for Båvens Spinnhus is flexibility. In addition to sheep's wool, we can also accept wool from Mohair and Alpacas. The machines can actually also make textile products from dog and cat hair, it might seem a bit far-fetched today, but who knows...

Gården Brink is beautifully situated in Stjärnorp's forests north of Linköping. On this old family farm there are cows, horses, sheep & alpacas. In 2016 I started a small spinning mill to refine the wool from my own animals and receive for wage spinning.

On this old generational farm, there has always been a milk cow. We ourselves have had dairy cows since 1987, but have now stopped milking. In 2016, I chose to start a wool spinning company to get another financial leg to stand on. The spinneriet is a mini-mill that comes from Canada. I have chosen a smaller number of machines, so I can only make yarn that is delivered to skeins. And the reason for this choice is that I run the spinnery on my own. My daughter Hanna comes 2 days a week and dyes the yarns and helps with what is needed.

I try to be kind to our earth. We produce most of the electricity used in the spinning mill with our own solar panels.

The heat in the spinning mill comes from the machines and is supplemented by an air source heat pump.

The detergent we use is GOTS-approved, even the colors for the yarns are GOTS or REACH-approved.

We also have our own water here on the farm. As the animals and the spinning mill are here on the farm, we avoid unnecessary transport except for the small amount of rya & angora wool we buy in

Ulla-Karin Hellsten is the designer and artistic director of the spinnery. In May 2014, she was appointed an honorary doctorate at Linköping University for her work in the meeting between artistic activity, business and academia.

Börje Norberg is responsible for the production. Through his technical interest, he has a unique knowledge, which is no longer available in the country, about how the various mechanical machines work.

Catharina Orrenius has been an employee of the company since 1993 and is well versed in all stages of the production chain.

Ullcentrum is the company for you who, like us, try to protect natural materials and an ecological way of life. We collect Swedish wool from big and small farms on Öland and in the south of Sweden. This wool is then transformed into beautiful, warm clothing, slippers, hot pads, insoles etc., all designed and produced by ourselves.

By having interviewed elderly local women and researching old patterns from Öland, we are able to give these a new life in our knitted garments. In addition to that we also have knitted and woven linen garments, gift items and so much more.

At Ullcentrum we are proud to be able to preserve one of the best natural materials available – Swedish wool.

Swedish wool is a fantastic fiber with several uses. For several years, the Swedish wool has not been used to a large extent. We saw an opportunity to be a bridge between the lamb producer and industry, with the hope that we will be able to make use of more Swedish wool. 
Our main focus is wool from crossbred animals and the Gotland sheep. 
The areas of use for Swedish wool are many, to name a few; yarn, needle felt, stuffing, etc. 

What happens to the wool?

The wool is sorted, classified and packed into bales. We have a hydraulic press to help us. Each bale weighs approx. 200 kg if it is white wool, 300 kg if it is Gotland wool.

We work actively to find potential buyers of our Swedish wool. It is important to find areas of use for all our qualities of wool if we are to succeed in stopping throwing away the Swedish wool.

FOR YARN

The entire process from wool to finished yarn takes place in our premises.

• Sorting: The first thing we do is sort the wool, then we look at the quality, if there is a lot of dirty wool or if it is of poor quality, then it is sorted out.

• Washing: Wool is washed in a large washing machine. We use a mild soap to get the wool clean and sometimes we have to wash it several times. We use the mild soap to preserve the wool's natural properties. 

• Drying : The wool is placed on mesh shelves for drying, as we depend on dry wool to process the wool further.

• Drumming: Wool is drummed in a large mesh drum. In the drum, a lot of dust and dirt falls out, Here the toklipp also falls out. 

• Picking: Here the wool is picked and pulled apart, which means that it gets fewer lumps and it becomes more airy.

• Separation: The separator is a kind of cleaning machine, it removes cover hair and debris from the wool. Sometimes it has to be run several times, depending on the type of wool.

• Carding: The wool goes on to the carder, where it will come out as a thick and airy strip of wool, also called pre-yarn.

• Stretching: Here, two or three strips of roving are mixed together into one, while the roving is stretched. This means that unevenness is evened out, and that the fiber lays as parallel as possible before the spinning machine.

• Spinning: Now we have come to the spinning machine, and here we spin the pre-yarn into a thread. If the wool was of poor quality, too poorly washed or other errors have occurred during the process, we usually only discover it here. Then it happens that we have to start all over again.

• Twisting: Here the thread from the spinning machines is twisted together into two- or three-thread yarn.

• Steaming:  The yarn is pulled through a tube with steam. This means that the finished yarn does not twist as much, and it makes the surface of the yarn smoother.

• Winding: In the winding machine, the yarn is wound into the rope you buy from us.

• Dyeing: If the yarn is to be dyed, it is done here.

• Yarn washing: The yarn gets a second round in the washing machine, before it is marked with a belly band.

• As you can probably see, there is a lot of manual work behind a yarn hook

Wir kardieren für Sie Ihre gewaschene Schafwolle Die Wollkämmerei wurde 1980 von meinem Vater Theodor Godosar als Nebenerwerb gegründet.

Schon seine Eltern besaßen eine kleine Kardiermaschine. In den Jahren von 1939 bis 1946 kämmten sie kleinere Mengen Schafwolle von privaten Schafhaltern.

Er erlernte 1946 den Beruf als „Spinner und Weber“ in einer Weberei in Grünberg. Er besaß sehr viel Erfahrung über das verarbeiten von Wolle. Sein Beruf machte im sehr viel Spaß.

1980 entschied er sich zum Kauf einer gebrauchten Kardiermaschine (Bj. 1960). Es war die Zeit des Spinnbooms – Öko war angesagt. Zusammen mit seiner Ehefrau Irmgard kämmte er gewaschene Schafwolle für überwiegend Privatkunden.

Aufgrund eines Schlaganfalls im November 1987 konnte er die Firma nicht mehr selbst weiterführen. So entschied ich mich die Firma zu übernehmen und als Nebenerwerb weiter zuführen. Mit großer Unterstützung und Erfahrung meines Vaters erwarb ich mir über die Jahre hinweg die Kenntnisse über Schafwollverarbeitung und den Umgang und Wartung der Maschine. Auch meine Mutter unterstützte mich tatkräftig bis 1990 beim Wolle kardieren.

Seit 1990 steht mir meine allerliebste Ehefrau Susanne tatkräftig zur Seite. Sie hat seitdem sehr viel Erfahrung und Kenntnisse über die Wollkämmerei gewonnen.

Auch der Verkauf von gekämmter Schafwolle am Vlies gehört zu unserem Service.

Die Schafwolle wird von Hand sortiert, gewaschen und zum Teil gefärbt.

I created Woolly Mammoth Fibre Company to produce naturally dyed, non- superwash, nylon free yarn. The bases are spun in Yorkshire, Wales and Ireland.

I want my yarn to feel as if it is from somewhere- so that you can almost smell and feel this place by handling it. In wanting what I create to have roots, it is a reaction against the transitory, generic culture we live in.

My focus is on meeting farmers, sheep and shearers with a view to creating specific, regional, small batch yarns.

All yarns produced are predominately from the UK, and the limited edition yarns are from flocks close to my studio here in Northern Ireland.

Slow

My yarns are naturally dyed, using a mixture of traditional dye extracts, kitchen waste and responsibly gathered plants from my local area on the North Coast of Ireland.

Florence a toujours aimé les fils et voulait retrouver la création ( architecte de formation).  Elle achète des toisons chez les éleveurs wallons et les fait filer soit à "la filature du hibou" (B-Boninne) soit à "la filature de Niaux" (F).  Elle tricote la laine avec 2 aiguilles traditionnelement ou avec les 150 aiguilles de sa machine à tricoter manuelle,

Le tricot se décline ensuite en une dizaine de couleurs par la teinture naturelle.  Florence utilise principalement des plantes, qui lui viennent en majeure partie de son jardin (tanésie, oignons,...).

The Summer Academy was established in 1998 by  Karin Flatøy Svarstad, and is today organized as an association with its main base in Voksa, Sande municipality, Møre and Romsdal

The aim of the summer academy is to create art and cultural activities in the districts, build networks in "Vesterled", and facilitate collaboration and exchange in art, culture and crafts.

In Norway, the activities are mainly linked to the counties of Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane and Møre og Romsdal.

Courses are arranged with exciting topics and skilled instructors in nice surroundings. This makes it possible to combine the course with a holiday, not only for the course participants, but also for other family members.

Several trips to the countries in "Vesterled" have gradually meant that you have made good contacts there, and the trips are often combined with courses.

Our wool initiative, "Collection of Diversity - preserving rare native sheep breeds," was launched to focus specifically on marketing the wool of individual native sheep breeds that are endangered. Our aim is to make the wool of these endangered sheep breeds and their typical characteristics appealing to both breeders and consumers, thereby securing the long-term existence of the threatened breeds. Additionally, we place great emphasis on ecological and regional processing in the manufacturing of our products: All wool products are exclusively made in smaller businesses, mostly family-owned, in Germany, Northern Italy, and Austria, using wool from the respective native sheep breed. This enables you to purchase high-quality products made from 100% native wool directly from the producer.

Die Inhaberfamilie treibt der Idealismus, die teilweise bereits extrem seltene Genetik der alten Rassen zu erhalten und dabei gleichzeitig die Tiere in unterschiedlichstem Gelände so einzusetzen, dass jede Rasse ihre besonderen Vorteile und Eigenheiten optimal einbringen kann. Alles, was die Tiere dem Betrieb schenken wird verarbeitet, also selbstverständlich auch Vliese und Wolle. Alle Garne sind frei von Kunstfaser und chemischen Beimischungen.

Die bis zu 10 Zuchtgruppen weiden in Naturschutzprojekten, auf den wegen des Klimawandels immer seltener werdenden Feuchtwiesen und in schützenswerten alten Obstbaumbeständen. Sie entbuschen alte Espanflächen und grasen weitere Flächen in der Umgebung des Betriebes ab. Ein Teil der Ziegen- und Schafsböcke befindet sich saisonal in einem Projekt zur Erhaltung des Apollofalters auf der Arnsberger Leite im Altmühltal.

Die Kid- und Adult Mohairgarne werden bisher im benachbarten Ausland produziert. Da es so oft farbig nachgefragt wurde, gibt es das Mohair inzwischen in vielen verschiedenen Farben.

Die Schafwolle wird komplett in Deutschland versponnen und ist in verschiedenen Naturfarben und daraus zusammengestellten Melangen verfügbar. Die Schurwolle von vom Aussterben bedrohten alten Schafrassen ist aus biologisch zertifizierter Haltung.

Wir sind ein kleiner Familienbetrieb, der sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, einem wertvollem, nachwachsendem Rohstoff die Wertschätzung entgegen zu bringen, welche er verdient hat.

Mit dem Waschen, Spinnen und anschließendem Verarbeiten des ersten angefertigtem Wollstrangs, ist die Liebe zu dieser Naturfaser entstanden.

Die unendlichen Möglichkeiten mit den Fasern von unterschiedlichen Schafrassen zu arbeiten, ist faszinierend, beruhigend und kreativ. Die ersten entstandenen Mützen, Tücher und Decken, aus einem selbstgesponnenem Garn mit einem Spinnrad und einer Stricknadel hat die Leidenschaft und die Liebe zur Wolle zum Leben erweckt. Nachdem aus einem vermeintlich unbrauchbarem, nachwachsendem Rohstoff ein wunderbares Endprodukt entstanden ist, was einen wesentlich besseren Ruf verdient hat, haben wir uns entschlossen die Verarbeitung der Wolle weiter auszubauen. Naturfarbene oder farbige Wollstränge, Spinn- und Filzfasern und viele weitere Schafwollprodukte sollen unser Sortiment stetig erweitern.

I opened my workshop in 2019 and my work is about historical textiles craft from prehistory to medival era. I do professionnal reenactment/animation for museum about ancient textile (and ancient wool and woolcraft) and I also do some modern creative craft with local wool from France (ancient and traditionnal breeds of sheep from little farm). I handspun my yarn on a wheel, I weave and crochet it to create scarf, stole and shawls. I also weave pile weaving / vararfeldur.

Active sur le terrain depuis 2017, l’Association de la Filature de l’Avançon a été créée en 2018 dans la Vallée des Plans sur Bex, au confins des Préalpes Vaudoises. Elle réunit notamment des éleveur-se-s, des amoureu-x-ses et de la laine, des artisan-ne-s, des personnes sensibles aux valeurs de développement durable. 

Les buts de l'association sont:

• Valoriser la laine locale, par respect pour notre environnement

• Contribuer à faire vivre une vallée rurale de montagne, par le développement d'échanges commerciaux adaptés et ancrés dans leur environnement

• Revitaliser les liens entre les habitants, s'ouvrir aux divers passants

• Créer une plateforme d'échange entre professionnel-le-s des métiers de la montagne

• Développer localement chacune des étapes de la filière de transformation lainière

• Transmettre un savoir-faire en organisant des visites didactiques

The collection of wool from Slovak farms, its processing and installation in homes is the fulfillment of our intention to create buildings from local and natural resources. With learning to spin wool came the desire to own our own sheep so that we could follow the entire process through on our own farm. We choose a breed of sheep that are recognised as the oldest registered native breed of sheep in Ireland, unfortunately a breed that are also in danger of extinction. This breed of sheep was first recognised in the 1880s and the Roscommon Sheep Breed Society was established in 1885.

The Roscommon Sheep breed were noted for their sheer size and for producing large fleeces of the highest quality wool. Each year we use the wool from our sheep for natural plant dyeing, spinning and weaving.  A limited number of items made from their fleeces are available to purchase and we also sell fleece at different stages of preparation.

Hi, I’m Sandra King, and my journey with wool and fibre started at an early age when my Granny gave me a hook and taught me to crochet. I loved it, kept creating, and am still crafting with fibre.

I am a city girl from North Carolina who later moved to the Irish countryside. Thinking that there would be loads of wool available from all the sheep here, I was very excited. But I did not find the hand-spun, textured yarns that I wanted for my work, so I started thinking about spinning my own.

I purchased a spinning wheel at a craft fair, bought 3 sheep, and loved caring for the animals, feeling their fleeces, and making a product from them. Dyeing my own came next, and when I was gifted a loom, I began weaving.

I have always loved craft and had a dream of opening a craft gallery. In 2019 I made the decision to act on my dream and Irish Fibre Crafters was born. I worked and operated this studio/gallery for 5 years, then decided to move everything to my home in the hills of County Clare. Besides displaying and selling unique creations made from my sheeps fleece, I teach classes in traditional fibre crafts. You can drop by, watch me spin and weave, ask me questions, have a cup of coffee, enroll in a class or workshop for adults, or a ‘camp’ for children, and purchase Irish wool yarn and fibre.

Rare breed Manx Loaghtan wool and wool products

Manx Loaghtan wool is much sought after as the fleeces are soft, close textured and lustrous, heavily oiled and excellent for hand spinning. The staple varies between 70 mm to 100 mm. When spun it is naturally a dark to light toffee colour. Once knitted it is fine enough to be comfortably worn next to the skin yet robust enough to be used in outerwear.

2015 haben wir unsere ersten fünf Muttertiere von der Wanderschäferei Wolfgang Mersch in Gildehaus erworben. Seitdem ist die Leidenschaft für die Schafhaltung und die Wolle stetig gewachsen.

Wir leben seit 2001 in der Grafschaft Bentheim, nahe des Dreiländerecks Niedersachsen – Nordrhein-Westfalen – Niederlande. Als Hobbyschäfer betreiben wir die Herdbuchzucht des Bentheimer Landschafs, eine gefährdete Rasse.

Die Wolle des Bentheimer Landschafs ist schlichtweiss und fällt lang ab. Sie reicht fast bis zum Boden. Die Fasern sind stark, relativ grob (30-37 Mikron), lang und strähnig.  Die Wolle enthält etwas Stichelhaar und ist gut geeignet als Interieurwolle, weniger für Pullover. Sie besitzt eine hervorragende Spinn- und Filzqualität.

Wir verwenden die Wolle in Handarbeit in einer kleinen Gemeinschaft.  Alle Produkte sind Unikate und finden meistens auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt oder im Bekanntenkreis ihren Käufer.

Nach der Schur wird das Vlies sortiert, wobei Kot- und Heureste entfernt werden. Dann weichen oder fermentieren wir es in Regenwasser. Wenn die Wolle viel Lanolin enthält, wird sie nachher in warmen Wasser gewaschen und an der Luft getrocknet.

Dann fängt das Zupfen und Kardieren an, der letzte Schritt in der Vorbereitung von Spinnwolle. Eine kleine Gruppe von Frauen spinnt und verzwirnt die Wolle zu Strick-, Häkel- und Webgarn. Das gesponnene Garn wird nochmal gebadet, getrocknet und zu Knäulen gewickelt. Und dann wird gestrickt oder gehäkelt.

Mit dieser Handarbeit haben wir erst vor zwei Jahren angefangen. Völlig vom Wollvirus befangen, lernen wir ständig neue Techniken und sind total begeistert von unseren ersten eigenen Produkten. Auch, wenn die noch nicht alle Perfekt sind…

How can we add value to your fleece?

At Halifax Spinning Mill Paul has a wealth of experience in making the best out of fibre.

Smaller quantities of fleece (1 fleece upwards) can be used to create slivers for felting and hand spinning. 

If you have a slightly larger quantity of fleece (10kg and upwards) we can create slivers or pencil rovings that are both ideal for felting or hand spinning. 

If you have a minimum of 30kg of raw fleece we can create slivers, pencil rovings or yarns. We are able to create a yarn that meets your particular requirements and Paul is happy to support you in ensuring you get the best out of your fleece. 

Yarn may include single ply, 4 ply weight, DK, Aran and chunky, as well as other specialised yarns that can be discussed based on your personal requirements. We can also blend different fleece types together for shade and quality purposes.

Higher Gills Farm nestles at the foot of Pendle Hill in the heart of Lancashire and is owned and farmed by three generations of the Pilkington Family. The farm is a mix of pasture land,woodland and moorland with panoramic views over the Forest of Bowland and the Ribble Valley.

All our products are traditionally crafted from the wool of our pedigree Teeswater flock.

Darrell and Freda have kept a small flock of pedigree Teeswater sheep for 30 years and prior to 2001 used Teeswater rams on a flock of 400 Dalesbred ewes producing Masham lambs. The Masham females were sold on in the autumn as flock replacements on lowland farms.

All our products are designed by Freda Pilkington here on the farm and either crafted by herself or woven at a mill practising traditional production methods. This is extremely important to us as it ensures the fine quality of the wool is retained.

Begonnen hat alles im Jahr 1982 mit dem Ankauf einer soliden Krempelmaschine aus den 1960er Jahren. Mit so einer Maschine wird Wollvlies hergestellt, welches die Basis für viele unserer Produkte ist. 

In der österreichischen Schafhaltung fällt die Wolle meistens als Nebenprodukt an und wurde oft entsorgt, da sich die Vermarktung der Wolle wegen der niedrigen Weltmarktpreise oder der geringen Mengen nicht rentierte. Genau in diesem Problem erkannten wir die Chance, einen wirtschaftlichen Betrieb auf ökologisch nachhaltige Beine zu stellen. Schafbauern bringen ihre Wolle zu Sammelstellen, die Wolle wird gewogen und den Bauern auf ein „Wollkonto“ gutgeschrieben. So entstand ein nachhaltiges Tauschgeschäft, welches allen Seiten dienen soll. Dass dieses System funktioniert, zeigt uns die langjährige Partnerschaft mit unseren Wollbauern und -bäuerinnen.

Seit unserer Gründung im Jahr 2015 konzentrieren wir uns auf Kopfkissen, Duvets und Matratzenauflagen aus erstklassiger Naturwolle. Geschichte der Alpur AG

Am Anfang standen Herstellung und Vertrieb von handgefertigten Arvenkissen. Befüllt mit Arvenspänen und Schurwolle aus der Schweiz, entstand dabei eine bis heute andauernde Faszination für Schafwolle: so machen die natürlichen Eigenschaften diesen Naturrohstoff zum idealen Füllmaterial für Bettwaren aller Art. Über die Jahre wurde das Sortiment erweitert, so dass inzwischen Kissen, Bettdecken und Matratzenauflagen aus verschiedenen Wollarten verfügbar sind.

Nicht nur unser Sortiment hat sich mit der Zeit vergrössert. Auch die angebotenen Grössen wurden kontinuierlich ausgebaut. So sind wir heute in der einzigartigen Lage, Bettwaren in allen denkbaren Grössen schnell und unkompliziert zu liefern. Egal ob schweizerische, österreichische, deutsche oder sogar nordische Masse – bei uns finden Sie die passenden Grössen für Ihr Schlafzimmer.

Seit 2020 ist der Name Alpur auch als Marke für Bettwaren geschützt. Dadurch können wir sicherstellen, dass das Qualitätsversprechen nicht von Nachahmern missbraucht wird.

Seit 1986 beschäftigt sich die Familie Lierzer mit der Schafhaltung und Wollverarbeitung. Maria Lierzer hat durch eine Vielzahl an besuchten Kursen und Workshops das uralte Handwerk erlernt. Den großen Schatz an Erfahrungen und das Können gibt Maria gerne an interessierte Männer und Frauen weiter. So kann ein Filzkurs für Anfängerinnen ebenso wie ein Kurs zum Filzen von Hüten, Taschen oder Patschen besucht werden.

1 Hofbesichtigung
Eine Führung durch den Betrieb zeigt Ihnen die wichtigsten Verarbeitungsvorgänge der Schafwolle, an alten Geräten. 

2 Filzkurse
Ein besonderes Erlebnis ist es, in einem von Maria geleiteten Kurs das Filzen, die älteste Wollverarbeitungstechnik, zu erlernen. 

Kardieren
Mit unserer, mehr als 100 Jahre alten, aber auf die neue Technik aufgepeppten, Kardiermaschine kämmen wir unsere gewaschene Schafwolle. Auch Lama und Alpaka Haar können wir, ohne Z ugabe von Schafwolle, kardieren.

4 Weben
Neben dem Kardieren, Filzen und Spinnen wird am Hof der Familie Lierzer auch fleißig gewebt. Neben Teppichen und weitern kunstwerken ist Maria Lierzer auch eine begabte Bettchenweberin. Das Brettchenweben erfordert hohe Konzentration. Allein das Aufbäumen der Muster ist die schwierigste Arbeit.

Aus der anfänglichen Verarbeitung der Wolle von den eigenen Tieren hat sich bald „Wollhandwerk“ entwickelt. Mein Ziel ist es mit Wollhandwerk altes textiles Handwerk und deren individuellen Möglichkeiten modernisiert wieder zu beleben. Bei der Umsetzung folge ich meinen eigenen Grundsätzen von Qualität, Umweltschutz und artgerechter Tierhaltung.

In Handarbeit und mit Hilfe von zum Teil an die 100 Jahre alten Maschinen stelle ich Wollvlies und Wollgarne her. Gefärbt wird mit Pflanzen in einem großen holzbefeuerten Kessel der früher zum Futterdämpfen verwendet wurde. Alte Techniken wieder zu entdecken und ins Heute zu holen ist für mich eine große Faszination. Dieses Wissen weiter zu geben damit es nicht verloren geht macht viel Freude und ist mir besonders wichtig. Das alte textile Handwerk ist für mich lebendig und ein stetiger Entwicklungsprozess der niemals endet. Es ist spannend zu sehen wie unter meinen Händen Schritt für Schritt ein kleines Kunstwerk entsteht – jedes Mal aufs Neue ein Wunder!

Viele Jahren Schafhaltung gepaart mit "Stricken mit den Omas" führte zu meiner Leidenschaft für Wollhandwerk.  Am Hof wird in das klassische Wollhandwerk vom Schaf bis zum Schal erarbeitet.  Obwohl diese Handwerk als privates Hobby gedacht war, hat es sich inzwischen weiterentwickelt.  Es wurden inzwischen verschiedene Handwerksvorstellungen gemacht.  Ein ausführlicher Wollverarbeitungsworkshop mit der Landjugend Saalfelden inklusive Videodreh und eine Darstellung im Buch für ihr Jahresprojekt war ein Highlight.  Noch dazu, diverse Beiträge in regionalen Zeitschriften und in der Schafzucht Zeitschrift, Schaf & Ziege, über Schafe und das besondere Handwerk .  Vorstellungen bei Schaffesten mit probespinnen und filzen gehört natürlich auch dazu.  Zusätzlich, im Zusammenhang mit unserem Kreativhof dürfen wir unsere können immer öfters weitergeben.

Vom Scheren über das Einsammeln und Waschen der Wolle bis hin zum Sortieren, Kardieren, Filzen, Walken und Nähen – bei Bergauf sind viel Einsatz, handwerkliches Geschick und Geduld gefragt.

In unserer Manufaktur geht nichts automatisch, sondern alles von Hand. Nicht ganz. Denn ohne unsere Kardiermaschine aus dem Jahr 1930 würde nichts laufen. Sie ist Tag für Tag treu und lautstark im Einsatz und das museale Herzstück unseres Betriebes.

Gerne gewähren wir unseren Kundinnen und Kunden einen Einblick in unsere Werkstatt, wo es auch noch viele andere größere und kleinere Helferlein zu entdecken gibt: von der Nadelmaschine bis zur Walzenwalke, vom Multiroller bis zur Breitschleuder. Live zu erleben wie Filz entsteht, lässt erkennen, wieviel Arbeit hinter jedem Bergauf Unikat steht.

Our story

The company Soven, from Selnica ob Dravi is eco-friendly family manufacturing company. Its work since 1996 and is registered for processing unwashed and washed sheep’s wool in line with the European regulation in this area and the basic European guidelines.
Years ago, when in Slovenia nobody know and talk about circular economy, the company Soven starting to plan production in the way to qualify this conditions.

Sheep wool in the true sense of the word is not waste, but it can be. Wool is an animal by-product intended for further processing. However, if the breeders discard the cut and unwashed wool into the forest, into the karst cave, into the ditch or even burned it, sheep’s wool is a waste that burdens the environment.
At Soven we have taken a strategic and organized approach to processing sheep wool. The basic input material (unwashed sheep wool) is purchased from breeders in the field, or the breeders bring it for purchase at a company in Selnica ob Dravi.

At least 70% of the produced wool is bought from Slovenian breeders annually, but more could be bought, but some breeders do not want to deal with it. By selling wool, breeders earn some money, while preventing environmental pollution. Some countries around the world either grant paid buyers a buy-in concession or have wool growers pay the same as for the disposal of other waste. In Slovenia, this is a complete burden on wool processors, which is not a lucrative business. Nevertheless, Soven manages this activity with great enthusiasm and replaces the redemption funds with the added value of other products.
For Soven, it was not only a challenge to process shorn wool, but also from inferior quantities of wool, which used to be a waste product in the production of typical woolen products such as woolen bedding, woolen yarn, to make a still useful product for construction or agriculture.

• Protect the ground from wind and temperature changes: it will be an effective barrier for plants that are sensitive to cold, wool being a naturally insulating fibre. A very breathable material, its insulating properties are retained even when wet thanks to the air cushions between the fibres which prevent the plant from freezing.

• Biodegradable, sheep’s wool felt does not contain any harmful substances because the wool it is made from is not treated. This felt is very well absorbed into the soil after breaking down, it provides the soil with nutrients that enrich it such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

• Its use helps to reduce or even eliminate weeding and promote soil biological activity. In addition, the felt is a gastropod (slugs and snails) repellent thanks to its repellent texture.

• Depending on the terrain profile, the sheep’s wool felt makes it possible to retain soil and reduce erosion.

• Easy to set up, sheep’s wool felt is easy to cut and thanks to its neutral colour, which may vary slightly depending on how the wool is produced, it fits very well into the landscape. The rolls are sold and offered in three different densities: 400 gr/m², 600 gr/m² and 900 gr/m².

Wild Welsh Wool was started in 2017 after a move to the beautiful Welshpool area in 2015 and having a bit of grazing we decided to keep some sheep. Being a member of the Rare Breed Survival Trust we decided to support rare breed sheep and we are now keeping Hill Radnor, Manx Loaghtan and Greyface Dartmoor. There is also a Black Welsh Mountain, black Blue face Leicester, Cotswold, and a Boreray cross ewe who has an amazing fleece. The sheep are mostly very friendly and have lovely relaxed lives living on our hills having lambs and growing beautiful fleeces.

My work and the sheep reflect the business name being primitive, wild and rustic. The fleeces used are from our own flock and some from local farmers for a variety of colours and textures.

The peg loom is the main part of my business, though I also spin, tapestry weave and do felted back fleeces as well as felted slippers. We also make peg looms and can supply warp thread and fleece as a starter kit to collect from the farm or posted out to you, as well as our own rovings for felting and spinning. We also sell Aran and DK skeins of yarn made from our fleeces in various naturally died colours, as well as our own sheepskins which are organically tanned in Somerset making them safe for babies and children.

All woven and felted items can be made to order in sizes and colours/breeds to suit individual requirements and made from customers own fleeces. Every item is hand made by myself from washing the fleeces in spring water (using no chemicals) to the weaving and finishing.

I also offer courses for peg loom weaving, tapestry weaving, felted back fleeces and felted slippers on the farm or online.

Sadly, we find breeders using it as compost or having it collected for recycling, rather than treating it as the amazing material it is today. Meanwhile, much of the yarn available to crafters is either cheaply produced and synthetic, or mass processed in distant countries, with little traceability, beyond the fibre content. Even much of the yarn labelled 'hand dyed in the UK' has been sourced from a distant shore and spun in another, before finally being dyed in the UK.

Filz - als Basis unserer Produkte

Wir stellen Produkte aus Nadelfilz her. Der Begriff beschreibt die Herstellungsart mit Nadeln, nicht das Endergebnis – das ist je nach Wollart weich und anschmiegsam. Über 2500 Nadeln mit Widerhaken verfilzen die Fasern zu einer stabilen Matte. Das Besondere: Sie ist 50 cm breit, 0,5-2cm dick aber die Länge ist variabel. Aus dieser Basis fertigen wir dann zum Beispiel Bankauflagen, Sitzkissen und Flaschenwärmer. Durch unsere Spezialisierung auf die Filzherstellung produzieren wir kein Strickgarn.

The Alpaca wool comes from the company Alpacas of the Low Lands.

The Kempen wool is collected from the herds in the Brabant countryside and from the dunes of North Holland.

Filature artisanale luxembourgeoise

WollMillen est une filature artisanale luxembourgeoise qui a été créée pour valoriser la laine de nos moutons et de nos alpagas. 

En effet, il n’y a plus de filature de laine au Luxembourg et les propriétaires de troupeaux ont beaucoup de difficultés à trouver des artisans avec le savoir faire nécéssaire. 

Ce qui a pour conséquence que toute notre belle laine locale stagne sur les hangars ou est exporté pour un traitement industriel. 

C’est pourquoi nous avons décidé de créer WollMillen, afin de perpétuer notre savoir-faire ancestral luxembourgeois du travail de la laine et de valoriser la laine de nos cheptels.

Chez WollMillen, nous sommes fiers de travailler avec des matières premières locales et de qualité. Nous proposons une gamme adaptée de services artisanaux et éthiques liés au travail des toisons. 

Nous sommes convaincus que la laine est une matière noble et durable, qui mérite d’être valorisée et travaillée avec soin.

Nous sommes heureux de contribuer à la préservation du savoir-faire traditionnel lié à la laine au Luxembourg, et de proposer des services de qualité, respectueux de l’environnement. 

A ce stade du projet, notre équipe est essentiellement composée de bénévoles et nous travaillons avec nos équipements personnels que nous avons mis à disposition de WollMillen. 

La laine est filée au rouet traditionnel par nos bénévoles qui se forment régulièrement dans des stages à l’étranger.

Dans une seconde phase, notre projet devrait bénéficier de supports logistique et financier afin de faire l’acquisition des machines nécessaires à la réalisation des différentes étapes du filage.

Nous espérons que notre filature artisanale sera une source d’inspiration pour les amoureux de la laine et de l’artisanat, et que notre travail permettra de redonner vie à cette belle matière première locale.

In Vestre Gausdal, on the banks of the Jøra River, is our spinning mill and production premises. Here, English machinery from the 1950s stands, carefully restored and put into operation in 2024 to create high-quality yarn. The wool comes from Norwegian farmers who share our belief in the value of locally sourced, natural raw materials.

We are happy to have the opportunity to felt our creations with quality, soft and 100% local wool.

The wools of our sets and accessories are carefully selected and sorted after shearing. The fleeces come from a small organic sheepfold of Lande de Bretagne which grazes on the small heights of Menez Hom.

This rustic breed, endemic and historical of this beautiful region, allows us to travel between times, knowledge and always awakens a little more our curiosity and creativity.

I started felting after a career in education. I was inspired by Cumbria’s long history of sheep farming and the many photographs I took.  As a keen walker and photographer, I am often out on the fells which provide a constant source of inspiration. Needle felting is an ideal medium to capture the textures and colours that characterise the animals and landscapes that are my subjects. Initially, I felted portraits of local Lake District sheep such as Herdwicks and Swaledales using locally sourced Herdwick and Swaledale wool. I now needle felt a wide variety of different breeds of sheep as well as the landscapes containing them. I also felt pets, ponies, cows, goats, alpacas, hares and red squirrels in a studio overlooking Ullswater.  

I am a member of the Cumbria Support Group of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. Since 2018 I have been needle felting my way through their Watchlist of endangered breeds in order to draw attention to this important issue. Many of the endangered sheep breeds are the traditional wool breeds.

Since we have Drentjes we have been breeding pedigree sheep, felting their wool and giving workshops in this. In the meantime Marlaine has even become an inspector of the  NFDH and Marie-Cecile has obtained her diploma in Creative Therapy in addition to her psychology practice and 't Ceciliahof, which allows her to build a bridge between psychology and her passion for felting.

We now have our own ram group of about 15 rams (sometimes one or more moves for the pedigree), almost 30 ewes and a wether (that is a castrated ram). Every year we breed with a selected group of ewes and one or two matching rams. The requirements that we have to meet according to the pedigree are quite strict. For example, the percentage of relationship must be less than 1% and both parent animals must be approved. 

We also spend a lot of time and attention on shearing our animals. Because no matter how many there are, we always take the time to remove their coats as well and pleasantly as possible. We shear with scissors, the so-called blade shearing. This has the advantage that we can see very well what we are doing and the coat comes off very nicely, without a second shear and without injuries to the animal. The skin of a sheep is really very thin!

In the beginning it was quite a job to cut the furs so that they could be felted well. Now it works fine. It often happens that the freshly shorn fur is on the table within half an hour to felt a back of wool.

The idea to start giving workshops soon arose, first felting fur and later also slippers, scarves, catcaves and now much more. And even now there are often fun new ideas, such as the felted soaps and cat toys, because you can be endlessly busy with wool.

To give that little bit extra we also have special furs to felt such as the Norwegian Spælsau, Racka, Heidesnuck, Schoonebeeker and many more. Marie-Cécile also makes the most beautiful things to order.

In the summer period mainly the felting workshops are given because with good weather it is not at all bad to get a little wet. These workshops are mainly given by Marie-Cécile. Marlaine helps in the spring and autumn, but is often away in the summer as a judge for the NFDH (Dutch Breeders Association Drents Heideschaap).

In the winter we give smaller workshops in our cozy wool house, such as bags, slippers, scarves or needle felting workshops. In this way we are active with felting all year round.

Die Wollwerkstatt in Texing, im Mostviertel gelegen, hat sich seit nun 40 Jahren ganz dem ökologisch wertvollen und nachwachsenden Rohstoff Schafwolle verschrieben.

Begonnen hat alles im Jahr 1982 mit dem Ankauf einer soliden Krempelmaschine aus den 1960er Jahren. Mit so einer Maschine wird Wollvlies hergestellt, welches die Basis für viele unserer Produkte ist. 

In der österreichischen Schafhaltung fällt die Wolle meistens als Nebenprodukt an und wurde oft entsorgt, da sich die Vermarktung der Wolle wegen der niedrigen Weltmarktpreise oder der geringen Mengen nicht rentierte. Genau in diesem Problem erkannten wir die Chance, einen wirtschaftlichen Betrieb auf ökologisch nachhaltige Beine zu stellen. Schafbauern bringen ihre Wolle zu Sammelstellen, die Wolle wird gewogen und den Bauern auf ein „Wollkonto“ gutgeschrieben. So entstand ein nachhaltiges Tauschgeschäft, welches allen Seiten dienen soll. Dass dieses System funktioniert, zeigt uns die langjährige Partnerschaft mit unseren Wollbauern und -bäuerinnen. Mittlerweile wird bei uns nicht nur die Schafwolle, sondern auch die feine, kuschelweiche Alpakawolle zu tollen Produkten verarbeitet.

Sheep shearer Dirk Jan van Dalfsen from Ermelo founded Wolterra (in 2021). He started by converting the wool that was 'left over' after sheep shearing into wool pellets. These sheep wool pellets serve in nature as food for plants, (fruit) trees, (vegetable) gardens, agriculture, sedum roofs, etc. By doing this on a regional scale ( in Gelderland / in the Netherlands) we complete the circle. This short chain fits perfectly as a sustainable mineral food, soil improver and water buffer for gardening in the (vegetable) garden, on the terrace or balcony and within circular agriculture.

This is how sheep's wool has gone from a waste product to a circular product!

30 million sheep are sheared in the UK every year making it a local and totally renewable raw material. Using wool makes sense for the environment as well. Wool is actually a 

carbon store - it is made up of around 50% carbon. It also has a carbon footprint of less than 5% of glass and stone wools.

Die wollverarbeitende Produktion hat ihren Sitz auf dem Höhbeck, einer Geestinsel im wendländischen Elbetal, angrenzend an die Lüneburger Heide, Altmark und Prignitz. Hier haben wir, die beiden Betreibenden und Geschäftsführenden Hannah Wilimzig und Stefan Reinsch, bereits 2013 den Landschaftspflegehof Artenreich Höhbeck gegründet. Der Höhbeck ist ein Hotspot der Artenvielfalt und wir wollen hier mit einer althergebrachten Landwirtschaft die Lebensräume Tausender teils seltener Tier- und Pflanzenarten erhalten. Auf mehr als 30 Hektar Flächen entwickeln und pflegen wir eine strukturreiche Landschaft aus Trockenrasen und Wiesen samt Säumen und naturnahen Wäldchen. Derzeit sichern wir mit über 350 verschiedenen Wildpflanzenarten einen wesentlichen Teil der regionaltypischen Flora und Fauna des Offenlands.

Hannah Wilimzig (Jahrgang 1979) kümmert sich überwiegend um die beiden Skuddenherden mit insgesamt knapp 50 Tieren, die eigens dafür und ihr langes Leben lang auf unseren Flächen umherwandern und diese allmählich in die Zeit des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts zurückentwickeln.

Stefan Reinsch (Jahrgang 1968) kümmert sich um die handwerkliche Landschaftspflege und lichtet nach und nach die ehemalige Heide und Trockenrasen aus. Zu den Schätzen des Projektes gehören auch 2 Blumenwiesen, die ausschließlich von Hand mit Sense und Heureuter über den Sommer abgeerntet werden und das wichtige Raufutter für die Schafe im Winter liefern. Und nicht nur hier tummeln sich unzählige Heuschrecken, Bienen und Schmetterlinge…

Unsere Landwirtschaft ist eine kleine Kreislaufwirtschaft: Die Wiesen liefern Heu und Einstreu für die Schafe. Der Mist (Nachtkoppel) dient als Dünger für den Hopfengarten. Der Ertrag ist das abgemagerte artenreiche Grünland – und Wolle, die wir, zusammen mit der Wolle von anderen Landschaftspflegern in unserer Manufaktur auf 300 Quadratmetern verarbeiten.

Unsere Wolle kommt aus aus dem Biosphärenreservat Niedersächsiche Elbtalaue und der Altmark. Wir kennen unsere Schäfer:innen persönlich und können so die Qualität der Wolle und das Tierwohl garantieren.

Der Hauptjob der Schafe ist die Landschaftspflege. Ihre Wolle wird meist als Abfallprodukt angesehen und die Schäfereien erzielen dafür nur sehr geringe Erlöse.
Wir zahlen unseren Schäfern faire Preise für ihre Wolle. Das erlaubt es ihnen, nicht nur nachhaltig zu wirtschaften, sondern auch die Wolle für uns nach Qualitäten zu sortieren.

Unsere Garne sind ganz ohne chemische Ausrüstung besonders pilling-arm. Das bedeutet, dass sie nicht so leicht Flusen und Knötchen auf der Oberfläche bilden, wie es z.B. bei Merino- und Synthetikfasern nach längerem Tragen der Kleidung passiert.

Durch die lokale Verarbeitung unterstützen wir traditionelles Handwerk und regionale Arbeitsplätze und reduzieren durch kurze Transportwege den CO2-Fußabdruck erheblich.

Die Fellfilzerei Jawoll gibt es seit 2020 in Desibach bei Buch am Irchel. Ab vom Schuss. Mitten in meinem Leben. Dort steht mein Bett, meine Manufaktur und der alte Stall. Für mich der beste Ort, um Fellstücke zu kreieren und nach herkömmlicher Filztechnik herzustellen: Legen, Seifen, Reiben, Rollen, Waschen, Schütteln und Staunen. Kein Fell und keine Wolle ist gleich. Im Sortiment: Begehrenswerte Unikate nach Wunsch und Workshops, bei denen ich mein Wissen gerne teile.

Notre histoire

Nous (Matthew et Katie) avons commencé notre chemin ensemble en 1998 alors qu'à l'université. À l'époque, nous rêvions de vivre à la campagne dans un petit cottage, avec de la peinture écaillée sur les volets et des animaux de basse-cour! Nous avons toujours aimé la nature, la musique et la création de la beauté, et nous voulions envelopper nos vies autour de ces intérêts communs. Une autre vie nous est arrivée cependant, et nos premières activités après avoir déménagé en France en 2004 nous ont vus nous éloigner de nos visions de la vie ensemble rêvée.

Il y a quelques années, nous nous sommes rendus compte que nous devions réorienter notre parcours de vie, qui comprenait désormais nos deux fils, Jude et Isaac. Nous avons décidé donc de recommencer sur la base de notre amour commun du monde naturel et des animaux de la ferme. Nous avons appris qu'il est possible en France de devenir agriculteur sans autant de défis financiers que nous aurions dû affronter pour nous installer au Royaume-Uni. Après plusieurs années de recherche, nous avons eu la chance d'acquérir une trentaine d'hectares près de chez nous en 2015, et un troupeau de moutons Hampshire Down est arrivé peu après.

Au départ, Matthew a travaillé seul à la ferme, et après avoir suivi une formation en conception de permaculture avec Geoff Lawton, en 2017 il a commencé à développer un système de captage d'eau de "swales" (rigoles qui suivent le niveau), associé à la plantation d'une future haie nourricière. Beaucoup de réflexion et de travail ont été (et le sont toujours) exigés afin de mettre en place un écosystème résilient et adapté aux risques futurs auxquels nous serons confrontés, comme l'aggravation des conditions de sécheresse (source: MeteoFrance).

La production agricole proprement dite s'est développée plus lentement intentionnellement, car nous avons senti que nous devions nous attaquer à la question plus vaste du «pourquoi», plutôt que du «quoi et combien». En fait, lent est un excellent adjectif pour notre philosophie. Petit à petit, au fur et au mesure que cet écosystème se développe, des nouvelles activités et productions suivront.

Nous constatons que dans notre système, le mouton est un facteur clé. Autrefois, la laine était valorisée et transformée localement, et la viande de mouton était le roi de la table. Nous voulions explorer cette notion dans toute son ampleur, ainsi nous voilà aujourd'hui: tous nos moutons vivent plusieurs années en broutant les prairies, fertilisant le sol prêt pour les cultures céréalières, et quelques-uns d'entre eux sont finalement consommés en une viande très fine. Les moutons fournissent leurs toisons chaque année qui sont minutieusement triées selon la qualité des fibres. La laine est lavée, cardée et filée par certaines des rares laveries et filatures restants en France. Ce «projet laine» a créé l’ouverture pour moi (Katie) de redécouvrir mes propres racines créatives que j’ai gardées enfouies depuis très longtemps. Non seulement je peux désormais partager avec vous notre fil pure laine pour vos créations fabuleuses, mais la laine me permet aussi de rêver: imaginer, puis fabriquer, des beaux articles en feutre et des modèles de tricot chaleureux, élégants et fonctionnels pour votre plus grand plaisir. Je me suis également professionnellement formée en teinture naturelle afin d'ouvrir les portes du monde incroyable des couleurs cachées des plantes.

Nous avons encore de la route à faire dans nos voyages personnels et dans la pleine réalisation nos rêves et objectifs pour la ferme. Votre soutien et votre encouragement en tant que clients sont vraiment précieux et inspirants pour nous: un grand merci à vous tous.

Our story

We (Matthew and Katie) started our path together in 1998 while at university. Back then we dreamed of living in the countryside in a little cottage, with peeling paint on the shutters and farmyard animals. We always have loved nature, music, and creating beauty, and wanted to wrap our lives around these common interests. “Life happened” however, and our initial ventures after moving to France in 2004 saw us drifting far away from our visions of life together.

A few years ago, we realised we needed to reorient our life journey, which by now included our two sons, Jude and Isaac. We decided to start over based on our shared love of the natural world and farm animals. We learned that it is possible in France to become a farmer without as many financial challenges that we would have faced to set up in the UK. After several years of searching, we were fortunate to acquire almost 30 hectares near our home in 2015, and a flock of Hampshire Down sheep arrived soon after.

Initially Matthew worked on the farm alone, and having completed a Permaculture Design Course with Geoff Lawton, in 2017 he started to develop a water capture system of swales, coupled with planting up a future food forest. A lot of thought and work went (and is still going) into setting up a resilient ecosystem that is fit for the future risks we face here, such as worsening drought conditions (source: MeteoFrance).

The actual farm production has been developing more slowly intentionally, as we felt we needed to grapple with the bigger question of “why”, rather that “what and how much”. In fact, slow is an excellent adjective for our ethos. Little by little, as this ecosystem develops, new activities and products will follow.

We've noticed that in our system, sheep play a key role. In times gone by, wool was highly valued and locally processed, and mutton was king of the table. We wanted to explore that notion to its full extent, so here we are today: all our sheep live several years grazing the meadows, fertilising the soil ready for cereal crops, and a few of them are eventually consumed as very fine mutton. The sheep contribute their fleeces each year which are painstakingly sorted into yarn versus fibres for felt and bedding. The wool is washed, carded and spun by some of the few remaining scourers and mills in France. This « wool project » created the opening for me (Katie) to rediscover my own creative roots that I’ve kept buried for an extremely long time. Not only can I now delight in sharing with you our yarn for your own fabulous creations, but wool also allows me to dream: to imagine, and then craft, beautiful felt items and cosy, stylish and functional knitted designs for you to love. I've also taken professional training in natural dyeing in order to unlocking the doors to the incredible world of colours hidden within plant.

We still have a way to go on these personal journeys and to fully realise our dreams and goals for the farm. Your support and encouragement as our customers are truly precious and inspirational to us: a heartfelt thank you to you all.

Ovelha Mãe, a marca que tem a lã como matéria-prima, defende o lema: “Produzir peças com tempo e carinho que cada uma delas merece”. Estela Melo, 55 anos, é quem está por detrás do projeto que ‘viu a luz do dia’ em 2012. Oriunda de Aveiro, cresceu com um interesse inato pela confeção. “Comecei muito cedo a fazer a minha roupa porque ninguém a fazia ao meu gosto”, revela. 

Com um gosto pela criação, foi tirando formações na área têxtil até se aventurar na indústria com a sua própria marca. “Aprendi a trabalhar com algodão e linho, mas acabei por descobrir que queria dedicar-me à lã”. Há uma razão para essa devoção: “Gosto deste tecido pelo seu toque e diversidade. Existem lãs horrivelmente ásperas ou maravilhosamente macias”.

Estela Melo não lança coleções, cria peças únicas, o que, de acordo com a própria, é um desafio. “Ainda não temos uma grande cultura em Portugal que entenda que as peças de autor têm um valor diferente de peças em série”.

As suas criações são também a materialização de histórias, como é o caso de uma manta que custa 250€: “Inspirei-me nas antigas mantas de trapo que sempre andaram lá por casa com a sua característica costura a meio e aqui está o resultado. Cada manta que faço é única”.

Além das mantas, a Ovelha Mãe tem uma oferta diversificada de produtos que mantêm vivo o artesanato português: tapetes, cachecóis, casacos, vestidos, chapéus, pantufas para bebés, entre outros. Apesar de todas as peças serem diferentes, o tempo de criação é de, normalmente, um a dois dias. No entanto, quando exige um maior detalhe e complexidade pode durar até uma semana. 

O tear, o aparelho mecânico para fins de tecelagem, é a sua ferramenta de trabalho. “Desde criança que queria ter um tear”. Estela não se esquece da primeira peça que fez: “Foi um tapete tradicional às riscas azuis e verdes, duas cores que gosto muito”.

Ora em Coimbra, ora em Aveiro, Estela dedica quase 100 por cento do seu tempo à Ovelha Mãe. O processo de produção das peças começa com a extração da lã. Além de ter as suas próprias ovelhas, revela que os vizinhos também lhe dão matéria-prima ou, então, compra lã portuguesa. “Esforço-me por usar produtos nacionais”. A preocupação com o made in Portugal está até presente no processo de tingimento. “Vou ao quintal e apanho as plantas para tingir os fios”.

A artesã inspira-se nas viagens e no que os povos e os seus costumes têm para dar, fugindo sempre que possível do circuito turístico. “O que gosto de ver é o que não está à mostra.” Desta forma, as influências dos sítios onde já foi feliz vão estando presentes nas suas peças, em especial através da paleta de cores. “De forma inconsciente, acabo por andar a fazer viagens imaginárias”.

Em Portugal, gosta de visitar os sótãos e arrumos das “velhinhas”, como refere, o que a leva a descobrir mantas com anos de história, mas não é tarefa fácil. “Convencê-las que o que têm a cobrir as batatas são relíquias é difícil”, brinca.

Apesar de ser fiel à tradição, Estela Melo não vive longe do mundo da moda, visto que já marcou presença na Semana de Moda de Sevilha e é casada com Carlos Gago, um cabeleireiro de renome no panorama nacional. “Aproveito o know how antigo para fazer peças contemporâneas”.

A criadora faz parte da Associação de Criadores Têxteis Espanhola, viajando pelo mundo nas ‘asas do artesanato’. Recentemente, esteve em Badajoz e agora está a preparar-se para ir a Biscaia. Há uma feira que a marcou de forma especial: a Mostra de Artesanato do Uzbequistão, em 2019, que é um dos destinos favoritos dos fãs de tecidos. “Em termos têxteis, era tudo aquilo que sonhava ver há muitos anos.” 

As ovelhas fazem parte não só do ADN da marca, como da própria Estela Melo — e até por razões (no mínimo) insólitas. “Uma vez, uma ovelha bateu-me na cabeça e mandou-me para o hospital com um traumatismo craniano encefálico”, recorda. 

A família está presente desde o início do projeto, visto que as filhas são o braço direito da artista na criação de conteúdos gráficos, mas não só. Estela conta que o nome “Ovelha Mãe” surgiu na mesa de refeição num momento de brainstorming. “As minhas filhas viram-se e dizem: “A mãe é que trabalha com as ovelhas.” Não é do género “mãe galinha”, mas, sim, a mãe é que entende de ovelhas”. As curiosidades não se ficam por aqui. Algumas das etiquetas o “O” tem uma ovelha lá dentro e lê-se “O velha mãe”. “É engraçado. Remete-nos para o conforto da avó”, conclui.

Barbara Vestergaard and Marita Vestergaard í Lágabø are the women behind the exciting project Vesturgarður. They will tell about how they found a simple and nature-friendly way to wash the Faroese wool. The uniqueness of Vesturgarður's products is that everything is made from scratch; The wool is sorted, washed, dried, picked, carded, spun and then knitted by hand. All production takes place at Suðuroy, and all the wool comes from the local environment. This is definitely "slow fashion" in the truest sense of the word, and the unique approach also ensures that each item is unique.

Unsere in Öblarn in der Steiermark ansässige Firma stellt verschiedene Produkte von Strick- und Walkwaren in unterschiedlichen Stärken und Farben her. Unser Motto lautet: Aus der Natur mit der Natur! Gewalkt wird nur mit heißem Wasser. Auf chemische Walkzusätze wird verzichtet!

Wir sind der letzte Betrieb in Tirol, der Loden von der Rohwolle bis zum Endprodukt herstellt.

Unsere Produkte sind seit jeher zeitlos, also keine bunten Stoffe, sondern nur Naturfarben. Wir produzieren die gesamten Produkte in Eigenfertigung und haben meist nur eine kleine Menge auf Lager, der Rest wird auf Maß angefertigt, weshalb man mit Wartezeiten rechnen muss.

Die Lodenherstellung nach altem Wissen wird von David Kreutner selbst durchgeführt, während seine Schwester Rosmarie aus den erzeugten Stoffen, Arbeitsmäntel, Umhänge sowie Hosen und Gamaschen (alles auch in Maßarbeit) schneidert, kümmert sich seine zweite Schwester Walpurga Kreutner gekonnt um den Verkauf und den organisatorischen Bereich.

Bei vielen Vereinen sind unsere auf Wunsch gefertigten Lodenstoffe in speziellen Mischungen und Stärken das individuelle Erkennungsmerkmal ihrer Tracht und daher Bestandteil unserer Kultur.

Wir sind eine innovative Firma in Liebenau OÖ und produzieren  exklusiv in Österreich  den ersten biologischen Pflanzendünger aus Schafwolle. Die Entwicklung und die Umsetzung sind aus einer Kooperation mit dem Landesverband für Schafe OÖ hervorgegangen.

Seit vielen Jahren beschäftigen wir uns bereits mit dem Thema Schafwolle und Ihrer besonderen Wirkung als Dünger für den Garten. Viele Versuche im eigenen Garten mit der rohen Schafwolle haben uns die Gewissheit gegeben. Im Jahr 2012 haben wir dann mit der Produktion der Schafwollpellets begonnen und es hat sich bewährt. Viele Garten- und Landschaftsspezialisten sowie Hobbygärtner, zählen bereits zu unseren Kunden. Immer wieder berichten Sie uns von den zahlreichen Erfolgen, die Sie  mit unserem Schafwolldünger erzielen konnten.

Moreover, lanoline, also known as wool wax, is a common ingredient used by the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry. The innovation of cheaper synthetic and oil-based fibre gradually replaced the natural fibre of wool. Thus, the wool industry collapsed broadly not only in Greece but to a great extent globally, and wool is now mostly considered a waste of livestock farming.

The Pokari Project seeks to restore the value of Greek wool by creating a sustainable yarn that supports the primary sector, contributes to the reduction of waste, and conserves cultural heritage and indigenous sheep breeds.

Hand-selecting fleeces from their own flock of sheep and sourcing quality fleeces from local farms, Perthshire Wool offers a range of traceable breed-specific yarns grown with care and dedication, from native breeds such as Scotch Mule (BFL x Scottish Blackface) to continentals such as Beltex.

Beechwood Blues is a small-scale, eco-conscious wool producer based in County Galway, Ireland. We work with fleeces from our own pedigree flock of Blue Texels, as well as Galway and Roscommon wool. When needed, we source additional wool from trusted local pedigree breeders.

Our products are entirely hand-washed, naturally dyed using plants grown or foraged on our farm, and processed in small batches without the use of plastic, chemicals, or machinery. We’ve proudly sent our wool and finished products to customers across Ireland, Finland, and Canada.

Monte S. Pedro is a rural wool farm in the heart of the Alentejo that offers immersive wool and sheep-related experiences. The farm raises several sheep breeds – including Ouessant, white and black Merino, Beira Baixa Merino, Churra Algarvia, and Suffolk – in a free-range and sustainable environment.

Visitors can join hands-on workshops that guide them through the full wool cycle: from shearing, washing, and carding to spinning, felting, and crafting. These activities promote heritage wool knowledge and rural sustainability.

Some years ago, I discovered wet felting and fell in love with the texture, warmth, and versatility of wool. I started making felted soaps, candle holders, and jewelry—simple handmade pieces that bring joy and meaning to everyday life. What makes it even more special is that I use locally sourced wool from our region, connecting my work to the land and traditions of Vojvodina.

Wool also found its way into my gardening. I’ve experimented with using raw wool as mulch—a wonderful way to reduce waste and nurture the soil. Through the European Wool Association, I’ve had the chance to exchange experiences with others who share my passion and interest in natural, regenerative materials.

For me, working with wool is a creative outlet, a way to slow down, and a means of living more consciously. I’m always curious to learn more about regional sheep breeds and to support the revival of traditional wool practices in Serbia.

Since 1991, Þingborg Wool Centre has been a place where Icelandic wool is not only preserved but celebrated. Located in a former schoolhouse from 1927, we are a collective of local women who have come together to keep traditional Icelandic wool crafts alive—from hand spinning and dyeing to knitting, felting, and full fleece processing.

All our products are made with 100% Icelandic wool, sourced directly from local farmers. Beatesol is a craft studio based in Bergen and Mjølfjell, Norway, dedicated to traditional sheepskin work using locally sourced materials. Founded and led by Beate Solvik, the studio specializes in handcrafted items made from Norwegian and Swedish sheepskins, including breeds such as Norwegian White Sheep (NKS), pelssau, spælsau, Gotland, Leicester, and Heilsa sheep.

The product range includes full sheepskin rugs, baby sleeping bags, slippers, mittens, earwarmers, collars, stoles, cushions, throws, and smaller decorative items. All pieces are sewn by hand using strong waxed linen thread. Many items are decorated with traditional patterns printed using hand-carved blocks and long-lasting textile dyes. Edges are often finished with suede or mocca leather for added strength and aesthetic value. The sheepskins are primarily tanned at Granberg Garveri in Norway or at selected Swedish tanneries and are treated with FiberProTector to ensure water and stain resistance while maintaining softness.

In addition to production, Beatesol offers workshops across Norway focused on traditional sheepskin techniques. Courses range from full weekend programs on making printed sheepskin rugs (skinnfell) to shorter sessions for crafting hats, mittens, slippers, and other small garments. These workshops emphasize hands-on learning and the use of high-quality natural materials.

Surrounded by the towering peaks of the Bavarian Alps, in the village of Mittenwald, lies the heart of my work: felting with native sheep wool. My name is Heidi Greb, and for over two decades I have dedicated myself to the traditional craft of felting – a timeless art form that binds landscape, culture, and material into one.

For me, wool is not just a fibre – it is a story. I work exclusively with wool from native mountain sheep breeds, especially the Braunes Bergschaf and Weißes Bergschaf – hardy, alpine-adapted sheep whose coarse wool carries the scent of alpine meadows and the spirit of resilience. Their wool is strong, grounding, and perfect for felting – whether I’m crafting warm slippers, sculptural forms, or poetic everyday objects.

My felting process is deeply intuitive, shaped by traditional techniques like wet felting and needle felting, and guided by a strong connection to place. Each piece is handmade, with attention to texture, colour, and the quiet power of natural materials. I believe in using wool regionally – not only to reduce waste and transport but to keep our wool culture alive.

Through workshops, markets, and collaborations with shepherds and cultural institutions, I share my knowledge and love for this ancient craft. Felting, for me, is also a gentle form of activism – showing that local wool, once discarded, is full of beauty, strength, and meaning.

At Nordwolle, we are passionate about bringing back the true value of wool from native German sheep breeds – especially the Rauwolliges Pommersches Landschaf, a hardy coastal sheep traditionally found in northern Germany.

We founded Nordwolle on the island of Rügen to challenge the idea that native wool is a waste product. I’m Léna, the hands and heart behind Mogosh Wool Craft, a small but deeply rooted wool initiative based on this remote island off the coast of Connemara.

Working side by side with local sheep farmers and shearers, I collect the wool directly from the island’s flocks. Every step of the process—from sorting and washing, to carding, felting, spinning, and dyeing—is done by hand in my island workshop, using chemical-free methods. My goal is to honour the natural qualities of the wool and the traditions of this unique place while creating pieces that are full of warmth, care, and story.

I’m Bianca Vonk, the founder of Lana Wolatelier, a small wool atelier based in Warns, a rural village in the southwest of Friesland, the Netherlands. I work with raw wool from local sheep and specialize in traditional felting techniques, creating natural, sustainable interior pieces.

My focus lies on:

My name is Manon, and I am a wool artisan based in Normandy, France, working under the name NONA Melotis. My craft is dedicated to sheep’s wool and to the long, patient journey that transforms a freshly shorn fleece into a finished, meaningful object.

I work in close collaboration with local farmers from my region, collecting the fleeces just after shearing. From that moment on, I personally carry out every step of the transformation by hand, following traditional and ancestral techniques.

I begin by washing the wool to remove lanolin and natural impurities. I then card the fibres, carefully brushing and aligning them so they are ready to be spun. Using a spindle or a spinning wheel, I spin the wool into yarn, adapting the process to the character of each fleece. This yarn becomes the basis for my knitted and woven creations.

With my hand-spun yarn, I create bonnets, ear warmers, shawls and other textile pieces. I also work with carded wool directly, felting the fibres by hand to produce jewellery, brooches and decorative objects. Each piece is unique and reflects both the material and the time invested in its making.

All my work is done slowly, manually and with great respect for the fibre. Wool is a living material, shaped by the land, the sheep and the people who care for them. Through my craft, I aim to honour this material and to keep traditional wool know-how alive, while creating contemporary objects that can be worn, used and cherished.

Story & Significance:
Val de San Lorenzo is one of Spain’s most treasured centres of traditional wool textile art, with roots stretching back to at least the 17th century. Once home to more than eighty cloth producers, this Maragatería village became a thriving hub of artisanal textile production by the 18th century. When industrial shifts challenged local crafts in the early 1800s, artisans reinvented themselves by mastering woollen blankets and cloths, learning techniques from production centres in Palencia.

By 1858, the first locally woven blankets were exhibited, paving the way for local textiles from Val de San Lorenzo to be awarded at exhibitions including the 1900 Paris International Exhibition.

The community spirit of this tradition culminated in 1920, when 73 neighbours formed the cooperative La Comunal and established mechanised carding and spinning facilities housed in the historic Batán building. The Batán Museo and C.I.T. La Comunal now preserve this rich heritage, where visitors can witness traditional wool processing, old hydraulic fulling hammers, and looms in action — a living story of adaptation, craft, and continuity.

Today the site stands as a cultural and educational landmark, showcasing Val de San Lorenzo’s enduring connection to wool — from sheep’s fleece to hand‑woven textiles — and its contribution to regional identity and sustainable craft traditions.
