In Chapter 7, Ari doesn't really feel like he belonged to his own body. But all of these emotions kept coming at him, his sisters saying he's "a little late", he hates being named Angel, and how his mom made an accusation saying he doesn't have any friends. So he would write down anything he feels in a journal.

While waiting, he reads a book that Dante gives him, "a book of poems by Williams Carlos Williams" (pg 99), and his mother comments on the fact that he's reading poetry. After explaining that it belonged to Dante's dad (a professor at a university), the mom mentions not having any professors of color at her university while studying. Then, Ari starts wondering what his mom's experience must have been becausee he thinks he knows her so well, but he doesn't know anything from her past. In the end, the mom tells Ari that he could be a poet, but he thinks that it would be something "Too beautiful for me."(pg 100)

Toa

One of the rules of summer is that Ari hates showering with boys. Ari overhears two guys fetishising womens bodies. This chapter is where Ari and Dante first meet, and Dante offers to teach Ari how to swim. Ari and Dante tell each other that their fathers are a mailman and an English professor respectively. Dante is a disciplined and knowledgeable teacher. He is described as "funny, focused and fierce." They talk about comic books and that conversation quickly transfers to a conversation about the fact that Ari was more Mexican and that if they ran away they would be poor. He gets in a small argument with his dad.

After Ari's fourth swimming lesson with Dante invites him over to his house. There he meets Dante's dad, Mr. Quintera, who is a Mexican-American English Professor. He is young and handsome and seems to have a vibe that screams that he is in love with life. He is almost completely different than Ari's dad in a sense. He and Dante have an almost perfect relationship and completely understand each other. Ari is envious of Dantes's relationship with his parents, for his relationships are not as splendid as Dantes's. His relationship with his mom was easy and uncomplicated, but only most of the time, and his relationship with his father was almost non-existent while Dante's just seemed so simple and uncomplimented. They went upstairs to Dante's room, it was a large room with high ceilings and hollow wood floors. Dante had so much stuff scattered around the room, so he put on some music on his vinyl record player and started to clean it. While he cleans Ari and Him have a conversation about their relationships with their parents, and how they examine them. Dante cleans his room in such order and organization, all his books stacked neatly on his shelf. He pulled out one of his poetry books and started to read. Ari admires him as the sun streaks in through the window. His book looked like the only place it should have been was in his hands. Ari didn't care if he didn't understand the poems very well, he just cared that Dante's voice felt real and that made him feel real. That day he learned two new words. "Inscrutable." And "Friend."

Then his dad appeared next to Aris brother Bernardo, and Ari saw that his dad was hurt by Bernardo. Then his dream changed. His father and brother vanished. Then he saw Dante. He had no shirt and no shoes. Ari was trying to come up to Dante but couldn't move. Then Dante says something in English to Ari, but Ari doesn't understand it since he only knows Spanish. Since they're speaking two different languages, Ari feels alone and wakes up feeling lost. His fever is back, and Ari sleeps again, dreaming about sparrows following from the sky and killing them.
