What is FAPE?

FAPE stands for free appropriate public education.

FAPE covers four key components: Free (at no cost to the parent) Appropriate (independent education plan (IEPs)outline a program for students to meet their unique needs) Public (students have the same rights to attend public schools as all children)

FAPE is part of 6 principles covered under IDEA

these 6 principles include:

The right to FAPE means special education and related services are available to eligible children with disabilities aged 3 to 22 and are to be provided at no cost to the parents.

this means all students with disabilities or covered by 504 don't have to pay anything for their education.

Students who have an individualized education plan (IEP) may need services such as speech therapy, physical therapy, behavior technicians, and other related services. these services are not free. However, Parents do not need to pay a penny towards these services because they are covered under FAPE.

More restrictive placements are necessary when IEP teams find that a student with disabilities cannot function in a regular classroom or would not benefit from a regular classroom.
