In this video, Dr. Erin Gonzalez, gives the audience an overview of ADHD. The developmental part explains that it is with you starting when you're young and tends to stay with you over time. She explains what five things an expert would look for when diagnosing a child with ADHD. While these symptoms sound like things that every child has, which is correct, we do all have these symptoms to a degree, children with ADHD will experience these symptoms to a higher degree than most other children their age. There are a lot of things that experts are able to notice inside the brains of children with ADHD, allowing them to diagnose it.

In this video, Megan Slater informs the audience that 90% of kids inherit ADHD from their parents, while 10% of kids get ADHD from a traumatic brain injury or illness that they had as a child. She explains how ADHD is when the frontal lobe of someones brain doesn't develop as rapidly as others and this can stay with them until they are 30 years of age. Children with ADHD have a hard time planning, a hard time making decisions, and have a hard time learning from mistakes. These kids are also prone to take part in risk-taking behaviors in order to replace their dopamine, as it is diminished.

During this video, Dr. Paul explains how there are some behavioral things adults can do in order to make a huge difference. He draws a graph including control and maturity to help the audience understand where parents should be in helping their kids with ADHD. He goes into depth with the chart by explaining the different stages of these two components, immature-mature and having no control-having total self control. By understanding where your child is in that continuum, this will determine what parents need to do to give their child the correct help. He also explains the practical approach to parenting them in four steps, which include 1. "Giving them a task" 2. "You hope that they blow it" 3. "Allow the consequences to do the teaching" and 4. "Giving the same task again". Dr. Paul thoroughly explained helpful parenting strategies for children with ADHD in this video.

While learning Jacob's story, we learned that Jacob had tendencies that were different from other kids his age. When Jacob was five, he was diagnosed with autism. They noticed certain things about Jacob such as he had illegible writing, he wasn't able to tie his shoe and getting dressed that he wasn't able to do. Also, Jacob started falling behind academically. However, when they met with Dr. Katz, he didn't think that he had autism which is when he was diagnosed with ADHD. Jacob, was put on medication, which totally changed his life. Now, he is totally capable of things that he wasn't before, like taking care of himself. He also informs the audience that there are two primary treatments for ADHD, which are behavior therapy and medication.

This video explains how the brains of children with ADHD process things much differently than those without, which is why they need some different parenting. We are able to understand that kids with ADHD have a 30% lag in their ability to self regulate. It may look like kids with ADHD are just not listening and not following their regular routine, while in reality it is just very hard for them to have consistent behavior, which is where sticking with the parenting is key, even when it might be difficult. Adults must think ahead, give their children more feedback, and motivate them with rewards.

I chose this topic because I was aware of how many kids ADHD effects. I knew there was a high percentage of someone in one of your classes to have ADHD, so I really wanted to just learn more about it, since I may know someone with it. While researching about this topic, I learned a lot about the treatment for ADHD. It can literally change ones life. It can be so effective for the child and completely change their attitude towards everything.

Also, I found it really interesting how different a kid with ADHD is compared to a kid without. I did not think the differences would be that big. The child with ADHD didn't like much, had a harder time with school, and did not like school at such a young age, where the child without ADHD loved doing activities, thought school was quick and easy, and loved school. I didn't know how muhc it could effect someone's feelings so this was very interesting and helpful for me to learn as well.
