The beliefs of the holiday vary. The gates of heaven are opened at midnight on October 31st. The spirits of all the dead children are able to reunite with their families for 24 hours. On November 2nd, the spirits of adults are then able to come and take part in the festivities prepared for them. The happy spirits will provide them with protection, good luck, and wisdom to their families.

La historia del día de los muertos

This tradition traces as far back as three thousand years ago. This belief resulted during the rising and falling of many civilizations (the Olmecs, Mayans and Aztecs) where they only had one thing in common: belief of the afterlife. They had thought of celebrating death instead of fearing it, honoring the goddess Mictecacihuatl, Queen of the Underworld, who is now called La Calavera Catrina. They originally held the celebration for a month before the Spaniards conquered the Aztecs in 1521. They tried to make them adopt their Catholic beliefs and shortened the celebration to two-three days. It is now celebrated on October 31st-November 2nd. Now, the day of the dead is celebrated in all parts of the world including Central & Southern Mexico, and parts of the US. Symbols of this day include: marigolds, candles, skulls and skeletons, altars. Offerings such as food, crafts, gifts, candies, and sometimes alcohol and cigars for the adults.

Sugar Skulls

The sugar skulls have much more of a significant meaning than most think. These skulls represent and honor the departed soul. The name of the soul is often written on the forehead and is placed in the home or gravestone to honor the return of the spirit.

My Conclusion

I believe that people view the day of the dead as bad or evil because throughout time skulls and skeletons have represented death, which most humans are afraid of (although it is inevitable). The word death usually causes panic and fear, and throughout time has been used as a scare tactic for Halloween, or horror movies, or anything along those lines. I believe that most people don't try to see the bigger picture when it comes to celebrations like this, they don't see the actual meaning they just see the surface and form their own opinions without any actual knowledge on the subject.

I think that people who view the day of the dead as bad or evil might think it goes against their religion and think that it's wrong for people to celebrate the dead. Some Christians might think it's wrong because when people die they go to heaven or hell for eternal rest or torture and they don't come back for any reason. While the people who celebrate El Dia de los Muertos think that they come back for a couple of days to be with their family.

I feel like the only reason a person could view this holiday as bad or diabolic is due to lack of knowledge. They see the things done here and don't know the bigger picture. they don't know what each tradition represents and the meaning behind them. Society tends to judge very often prior to actually learning reasoning. Which in a lot of cases can showcase. Some just don't believe it's right due to their separate religions. The true reasonings I feel can vary. But as long as it brings joy and happiness to those who celebrate "The Day of The Dead" I don't see the harm and respect the traditions.
