Female Genital Mutilation: a Form of Abuse

female genital cutting and female circumcision, involves the cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. The practice is found in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. This practice can be directly related to domestic violence as these countries whom practice FGM are also the ones who have the highest percent of reported domestic violence. UNICEF estimated in 2016 that 200 million women living today in 30 countries—27 African countries, Indonesia, Iraqi Kurdistan and Yemen have undergone this procedure. Procedures occur between infancy and adolescence, and occasionally during adulthood. More than 3 million girls are at risk for FGM annually. There are many circumstances that influences the cultures reasoning for performing FGM. It may be a social norm, preparation of adulthood, ensures fidelity, maintaining modesty and more. There are now legal frameworks as well as ethical dilemmas that support FGM is wrong and thus, abusive.

Domestic violence is common worldwide, and is often under reported. This brief video displays the process of domestic violence. It shows that domestic violence can start off slow with little to no warning signs. As the relationship progressed the husband started to become increasingly violent and abusive. He also started to get more controlling, and took away her credit cards and cash. The husband started to beat her more frequently and blamed her for making him do such a thing in the first place. People who experience such a trauma are likely scared of their abuser and would probably would not report them in fear of getting hurt again.

More than 150 million girls under 18 have experienced forced intercourse or sexual violence, says research from the UN. The sad, ugly truth about this is many women believe their husbands are justified in beating them even for trivial incidents, and domestic abuse is widely viewed as strictly an issue to keep within the family. According to estimates from the UN, between 250,000 and 500,000 women were raped during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda (Region of Africa). Studies from Australia, Canada, Israel, South Africa, and the United States show between 40% and 70% of female murders were committed by someone who was considered an intimate partners. Likewise, a WHO study on domestic violence carried out in 10 countries found more than 75 % of women who had been physically or sexually abused since the age of 15 years had been abused by a partner. In addition, 48 population-based studies from around the world found that between 10%-69% of women reported having been physically assaulted by an intimate partner during their lifetime.(
