Objective: Students will analyze how the author draws on the theme of love from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

"Good afternoon class! Today, we will be talking about Westside Story." (2a/2d)

"Do you think the characters really love each other or is there an infatuation?"

What's the difference between a crush versus being in love?

5-minute clip followed by a 3-minute journal entry.

I get the idea that people didn't hear that, so we will have to act it out ourselves.

"Thank you Brandon, Emily, and Scott" (2a/2c)

Asked for students to share their journal entries.

A difference of opinion, that's always good.

"Who can read the first highlighted quote? We're reading this and tracking..."

Why does she use the metaphor "Love is like lightening?"

"Can we have a new reader please?"

How does each story deal with love?

Work in groups of 2 and underline quotes from the WEST-SIDE STORY PASSAGE"

"So, what did you all find?" (2a/2/c).

"How are we coming along? Find some evidence? Dope!" (2a)

Emerging Areas:
-Always check with technology before using it.
- Way to quickly implement a back-up plan so that the lessons doesn't lose momentum.
- Great way to involve students early in the lesson.
-Way to get multiple students involved in the lesson.
-Pacing. Understand your time and what you need to accomplish.
- Maybe a socratic seminar might have gone over better for the opening activity

Larger Font on Objective. Good reading Objective to students, but consider having a student read it. Good query of student's prior knowledge. Good prepared for tech failure with handout. Subtitles? as you move about the room, check in on students to see if they have understanding. Juxtaposing the two scenes, Good. Generated good student discussion. Nice. Going back to the objective. I wasn't sure what I was meant to do during the independent work. I think that we needed for you to model some of it first. How should my thesis statement look, etc. You could use a completely ridiculous thesis statement, like "Juliet's quick shift from caution to passion is clear evidence that she is an alien." Then back it up somehow.

Clear expectations of students set in the beginning. You repeated the objective in a couple of different ways, and you previewed the warmup for us.

I like that you didn't even pause the class at all to handle the tech issues. You kept things moving and there was no "dead air." You responded to each student comment and/or question smoothly and with humor.

I liked that you walked the class during journal responses. Note on the warmup question: Could it have been more open-ended?

You made sure all students participated. You called on Jaleesia when you were seeing the same volunteers.

You kept redirecting the instruction back to the comparison that you wanted the students to make. Effective focusing of the discussion. I liked how you focused the attention by pointing to different lines and asking the students to do the analysis.

Passing out the outline for the groupwork was helpful guidance for the groupwork to make sure it was working towards the end product.

Great engaging warmup question. Good job of remaining flexible as the technology failed to cooperate. You had a plan B already in place and you transitioned smoothly from one activity to the other. Great job of engaging class and calling on students to participate. I do agree that the font should be bigger for your warmup and objective. Group work didn't take long at all, you might want to add to it or have directions for those who finish early.

Having copies of the script was a great idea, as there were issues with technology! Also, the essay outline was very helpful.

Thoughts: I agree with Steven H. Having a larger font on the screen would have been great .
