Physical Theatre: The difference between normal theatre and physical theatre is that physical movement is used as storytelling instead of text in a play or music and lyrics in an opera. It can also incorporate other techniques such as mime, gesture and modern dance to create performance pieces. Physical theatre typically doesn't involve much speech as it is shown through movement instead.

This short trailer clip from Frantic Assembly shows the emotion and atmosphere this company creates through simple movement. It shows how no dialogue can still create a meaningful story and certain movements can perfectly portray the type of relationship characters have with one another. I believe their methods to be very powerful as the story they create through movement holds great emotion and deeper meaning, leaving the audience in awe and deep thought.

This is the first draft for my monologue where i'm speaking from the perspective of a young girl who had caught her partner cheating on her. As I gave my monologue more thought, I decided to change the plot and create a more moving piece about a daughter finding out her Dad had met another woman after her Mum had passed away. The re-draft of my monologue came to this:
"To be honest, none of it really bothered me until i saw it. None of it really seemed real until it was right there in front of me. Who even is she? Why is she here?"
I feel like this version of my short monologue has a deeper impact on the audience as it leaves them with more mystery and intrigue. This task helped me develop more of my creative side which I think could help me reach my full potential as an actress.

This unit is all about devising and creating a short scene of physical theatre, including work done individually and within a group. For the next few weeks we will be focused on physical theatre and coming up with a showpiece that involves dialogue and movement. We will individually write a short monologue which will later be incorporated with our movements which will be devised by separate groups. I believe that this project will really help us learn to trust ourselves and our peers as we work together performing stunts such as trust falls and counter balancing exercises.

When doing this unit, I might face multiple barriers as working as a group brings on many challenges which you must overcome, not only by yourself but as a group. When working with others, we may face issues of disagreements and lack of support which will have a negative impact on the rehearsal process leading to a possibly unsuccessful performance. To avoid this from happening, I must have a good level of understanding and maturity to help complete what needs to be done. I must have an open mind and be welcoming to experiment with new ideas and see what works and what doesn't. Another barrier I may face this unit could be distractions. We only have a short amount of time to devise a clean and impressive performance and in order to do this, I must keep my focus on my group and constantly put in the effort to help improve our piece. Showing up to rehearsals and making sure my part of the job is done is only half of what I must do to make this performance successful. I need make sure that my group members are motivated enough to fully involve themselves in the process of devising our piece and helping improve it in every way that they can.

(From start to 1:20)
This snippet from DV8's 'Cost of living' is a unique piece of theatre that really shines on the dance aspect of this style. We can see in the first few seconds the performer repeating the same movements before he breaks off into an improvised, free spirited state of dance. This could maybe be portraying him letting go of his worries as his facial features drastically change from lifeless and melancholic to over joyed and energised. This makes me feel as if there is a deeper meaning behind it that could be interpreted in many different ways. I quite like the style DV8 had put this in and I believe, if used in the right context, could be very fitting for a Berkoff style play.

This trailer for Double edge theatres 'Summer spectacles' gives us an insight on some of their performances and what they include in them. I find this very interesting because not only do they use physical movement for story-telling, they also use a range of shadow puppets and acrobatics as well as music and dance. I think that this physical theatre group goes above and beyond to break the barrier between acting and dance as they involve the best aspects of each practice.

I believe that after week 1 I had managed to maintain a good relationship with my group where we were able to listen to each other's ideas and make sure that everyone was involved in the task. I think that I could've improved my involvement in the physical movements as I don't think that I participated as much as I could've so next week that will be one of my main focuses.

My targets for this week were all achieved as I improved my involvement and focus and experimented many different movements with my group. My progress can be seen in the videos of my 'Week 2' journal as in the second clip you can see I am much more focused and the movements have changed to more seamless and and challenging ones. I also believe that my focus had improved by managing to stay in my role and achieved delivering all my lines.

The clip above shows me and my group performing our first run through of our movements whilst trying to involve a few lines from our separate monologues. As seen in the video, no one was fully focused and the movement did not flow as smoothly as we wanted it too. Some of the feedback we received from this was to try and add 'smooth transitions' to avoid the performance from looking stiff; another piece of feedback we got was to control the order of our lines and make it clear who says what and when.
The clip below is a video of my group on the same day after polishing our performance and listening to the previous feedback. We took our feedback into consideration and added more physical movement and controlled the order of speech to help improve our performance. I believe this worked well for our group as we had much more focus and control over our piece. I do think that after a few more rehearsals we can showcase a polished and impressive performance as long as we continue to focus and improve.

My final performance went somewhat well in my opinion as I managed to deliver clear lines and balanced movement. An example of this would be when we performed our movements in the first half, however, I do think that I could have improved my balance when lifting one of my peers as it was a bit unstable and could have gone wrong. Although there were times where we slipped up, we were able to make it go unnoticed by the audience and managed to maintain our focus and commitment to the project. With regards to my previous journal about week 2, where I stated that I should 'perform to my best ability without making any mistakes' I have now learnt that the challenge is not to perform flawlessly, but to have the ability to cope with the mistakes in a calm and professional manner to not alert the audience. I think that the staging of everything with the lights really helped tie it all together and look impressive and presentable. I believe that each group were clearly highlighted no matter where they stood on stage or when they began to perform. This style of theatre proved to be really moving as it allowed the audience to interpret things in their own way which keeps them engaged in the act. Overall, I am satisfied with my performance however, upon self reflection, I believe that it could have been improved, if as a group, we spent more time focusing on the transitional moments rather than perfecting the actual moves. To conclude, this project taught me a whole different side to performance theatre and allowed me to widen my range of skills.
