"Louisa puts on a green apron and a hat with a green ribbon. She goes outside to her garden, picks currants for her tea, and sits on her back steps to take off the stems. She then carefully gathers the stems into her apron and tosses them into the hen coop, making sure no stems have fallen out of place onto the grass outside of the coop. She takes her time doing each of these things. Once inside, Louisa - calmly and slowly - steeps her tea. When it is ready, she prepares herself to drink it with “as much grace as if she had been a veritable guest to her own self.”

Transitioning straight into another classic feminine cliche, Freeman goes into descriptive detail on Louisa's gardening, making sure to emphasize the matching clothing. Freeman also continues to point out Louisa's tidiness and cleanliness, showing her incessant need to take plenty of time so that no currant stems fall out of place. Following this, Louisa goes back inside and "calmly and slowly" sips her tea. Freeman also stresses that she drinks her tea with “as much grace as if she had been a veritable guest to her own self.” Throughout this entire situation in the story, Freeman portrays Louisa in an extremely feminine light, completing all of her tasks as timidly and peacefully as possible (Harris 4).

"A New England Nun" functions as a display of the 19th century beliefs and presumptions of what a woman's role should be. The novel continuously demonstrates several feminine practices that were common in the 19th century, and shows how difficult it was to attempt to break free of the gender norms during that time. The narrator is portrayed as a non-traditional 19th century woman, in the sense that she does not want to live her life based off of a marriage and a man. Freeman does an excellent job with this novel, using it to show the gender-fixated problems and ideals occurring constantly around her in her everyday life.
