A prominent figure in the Black Arts Movement was author James Baldwin whose works depicted his life as a black American during a time of radical change in American society. In his book Notes of a Native Son, Baldwin illustrates the communal and generational trauma experienced by the African American community, both systematically and personally. While he goes into detail about the hardships faced, Baldwin also makes sure to remind the world that black is beautiful and powerful when describing his father and refers to his father as handsome and beautiful directly, a dominating theme within the Black Arts Movement.
