Athenians didn't treat their people fairly. Women had absolutely no rights what so ever. The reading says, "girls did not attend school." It also says "they were not permitted to hold government office, compete in sportsm or take part in public events." Athens wasn't such a direct democracy after all. Only the males who had free parents could be involved in the government. Girls had to stay home while slaves had no rights even after they freed themselves.

Athens may have had a high emphasis on physical fitness, but this was only for men. In Sparta envy one was trained to become physically fit. This made the mothers strong so that they could have children. It made the fathers strong so they could fight for Sparta.

The same could be said about the Spartans too, however. The number of slaves they kept outnumbered their own citizens. Only 10% of their population were citizens at that, making them much less fair then its Athenian counterpart.

The same could not be said for Sparta. Women were given a purpose in society. They could engage in business activities as adults. Although Sparta did have a lot of slaves, that is what made them a strong force. Sparta was a very strong force. After all Sparta did smash Athens in war. Sparta had an emphasis military which allowed them to win the war.

Sparta won over Athens, yes, however the war was very draining to Greece as a whole, so kudos to them I suppose? Focusing ones entire life around fighting seems drab and awful, while Athens' focus on the artsier side of things created a much more rewarding and engaging environment.
