In the front of the school, the P.E. coaches establish a school bulletin board that plays on a theme for the month. This past month, I asked if I could help them set up the bulletin board. It had to do with raising money for the school. It said, "Help BRCVPA get over the rainbow." There was a gold pot at the bottom where students/parents could add coins after reaching a certain amount of fundraising money.

After creating a newsletter I realized the importance of consistent communication with the parents. Keeping them in the loop with whats going on in each subject area helps them to be proactive in their child's learning. Also, having this information readily available prevents a bombardment of questions from the parents. Not only do we send the newsletter home but we also upload them on our class communication app so the parents can access it anytime. I have learned that sending a newsletter about the upcoming week provides opportunities for the parents to get involved in lessons and plan their week and their child's week accordingly.

Recently in the classroom we have been struggling with children sitting quietly and paying attention during lessons on the carpet. Therefore, I implemented a new system called the "Best Row of Learners". For each lesson on the carpet, the children with the best row (quietest, raising hand, sitting like a learner, etc.) get a tally mark on the board for that lesson. The winning row at the end of the day gets an extra Dojo point.

The "Best Row of Learners" reward system has been very effective during teaching. The children are very aware of their bodies and focus on paying attention and raising their hands which aids in the efficiency of the lesson. When the children slip up, I often times point to the chart on the board and they immediately fix themselves. This has changed the way the children sit on the carpet and increases their dojo scores at the end of the day which is great incentive for them. A lot of our classroom management focuses on being self-aware and being proactive in learning. This system has allowed students to gain more responsibility in their learning.

Each morning for Morning Meeting we focus on the 7 Habits. On this specific morning, we were focusing on habit #6 "Synergize". This habit helps the children to recognize that its much easier to work with others when they learn to appreciate each others differences. We talked about how when we optimize individual strengths, everyone benefits. During this lesson the children discovered how we can use our strengths to make contributions, how others contribute using their strengths, and why utilizing everyone's strengths makes the class more effective. For this lesson the students were required to write down their strengths on a strip of paper and put it in the pocket chart for us to focus on. We went over each strength and how it might help us synergize.

I also learned the importance of positive
reinforcement. The amount of parent involvement directly affects the child's behavior and it is important to keep/encourage them to be involved. Another important part of classroom management is keeping an environment that the children enjoy. If they are engaged and interested in learning, they are more likely to have a better attitude and better behavior. Combining respect with a positive environment will create the best opportunity to have successful classroom management.

During our lesson, we find that often times the children need help quieting down and focusing their attention. Therefore, we created transitions in our classroom that help the children to understand their expectations or to get their attention. When we are trying to get the children's attention we say, "class, class" and the children respond with "yes, yes". To mix it up and keep the transition effective, we change up the tune and the children must mock the tune in their response. The next transition we use is counting on during math transitions. The children move from whole group to small group back to whole group and then to back up by counting on. This can include 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, etc., depending on where the children are developmentally. Another transition we use during our teaching is for agreements in teaching. When the students agree with something I said or another classmate says and are asked, "Do you agree?" they respond with "whoop". However, if they disagree they reply with, "Whomp." This is a quick way to make sure everyone is on the same page.

I feel that gaining this respect helps the children to give respect more freely in return and decreases behavior problems. One way I like to "be a part of the team" or gain their respect is to show the students that I care about them and the things going on in their life. Therefore, before every lesson I begin with a conversation. If its in the morning, our conversations last longer and the children share more, however, after recess or ancillary the children explain what they did and how they are feeling. I believe this small step helps the children to know they are cared about and that the classroom is a safe place for them to share.

The math game I created was used for elapsed time. The students were required to answer the question on the worksheet and then fix their own analog clock to match their answer. Once they were done, they tagged their partner and their partner checked their answer and began their turn.

After math whole group, the students go to their desk for independent work and Mrs. Schexnayder and I call small groups. After the time test, 4 students were still struggling to tell time and write time on an analog clock. Therefore, when they game for small group I created a time game that would make it a little more fun for them since it was a repeated skill. They seemed to really like it and it was effective in their post intervention scores.

After implementing the lesson, ALL of the students' scores went up. They improved in the skills we were working on but have not yet reached advanced or mastery. In order to increase the chances of this happening we offered these students some implications. We included some time problems in their homework to go home as extra practice and we also added a time center to the math centers so they can be reviewing regularly.
