My mission trip to Routan Honduras.

I think this was important to add into the presentation because it shows the good and bad things that are there. For example it’s absolutely beautiful no matter where you are even if you’re in the villages with a lot of poverty.

Question: Why was poverty such a problem in Honduras?

Answer: Climate change, inconsistent economic growth, growing levels of inequality and poverty, violence, displacement and limited access to basic social services

Question: What are the main challenges facing the healthcare system in Honduras?

Answer: Of the population of over 10 million people, its estimated that 18% do not have access to any healthcare services. If you use the public hospital in Honduras and you need surgery or go through an operation and you don’t have enough, you sit in the hospital until you finally have enough for it. Same as if you need food, family members have to bring it for you otherwise you don’t get to eat.

I chose this video because it shows the village and kind of what it’s like there. When I went to Honduras for my mission trip we went to several different villages and they all were a little different but so much alike. In the first video there’s some other villages that look exactly like this and kids biking around and playing.

Conflicts ~ Poverty

Honduras is a poor income country where over 60% of people live in poverty. Some of the reasons for the extreme rate of poverty are climate change, uneven economic growth, inequality, violence, and limited services increase food insecurity and malnutrition. With undernutrition and obesity, costs Honduras about $618 million yearly from 2018 to 2081. Even though it’s still a work in progress and getting better and better each day, 19% of children under 5 still face developmental issues due to malnutrition. Micronutrient deficiencies and rising obesity rates among women are also concerns. In 2023, Honduras struggled with El Niño, severe drought, and Tropical Storm Pilar, affecting crops causing them to have to start all over again.

This is what the living conditions in the villages are like, they have to use boards to get across the “lawn” just so they could get to the front door. The ground is full of swamp water and full of trash.

Gas station

The crime rate is so high in Honduras that they have guards everywhere at all times so nothing bad happens. This was at a gas station where we had lunch after visiting a village.

Garbage dump

This is the dump, this is where all the trash goes and it ends up on top of this hill. Where the grass is used to be all trash but each year it’s starting to look better and better. At the dump they take thousands of cans and lay them on the road so when cars run them over they can pick them up and sell them so they can afford dinner.

Groceries and Hygiene

At every village we would pass out grocery bags full of food and pass out bags full of hygiene products and medicine. In the villages they LOVE vapor rub because they use that the most so we made sure to give a lot of those out. We gave out kids and adult vitamins and tooth brushes and toothpaste.
