At a young age, he and his family moved to Vermont , he was raised there as well. he became a conductor, and his employers sent him to Titusville so that he could assess the viability of the oil industry. Along his way, he picked up the name "colonel Drake," and from then on that's what people called him. He began drilling in 1858, and was the driller of the first productive oil well in the United States.
